Any one else had a Christmas disaster!

Brought a lovely stuffed pork joint for Christmas dinner. Weighed it, worked out cooking times. All going great! Apart from the fact it weighed 1.5kg and I worked out the timings for a 2.5kg joint!

It was black, eyes were watering from all the smoke. It was ruined! Once dh aired the kitchen and we could all breath again we could have a laugh about it. The kids even used it as a excuse for needing two puddings as they would be so hungry lol

jovialnickname that’s terrible, do you think you’ll feel OK reporting it to the police? Someone like this really shouldn’t be running a pub Thanks

Suzanne999 · 25/12/2021 22:10
@ShiteChristmas call your vet’s phone number, there will be a recorded message for ooo cover. It might also be in their website.

Mine is also dog related but less catastrophic. 2 bouts of diarrhoea in the sitting room today. He’s now in the kitchen for the night but pacing and bashing into everything.
@SockFluffInTheBath Your dog hasn’t got hold of some chocolate or dried fruit?

JustLyra · 25/12/2021 22:12

Minor disaster with one jug of gravy here.
Normally I’m barefoot or in slippers, but it was wet so I kept my boots on as I was in and out to the bin.

After filling the jugs of gravy I moved them to the other counter for them to go on the table. Managed to topple one of them over and it spilled all down and I was stood in a puddle of boiling hot gravy. If I’d been barefoot or in slippers it would have been agony.

One of our family accidentally forgot one bag of presents. Thankfully was for adults so no upset children, but I think their 22yo will dine out on it (humorously) for a while!

ShiteChristmas · 25/12/2021 22:16

any vets will see smallies. Even to put to sleep (sorry),. Hope your little one is comfortable in the meantime
Then why are so many of them lying to me?

TwoDogs9 · 25/12/2021 22:17

@olivehater

Had to carry my 3 year having a huge melt down out of a small busy restaurant under my arm, with the whole restaurant watching.
I feel your pain, I had to carry my nearly 5yr old DS out of my in-laws house after an afternoon of sheer hell with him. Missed out on the puddings after the most stressful Christmas Day ever. Staying at home next year for a quiet one!!!
Xmasfairy86 · 25/12/2021 22:22

The only veg my DD10 requested was cauli and broccoli cheese. Been banging on about it for actual weeks. Realised at 6am that I did not purchase cauliflower nor broccoli 🤦🏽‍♀️

Gretaburley · 25/12/2021 22:23

Dropped the gravy jug as I went to pick it up. It landed on the edge of the sink and smashed , gravy all over the floor, shards of pottery too and dog trying to lick up the gravy.
Dh and guests oblivious in the other room!

Tested positive for covid 🦠🦠

ShiteChristmas · 25/12/2021 22:29

@fluffedup

We’ve gone to the one emergency vet that is willing to examine her, but unfortunately they don’t have any of the meds she needs in stock (I tried proving that brand names too - no success but thank you for trying).

An online vet suggested steroids to get her through until our regular vet opens. Hopefully they’re willing to administer that but they keep making clear there’s not much they can do to help as they’re unqualified when it comes to exotics.

MRSAHILL · 25/12/2021 22:32

@ShiteChristmas I'm so very sorry for what you are going through with your pet. I am in the same situation. My dog has a tumour in his throat and a brain tumour. They were diagnosed in June and he was put on a chemo drug called Masivet. Within a few days we had a fantastic response and I never thought he'd be here for Christmas, but he is and he's had a fantastic time. He did experience some side effect sickness and so was put on a drug called phenobard which has stopped this completely. Not all vets use masivet, it's very strong and has to be handled carefully and its also very expensive. None of these treatments may be suitable for your poor pet but I just wanted to let you know there are things that can be done. My heart goes out to you and your pet as I know exactly what you are going through x

Meatshake · 25/12/2021 22:32

Went to check on the turkey after 1.5 hours to find it uncooked and stone cold as the oven had turned itself off.

Words were had and wine was drunk.

