Do you find takeaways gross?

Evening

Do you find takeaways gross, and avoid them at all costs?
I generally don't order takeout, only from time to time. Maybe it's just me, but sometimes I start eating them, and I honestly can just not finish it?! And feel kinda gross after or repulsed by the food tbh.

I generally try to go for lighter, healthier takeaways, so non-greasy foods, maybe Wagamama's but I was recently put off this too. Another time I had a Nando's wrap and coleslaw without chips and that was fine.

Sometimes I don't want to cook, and feel I'll want a takeout but then when I do, it just doesn't taste right. Maybe my body isn't taking to it. I really don't know how people order takeaway every few days without feeling sick.

Apart from buying alternatives for days I don't want to cook, eg oven food or dinners that can be made really quickly . Is there anything else you suggest for when I feel I may want one? It often just feels like a waste of money after and I then feel I'd have been better off cooking.

Do those here who actively avoid takeaways always have a homemade meal ready or what do you do?

I think that’s weird. Must save you a fortune.

A takeaway is still a luxury in my head ( although we eat out quite a lot). I love familiar tastes that I find impossible to recreate in my kitchen.

coconuthead · 19/12/2021 15:48

We have some lovely places near us including a family owned Turkish restaurant that does takeaway, Greek and a fabulous Indian so yabu for saying ALL takeaways are crap. Yes they are mostly unhealthy and calorific but everything in moderation!

greatape · 19/12/2021 15:56

I used to love a takeaway. We lived in London and had great choice - when I had very small babies we lived on Turkish delivery.

I now live semi rurally and am over 45. This last bit seems to have impacted my ability to cope with MSG so whilst we have Papa Johns or something from the village Chinese/chip shop a few times a year i invariably sleep poorly and feel sick the next day.

During lockdown we got takeaway from the local lovely Italian but it wasn't great for some reason.

We have one very nice Indian which doesn't deliver and one ok one which does. We can get to a Nando's to pick up which dh and Dd2 like.

Normally then it's just something from the supermarket. There is a stall which just opened up on our high st where the lady makes home made Thai and Indian dishes plus some other bits - I got dd a jerk chicken the other day that she really enjoyed but she's very very popular with limited choice so I'll have to plan better than I'm usually inclined to.

Mostly yes.

Gross is too strong a word but they are always very disappointing. A couple of mouthfuls and I've generally had enough.

If I can't be bothered to cook we are more inclined to homemade egg and chips than takeaways here.

DukeofEarlGrey · 19/12/2021 16:24

I know what you mean OP. I order takeaways sometimes and usually something 'healthy' like sushi but never feel good after eating it and it's definitely not the same as restaurant food. My (unfounded) theory is that it has more preservatives or things like MSG in it that don't sit well in my system.

For quick and easy but healthy food I would suggest batch cooking and stocking your freezer - I keep a load of homemade 'ready meals' that way and eat them with either frozen veg of bagged salad. Takes 5 mins to prepare.

FrankGrillosWrist · 19/12/2021 16:26

Absolutely! If people class this as a treat they probably live off micro meals.

BritWifeInUSA · 19/12/2021 16:35

We rarely have them. I enjoy cooking , make everything from scratch including bread, pasta, sauces, etc and we live over 25 miles from the nearest takeaway so it’s not practical. I batch cook at the weekend and freeze portions so that we always have something we can just heat up if I get held up at work or something comes up and I don’t have time to cook a proper meal.

On s road trip a few months ago we stayed at an Airbnb where the kitchen facilities were not as described so I couldn’t really cook anything. We found a Chinese takeaway place nearby and it was delicious. We had two dogs with us and they even did a dog meal of chicken and rice and some vegetables with no sauce (our dogs are only fed fresh food, no canned or dried food - I cook for them too).
If I could find other places as good as that was, I’d eat takeaways more often. But they are usually mediocre.

Elphame · 19/12/2021 16:44

@BoudecaBains

Deliveroo will bring scran from just about every restaurant with in a 5/7 mile radius. Is that a take-a-way ?.
If it covers your area maybe! It doesn't around here and I'm only 10 miles from the centre of Bristol

It's just Indian or Chinese around here or one of the rather poor chippies.

Changechangychange · 19/12/2021 16:49

Also I don't get why people buy takeaway pizza. If you buy a fresh pizza from the supermarket it is just as good, or maybe even better, and overall take less time to produce

A supermarket pizza tastes nothing like a decent sourdough pizza cooked in a pizza oven.

Some of you are just buying really cheap and nasty takeaways, by the sounds of it.

OldaRailer · 19/12/2021 16:54

Or not buying them actually..

