Do you find takeaways gross?

Evening

Do you find takeaways gross, and avoid them at all costs?
I generally don't order takeout, only from time to time. Maybe it's just me, but sometimes I start eating them, and I honestly can just not finish it?! And feel kinda gross after or repulsed by the food tbh.

I generally try to go for lighter, healthier takeaways, so non-greasy foods, maybe Wagamama's but I was recently put off this too. Another time I had a Nando's wrap and coleslaw without chips and that was fine.

Sometimes I don't want to cook, and feel I'll want a takeout but then when I do, it just doesn't taste right. Maybe my body isn't taking to it. I really don't know how people order takeaway every few days without feeling sick.

Apart from buying alternatives for days I don't want to cook, eg oven food or dinners that can be made really quickly . Is there anything else you suggest for when I feel I may want one? It often just feels like a waste of money after and I then feel I'd have been better off cooking.

Do those here who actively avoid takeaways always have a homemade meal ready or what do you do?

You need a takeaway from an independent. We own a restaurant and our takeaways are highly praised. But it's fresh cooking. (Not pizza or burgers etc.)

bookworm100 · 18/12/2021 21:58

I love takeaways Smile

HunterGatherer · 18/12/2021 21:58

Hmm I understand what you mean OP, all the ghee in those Indian curries, the oil in fish and chips bleugh! I'm partial to a macdonalds wrap though and they don't make me feel ill.

switswoo81 · 18/12/2021 21:59

Yanbu I always think the idea.of them is better than the actuality. I find it's nearly 40 euro for a family of 4 which is so much money.
Definitely not a superiority thing, chorizo pesto pasta is my throw together in 10 minutes treat.

coatilove · 18/12/2021 21:59

Yep OP, they always taste like leftover slop, I avoid them at all costs.

Might order a pizza at a push or collect from my favourite restaurant in town but otherwise, I pass.

TreborBore · 18/12/2021 21:59

Yes, I don’t like takeaways much, it’s the grease I can’t stand.

Darkpheonix · 18/12/2021 22:00

We have takeaways quite regularly.

The kast few weeks have been alot of takeaways due to a Bereavement and me nor having the motivation or time to cook.

But we tend to order from small local restaurants and its generally good. Tonight I had chicken satay and rice. The rice was boiled and the chicken satay is chunks of chicken breast on a kebab stick in the satay sauce they make at the restaurant. It's rich, but I just put a little bit of the sauce on.

We order from a really good local Italian restaurant and their food can be as heavy or light as you want. Depends on what you pick.

We also tend to grab some sushi/katsu/ crispy chilli beef at the fresh made counter in asda for a quick meal.

gogohm · 18/12/2021 22:01

Generally I'm disappointed and feel bloated and have heartburn afterwards, pizza being the worst by far. That said we have an excellent Vietnamese place that delivers and a lady that cooks home style Caribbean food though you have to order by Wednesday for Friday and Thursday for Saturday.

I try to have quick/easy cook food for days I don't want to cook eg pies, roast potatoes and veggies all frozen, pasta and jar of pesto plus mushrooms, frozen stir fry meals, perhaps this for antipasti or just baking potatoes and tuna

Emerald5hamrock · 18/12/2021 22:02

For quick foods I'll eat falafel, bacon, beans or chunky tinned soup with brown bread.
My favourite is pre-made lasagne with frozen chips.

ISpyCobraKai · 18/12/2021 22:02

I'm having Japanese takeaway from a place local to me on Christmas Eve.
All of it, particularly the tuna sashimi is a disgusting grease fest.

ditalini · 18/12/2021 22:02

We had thai last night. It was zingy and delicious. Big portions though so I had the other half of mine tonight.

Maybe your local takeaways are crap.

Starcup · 18/12/2021 22:03

I love a takeaway! Mouths watering now

WendyYourExcellency · 18/12/2021 22:05

Well it depends - I’m a very good cook, but may kitchen is tiny and my children are fussy, so I love to take the pressure off and have someone else do the cooking. Where I live we can get almost anything, from Polish to Malaysian, Jamaican to Ghanaian. I often feel I could cook whatever I’ve ordered just as well myself, but I haven’t had to, and that’s the point.

Cryalot2 · 18/12/2021 22:05

I have food intolerances and McDonald's plain burger in an unseeded bap and fries are safe .
With so many other places I just have to avoid.

There is a great local high end cafe, which lets you choose your own roll/breads and fillings. I frequently get carry out of something. But they do tend to run out of supplies.

Cheeseandlobster · 18/12/2021 22:05

@nosyupnorth

oooooh look at you, so special and superior to us greasy gross takeaway eaters

eat your damn salad, they don't take any cooking so I don't know why you think anyone would believe you playing dumb so you can humblebrag to the internet

I am sorry but I agree. You come across as a bit superior and that you are looking for people to say what a much better person you are for shunning the evil takeaway. Yes some takeaways are shite but not all. You need to find the ones that you do enjoy
Emerald5hamrock · 18/12/2021 22:06

Why are you so offended, lots of people don't like takeaway. 🤔
Someone pissed on your chips today.

Mum2jenny · 18/12/2021 22:07

I think it does depend on what you order though.
If you want a greasy kebab, that’s fine but a lot of other takeaways are much healthier.

WendyYourExcellency · 18/12/2021 22:07

@nosyupnorth, tend to agree there’s an air of ‘oooh how could you possibly eat takeaways…!’ Well it’s because they can be delicious and I can be lazy. No shame in that!

lilmishap · 18/12/2021 22:08

Are you really asking people if you don't want a takeaway do you eat other food?

Yes we all manage to feed ourselves

Apricotblue · 18/12/2021 22:08

Yes, I’m totally like this. We didn’t eat them growing up and I think that’s why I can’t stomach them now. I’m not sure if it’s MSG or the salt but I just can’t eat them.
If I’m in a non cooking mood I’ll have soup or beans on toast.

It’s not a judgement of others though I have a bad sweet tooth, I feel awful after eating a take away

foxgoosefinch · 18/12/2021 22:08

I know what you mean, we rarely eat them. We had a couple of honest burger deliveries during lockdown, but generally don’t order takeaways. I’d rather have a decent quality ready meal or just a sandwich or soup - takeaways always seem to be so greasy in the packs! And where I live you just can’t get decent fish and chips, so I wait to have some proper takeway fish once a year when I’m up in the North visiting my mum.

CactusLemonSpice · 18/12/2021 22:10

It depends on the takeaway, and the variety and number of options where you live.

Many takeaways are not very nice, many are fantastic. Sometimes you can tell by the reviews, sometimes you have to sample them all to find your favourite. I recommend option b. ;)

Warmduscher · 18/12/2021 22:11

We had Japanese takeaway tonight.

Three out of four of us have covid and I couldn’t work out how to cook safely for all of us.

Our local Thai street food cafe (Zaap) is amazing - the food is so fresh and light and you don’t have that food regret at the end of it.

The only takeaway I would agree with the OP about is crap pizza - Dominos or Papa Johns. It always seems such a good idea at the time but when it arrives I always think, why did we order this?

Tanfastic · 18/12/2021 22:14

I love takeaways. Can't beat a bit of grease Grin

Hankunamatata · 18/12/2021 22:14