SockFluffInTheBath · 25/12/2021 22:34

@Suzanne999 no, I’m really careful with stuff he can’t have as he’s old and got to the food snatching stage. I think it’s down to some dodgy halloumi sticks yesterday (DD and DH have bad tummies too but not doing it on the rug thankfully Xmas Hmm ).

Florabritannica · 25/12/2021 22:35

Dogs are the pigs in blankets

MRSAHILL · 25/12/2021 22:35

@ShiteChristmas So sorry, I didn't read the full thread and have just seen your pet is not a dog. I really hope your little pet can get the help it needs to feel well soon x

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 25/12/2021 22:36

Couldn't have my mum and dad over for the second year for Xmas . It was all planned all had negative covid tests then my dh who was at work last night got a txt to say the guy who he was working with had tested positive. My mum is a transplant recipient and we cannot risk it. I work in the nhs and havnt been able to see her due to working with covid patients previously and this just broke me today

Bunnyfuller · 25/12/2021 22:37

Miserable, sulky teenagers. DH in usual making sure he has a good Christmas mode, silent dinner due to me kicking off about the silent and selfish. Utterly shit day.

ShiteChristmas · 25/12/2021 22:38

@MRSAHILL

Thank you. On any other day of the year I think there would be things that could be done to extend her life, unfortunately (despite other commenters consistently insisting otherwise), almost no emergency vets are willing to see her (and the one who is doesn’t have any of the recommended treatment options available).

She’s with that clinic currently and we’re waiting on a call from the vet, crossing our fingers that they’ll be willing/able to do something, but not exactly feeling optimistic given their lack of expertise and primary medications...

kokokokokokokokoko · 25/12/2021 22:46

punchups at xmas dinner here op, mh team out, holding relatives off, tears etc etc. yawn, so over xmas

thetinsoldier · 25/12/2021 22:47

@iklboodolphrednosedpaindear

Dad died on Thursday. We don't really feel very Christmassy.
I'm so very sorry. Sending you big hugs.
patchysmum · 25/12/2021 22:50

SockFluffInTheBath not read the thread yet but has your dog had its vaccinations ? my mums dog had parvo virus and had the same symptons kept bashing into things and diarrhoea

hohohooooo · 25/12/2021 22:52

Many years ago when there were 13 of us staying for Xmas, the dishwasher broke on Xmas Eve. I did a LOT of washing up.

hivemindneeded · 25/12/2021 22:55

Dinner was going well, and all I had to do was cook the sprouts and steam some peas on top of them. I noticed the peas weren't cooking so checked on the sprouts underneath. I'd forgotten to put water in the pan. Sprouts all charred. But I cut off the charred bits and cooked them then tossed them in lemon butter and they were fine, so not much of a disaster..

Shodan · 25/12/2021 22:55

Not as bad as some of these, but ds1 and I had a massive row. He's depressed, I don't understand, nothing I say or do is helpful to him, I don't understand just how much it took for him to show up last night and sit there in silence eating my food, sleep in the newly-decorated spare room, then spend a few hours at my sister's eating her food...

Paying for private therapy, coming when called even when I was in agony with a painful back, dropping everything when he was 'in need', trying to empathise because I've suffered from depression in the past-Not Good Enough, it seems.

Not allowed to draw my own line in the sand, or ask for basic courtesy... I've had enough. He's flounced off to see his girlfriend/maybe not girlfriend/love of his life/whatever...

Tired and fed up tonight.

BiddyPop · 25/12/2021 22:57

@Floundery

Autistic DS refused all food except Pringles with gravy for dinner. Then threw the gravy at the wall and twatted DH. He’s been up since 2am, which won’t have helped.

I’m reading the LA’s local offer for boarding schools with DH.

I’ve had better Christmases.

We had a similar Christmas with dd last year (ASD/adhd), this year she (after realising we were serious about referral for apparent suicide threats) has suddenly become communicative and (somewhat) helpful. So there is some hope.

A non specialist vet may be able to offer pain relief.
Or put to sleep if really suffering.

Having pets can be heartbreaking.
