Do you find takeaways gross?

Evening

Do you find takeaways gross, and avoid them at all costs?
I generally don't order takeout, only from time to time. Maybe it's just me, but sometimes I start eating them, and I honestly can just not finish it?! And feel kinda gross after or repulsed by the food tbh.

I generally try to go for lighter, healthier takeaways, so non-greasy foods, maybe Wagamama's but I was recently put off this too. Another time I had a Nando's wrap and coleslaw without chips and that was fine.

Sometimes I don't want to cook, and feel I'll want a takeout but then when I do, it just doesn't taste right. Maybe my body isn't taking to it. I really don't know how people order takeaway every few days without feeling sick.

Apart from buying alternatives for days I don't want to cook, eg oven food or dinners that can be made really quickly . Is there anything else you suggest for when I feel I may want one? It often just feels like a waste of money after and I then feel I'd have been better off cooking.

Do those here who actively avoid takeaways always have a homemade meal ready or what do you do?

I'm not sure what you are asking, fucking obviously if you don't like takeaways then don't buy them, doesn't seem like rocket science.

BoredZelda · 18/12/2021 22:17

Yes, yes, well done for being so healthy.

Blossom64265 · 18/12/2021 22:18

It just depends on what you order.

There is a place near me that does delicious quinoa or rice bowls. Plenty of fresh vegetables and lean meat with light sauces. I can get more variety ordering from them than I can making it myself at home plus I love the ease.

TractorAndHeadphones · 18/12/2021 22:19

Yes - when I lived in an where takeaways are limited to greasy fried or greasy Asian/Italian. I made my own carbs (rice/pasta/potatoes) and added meat from the takeaway, with salad wasn't too bad.
Where I live now has better variety and some are great!

Justcashnosweets · 18/12/2021 22:21

I like takeaways but they don't like me! I almost always feel bloated and a bit sick afterwards.

RobinPenguins · 18/12/2021 22:22

How can all takeaways be rank? Greasy deep pan pizza from a kebab shop is totally different from thin, crispy stonebaked pizza. Rice and curry sauce is totally different from sushi. Nothing magical happens in the process of putting restaurant food in a box to make it “greasy and disgusting”. If something is rank to start with it’ll be rank as a takeaway. Unless you find all food cooked from anywhere apart from your own home disgusting then I don’t really get it.

I like a Chinese when tired on a Saturday night. Like chicken sweet and sour Hong Kong style from our local one. But the other week I opened it and was staring at chicken nuggets with a splash of sauce which hadn't covered the food, it was bloody awful. That's put me off and I'm so fed up.

thenightsky · 18/12/2021 22:27

The only takeaway we have is Indian, because we can't cook that as well as the shop do.

We have it on Boxing Day and maybe twice over the rest of the year (birthday treats). Never had a bad one yet.

Its a pain though, as its an hour round trip to pick it up.

Youdoyoutoday · 18/12/2021 22:32

God no! We've found 2 fantastic takeaways for Thai and Chinese and they are awesome. The McDonald's my ds insists on ordering are completely shit though, lukewarm, soggy chips over lockdown have converted me to Burger King!

If I was you, I'd cook more of a meal to freeze some so you have food for the days you don't want to cook.

icedcoffees · 18/12/2021 22:35

I love all the responses that are basically like; "Ooh heavens no I couldn't eat a takeaway - it's all flavourless slop and even thinking of the grease makes me nauseous" Wink

If you don't like takeaway don't eat it, but no need to come and act like you're superior because of it Grin

Pyracanth · 18/12/2021 22:36

I have ordered a handful of takeaways in the last 2 years, only as a treat to my DC’s. I really detest getting them for the same reasons as the op, but also because by the time they arrive they’re usually quite cold. I feel they’re more of a punishment than a treat!

Restaurant food is generally more oily than their homemade versions because oil makes food richer. Humans naturally like oily and fatty foods. My homemade curries use no more than a couple of teaspoons of oil for a dish with at least 6 servings. This is only for toasting the spices and the oil isn't visible at all. I have yet to find a takeaway where there aren't large blobs visible. or even a separate layer forming after a day of storage. Same for Chinese takeaways - to make my food taste the same I just add more oil!

Your DH need to drive faster. Also, put the plates in the oven to warm whilst he's fetching it.

RobinPenguins · 18/12/2021 22:57

Ok, but curry and Chinese aren’t the only takeaways…

JanisMoplin · 18/12/2021 23:01

I think takeways are very poor value for money in the UK. I still order them because I hate cooking. But everytime I do, I think wistfully of how I could have a far better meal for a third of the money in other countries.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 18/12/2021 23:02

If I want something a bit healthier I'll have something like a vegetable side from an indian takeaway or a side of dal with no naan, I don't generally feel bloated or greasy or thirsty after that. I know what you mean about other ones though they're often disappointing.

weegiemum · 18/12/2021 23:06

We live in a large city and so there are a lot of options for takeaway. After some experimentation we've got both a Chinese and an Indian which produce really good food for takeaway. And of course my teen ds can always find a good munch box!

Funnylittlefloozie · 18/12/2021 23:08

If you find takeaways nasty, why don't you just order from a nicer place? I mean, it doesnt actually seem like rocket science - if the local bog-standard Chinese or Nandos doesn't float your boat, then just order Vietnamese or something. Or don't get takeaways at all if you don't like them and there isn't anything nice near you. Seems an odd sort of problem to have...!

tttigress · 18/12/2021 23:09

To be honest I prefer a Marks and Spencer King Prawn Bhuna over anything you can get at a takeaway restaurant.

A lot of takeaway stuff is extremely high in fat and food colouring.

Also I don't get why people buy takeaway pizza. If you buy a fresh pizza from the supermarket it is just as good, or maybe even better, and overall take less time to produce.

BurntO · 18/12/2021 23:13

I think you have issues with food if you equate grease to gross. It tastes fucking amazing. We all have our preferences…. It doesn’t make others gross and I don’t think your vocabulary is helpful

Hilarious!

You must be from a big city or a naice southern town Grin

When I CBA to cook I eat toast, or crisps, or whatever I can find. I thought everyone did this. I wouldn't order an expensive takeaway just because I didn't feel like cooking. I save takeaway for a treat.

TreborBore · 18/12/2021 23:13

The nearest Nandos is over 30 miles away..

gelatodipistacchio · 18/12/2021 23:13

I assume you don't have good takeaways near you. I've had gorgeous ones twice this week: one from a great Thai place, and another from a very good Indian restaurant.

That said, I am very careful about where I order from. And I hate Nandos.

I think this is normal.