OldaRailer · 19/12/2021 16:55

Not everywhere in the UK is like your neighbourhood.
Why is this a surprise to any adult.😂

I’m not the one saying all takeaways, everywhere in the world, regardless of price point and cuisine, are greasy and disgusting and anyone eating them should feel ashamed of themselves.
sparklemagicsnow · 19/12/2021 18:11

Ooh I love a decent takeaway. We probably only have them 5/6 times a year so they're a treat. We always have one New Years Eve and sometimes on birthdays etc.

Greasy kebab or burger or KFC type place? No thanks. Not really bothered about pizza either can take it or leave it. But a good Chinese, Indian or Thai takeaway can be a thing of beauty! Yum. I don't feel bloated or sick afterwards, maybe the acidity of the fine Aldi wine I drink with them cuts through the grease? Grin

If I can't be arsed to cook, I make cereal or toast for me but I have children to cook for and I don't like to feed them crap too often so generally I cook whether I feel like it or not!

Grapewrath · 19/12/2021 18:39

I like a curry from a certain place and never find it gross however I’m funny as in id never eat fried breakfasts or from a greasy spoon type place cus they give me the major Ick

Porcupineintherough · 19/12/2021 18:42

Weve just started having the occasional take away due to teenage demand. Honestly, with the exception of 1 or two, I've found them hugely disappointing, salty and greasy. Would much rather go out for a meal.

HibiscusIsland · 19/12/2021 19:47

We normally get a takeaway every month or 2, but in the first lockdown we had one every week as there wasn't much other enjoyment to be had other than walks, tv and food!

JurgensCakeBabyJesus · 19/12/2021 19:56

You definitely just need a massive salad, it's even better if you've had a roast chicken because there will be masses of left overs to have with it.

OhdearOhdearOhdearIndeed · 19/12/2021 22:53

I find most takeaways disappointing and I'm an ok cook, but I'm not cooking gourmet food every evening, so conclude they must be really bad! It's really rare you find a good one. I do have one occasionally when I really can't be arsed to cook, but I would prefer to stick something like nuggets/fish in the oven than spend 4x the cost of that on a takeaway that is equally shit.

Things like KFC and McDonalds look ok in the adverts but they really don't agree with me and I feel rough after, so don't eat many of them either. I'd rather have a skanky cheeseburger from a kebab house.

CulturePigeon · 10/05/2022 12:43

Yes - I agree but I hadn't thought about it until the OP asked the question. As pps have said, some types of food fare better than others as takeaways (the more greasy to start with, the less appetising as a takeaway, I think). I try to cook my own food (I'm a plain and simple cook, easily satisfied...) or if I can't be bothered, we'll have a nice convenience meal from a supermarket or happily enjoy eggs in some form, or Welsh rarebit with salad...or even a salad...rather than a takeaway.

More than the 'gross' aspect of them, I just don't know how people afford them regularly. We might get a takeaway 3 times a year but some people pay out for 3 a week, from what I read on here.

housemaus · 10/05/2022 13:19

We have amazing takeaways near here: our favourites are a Greek place where we tend to get stuffed vine leaves and Greek meatballs, an Asian fusion place that does freshly made veggie noodles in broth, and a Caribbean place that does amazing curried goat.

None of those are gross or heavy. If you're buying chain restaurant food or grotty late-night burger places then yeah, it's probably a bit greasy and not nice, but there are plenty of nice takeaways too... the common denoniminator in all our favourites are that they're family run so my recommendation is find somewhere that has a little old man/woman in the back cooking and the food is always 10/10 haha :)

Yes and if you aren't utterly STUFFED from that salad, you could always treat yourself to one square of good quality dark chocolate.

Jedsnewstar · 10/05/2022 13:37

I think takeaways are a lot different now. It used to be Indian, Chinese or chippy/kebab, basically fat and grease. Now with the delivery companies lots of restaurants do take out and lots of healthy options.

Squillerman · 10/05/2022 13:56

It depends what you order I suppose. If you live in a big city there’s plenty of healthier take away options, not so much in a small town or village. Our options are literally the classic pizza, Chinese, curry or fish and chips. All greasy as fuck and I agree, it is quite sickening. I always find it overpriced and just feel a bit ripped off by it too so we don’t order them regularly at all.

Like I say though, if you live in a city you could try something lighter like a vegan take out or sushi. I used to live in Leeds and regularly ordered lovely light food from a vegan place.

Squillerman · 10/05/2022 13:58

For me it’s the prep rather than actual cooking I can’t be arsed with most of the time so we get hello fresh for 3 out of the 7 meals. Saves me a lot of hassle.
