Any one else had a Christmas disaster!

Brought a lovely stuffed pork joint for Christmas dinner. Weighed it, worked out cooking times. All going great! Apart from the fact it weighed 1.5kg and I worked out the timings for a 2.5kg joint!

It was black, eyes were watering from all the smoke. It was ruined! Once dh aired the kitchen and we could all breath again we could have a laugh about it. The kids even used it as a excuse for needing two puddings as they would be so hungry lol

Can't go into detail as too outing but my mum made a major mistake with the dinner that could put my children's health at risk (they are allergy sufferers) so we had a HUGE row and my children just had veggies for their lunch.
I feel guilty for shouting, I didn't handle the situation maturely. My dad is now seething that I behaved badly and I've been in tears on and off all afternoon.
Absolutely not visiting anyone next year. Just want to be with DH and my children

Let the cream turn in the sherry trifle.

All vets will have an emergency line - if you ring the surgery you should get through to the on-call receptionist.
The pet in question is a rat so needs an exotic vet. We’ve tried every emergency vet within a 4 hour drive (not in the UK) and none can see rats. Have to wait for our regular to reopen but i don’t know that she’ll make it/

YukoandHiro · 25/12/2021 18:52

@Lacedwithgrace An eventful day! Congratulations though - that's lovely Christmas news

Very sorry Flowers

delilahbucket · 25/12/2021 18:56

Couldn't get a cauliflower from the supermarket, thought we had some in the freezer. Turned out it was a bag of mash 🤦. Ended up with broccoli cheese which just wasn't the same.
Are two hours later than planned as turkey didn't cook like it should. I cook it the same every year, but some some reason this year it must have gone in colder and it wasn't getting hot in the middle.
Oh well, we've got our food babies now. Can't even contemplate dessert.

olivehater · 25/12/2021 18:56

Had to carry my 3 year having a huge melt down out of a small busy restaurant under my arm, with the whole restaurant watching.

MrsToothyBitch · 25/12/2021 18:58

It's been a lovely day here except I can feel that the cold I woke up to yesterday is now settling into my sinuses!

PinkandGreenWaterBottle · 25/12/2021 19:01

My cousin turned up for dinner an hour and a half late, my autistic brother refused to eat until cousin was there and when cousin was finally arrived my GPs where asleep so missed dinner Sad

They ate when they woke up but still felt sad not having them at the table for lunch

mumda · 25/12/2021 19:01

@MrsClatterbuck

Not a disaster really but I forgot to take the pigs in blankets out of the freezer last night. Tbh I wouldn't have had any room for them. Near disaster just half an hour after dinner our electric went off. Just our estate. Neighbour had her meat cooked but not the veg and family were due to arrive. Back on now so hopefully they are now tucking into their Christmas dinner and never has a cup of tea tasted so good.
Ahhhhh. Pigs in blankets still on freezer.

No one noticed.

Blueby1 · 25/12/2021 19:01

Big hugs, rats are the loveliest animals. I hope they pull through.

OmgIThinkILikeYou · 25/12/2021 19:02

I made a buffet for 10 people but everyone was too stuffed from lunch to eat it. I don't eat alot as I have basically no stomach, dp is vegetarian and ds is a baby so basically just going to go to waste. I am feeling quite guilty about it tbh.

TameDucksAtChatsworth · 25/12/2021 19:04

@ShiteChristmas

A non specialist vet may be able to offer pain relief.

EthelMerman · 25/12/2021 19:06

Not at all cheerful this one, could be triggering for some.

Having had a trip out yesterday, lovely time with DP, and two teenage DSs, on the way home we saw a car leave the motorway. We stopped, with others to help, woman got out ok, but not her husband. Aside from the realisation that we’re damned lucky and how quickly things can change, we’re a little quiet & blue today.

Every so often find myself thinking of how in only a few moments the woman’s life was just upended and feeling so sad for her.

Need to pull myself together, start on dinner and hope the roast potatoes turn out ok.

DoloresOnTheDottedLine · 25/12/2021 19:06

DP knocked the pigs in blankets onto the floor, splashing hot oil everywhere and sending hot pigs flying in all directions. We managed to get them before the dog did, rinsed then under the tap and then fried them for a few minutes - no one has died yet!

inheritancetrack · 25/12/2021 19:06

I'm not a good cook but decided to make a large mince pie in a 6" metal pie dish. I bought the pastry because I can't make it.
Bought the mincemeat as ...ditto...

The pastry i bought was flaky pastry so the pastry rose up in the cooking and the mincemeat migrated under it and burned solid to the pan. We spent 30 minutes using knives as chisels to get it out of the pan before giving up.

Stillfunny · 25/12/2021 19:08

Came home from church to find elderly aunt had fallen out the patio door . Had to call ambulance. Dislocated elbow and hip fracture. Currently in her room . She is 97 and partially blind so worst patient to manage well .

scully29 · 25/12/2021 19:12

Shite, you really don't need an exotics vet for a rat I promise, rats are normal patients in practice, all vets will have an out of hours team at work today and christmas day is often very quiet for them as everyone thinks they are closed and then boxing day is crazy busy. Ive worked christmas lots, one year we had someone whose dog broke their leg on christmas day and they assumed wed be closed and left them till boxing day before they rang which is horrendous! You can ring them anytime.

crackofdoom · 25/12/2021 19:14

inheritancetrack yes, boiling mincemeat is one of the most adhesive substances known to man. If Insulate Britain had used it to stick themselves to the M25 they’d still be there 😆

Our downstairs toilet hasn’t been flushing properly for days, and I’ve just gone in to find it properly blocked. With 2 of DS2’s amazing non- flushing turds bobbing around in the bowl 😱. My response has been to run around wailing, bolt the door and declare it a no- go zone. I’ll deal with it tomorrow 😬

Staryflight445 · 25/12/2021 19:15

Overwhelmed children, constant screaming hysterical tantrums all day.
My 6 year old wanted to open everything and play with it all but had to say no for the supervised items today due to utter chaos everywhere, she had a tantrum and launched said toy to the floor and it smashed into bits.

I’m not doing this next year. They can’t handle the build up/ toy excitement and it’s been absolutely miserable all day.
I wouldn’t mind but we didn’t even buy that much this year to try stop it from happening.

thehillswerebright · 25/12/2021 19:18

We have dinner in the livingroom, my husbands chair leg snapped and he fell back smashing the tv. The tv that was borrowed from my parents because ours is away getting the back light thing fixed (only a week out of warranty 😡) so that's me £350 down on the day already 🤦‍♀️

crackofdoom · 25/12/2021 19:19

Also the DC managed to set fire to a packet of mixed fruit and nuts with a candle while I was out of the room, but luckily put it out before I returned 🙄
