Do you find takeaways gross?

Evening

Do you find takeaways gross, and avoid them at all costs?
I generally don't order takeout, only from time to time. Maybe it's just me, but sometimes I start eating them, and I honestly can just not finish it?! And feel kinda gross after or repulsed by the food tbh.

I generally try to go for lighter, healthier takeaways, so non-greasy foods, maybe Wagamama's but I was recently put off this too. Another time I had a Nando's wrap and coleslaw without chips and that was fine.

Sometimes I don't want to cook, and feel I'll want a takeout but then when I do, it just doesn't taste right. Maybe my body isn't taking to it. I really don't know how people order takeaway every few days without feeling sick.

Apart from buying alternatives for days I don't want to cook, eg oven food or dinners that can be made really quickly . Is there anything else you suggest for when I feel I may want one? It often just feels like a waste of money after and I then feel I'd have been better off cooking.

Do those here who actively avoid takeaways always have a homemade meal ready or what do you do?

During lockdown a Michelin Star restaurant did take out friends who own a restaurant ordered a three course meal for their anniversary. They were disappointed but said putting a complete meal in a container you lose the individual flavours as it marinated

shinynewapple21 · 18/12/2021 23:26

I understand what you mean OP - DH often orders takeaway but if I don't fancy it I'll just have a snack (soup or something). I tend to only eat particular takeaways .

Indian - to my mind this is the nicest. I often have a starter portion or veg side dish and add cauliflower rice .

I'll occasionally eat McDonalds (filet of fish and an apple pie ) or chip shop (small fish and pinch a few chips)

I don't eat KFC and don't really like takeaway pizza or Chinese takeaway (although occasionally would have chips and sauce in a tray)

Curiousmouse · 18/12/2021 23:27

Occasional nice Thai or Indian but lots of takeaways are gross, and greasy.

TractorAndHeadphones · 18/12/2021 23:29

@RobinPenguins

Ok, but curry and Chinese aren’t the only takeaways…
Wrong. . Chinese/Indian or a fry-up are standard options and most places have at least one of these. In many they are the only options. I thought the same as you when I used to live in central London. And then I moved to the semi-rural North West.
Moonshine5 · 18/12/2021 23:31

100 % disagree. Depends where you live. We can have delivered a vast array of meals, from super healthy to not so healthy.

Winniemarysarah · 18/12/2021 23:32

I think the op’s issue is she lives in an area with either a shit choice of takeaways, or she’s making the wrong choices. You can’t just declare ALL takeaways are greasy and unhealthy and make you feel like shit. I have takeaways in my area that specialise is meal prep. You can choose the ratio of protein/fat/carb content. My last takeaway was African mixed beans with jallof rice. It’s one of the highest carb/fattiest dishes on the menu, but it still has zero oil in it, the entire dish is 420 calories and contains 4 of your 5 a day fruit and veg. The op is clearly not posting because she actually has no idea what to eat apart from takeaways which all make her sick (apparently). Salads don’t need cooking and jackets take 5 mins in the micro

Heruka · 18/12/2021 23:37

Locally to me I feel the same as you. Still do get takeaways now and again when I can’t be bothered to cook but almost always regret it as they are just not good quality. I wish there were more fresh and tasty options like Wagamama. Nearest one to me is 15min drive so takeaway doesn’t work well. There’s also little for veggies round here. My sister who lives in London is spoiled for choice of (expensive) takeaway and it would be more of a treat than a cba cooking option. For me a treat would be driving to somewhere that has nice food and eating out.

TractorAndHeadphones · 18/12/2021 23:38

@Notdoingthis

When I CBA to cook I eat toast, or crisps, or whatever I can find. I thought everyone did this. I wouldn't order an expensive takeaway just because I didn't feel like cooking. I save takeaway for a treat.
I can get multiple meals out of a single takeaway (not MN salad mind you I'm petite ; under 5 feet Grin). Also some things like fried chicken I can shred and put into other food like fried rice or noodles. I'm very careful when I order my 'CBA to cook' takeaways. Usually this happens when I'd need to tidy/wash up in order to start cooking, or there's nothing in the fridge.

Things that I can't keep like burgers or ramen I consider treat takeaways and I save these for going out.

Winniemarysarah · 18/12/2021 23:44

@TractorAndHeadphones even if there are only chinese/Indian options, there are still healthy options. A good base which both always do is boiled rice, then any vegetable dish, you can ask for the sauce to be served on the side so you can control how much to add, or just ask for it to be lightly stir fried. Chicken and veg with black bean sauce or beef and broccoli are full of anti oxidants and nutrients. A lot of restaurants will happily steam your food to make it even healthier.

lilmishap · 18/12/2021 23:45

@TractorAndHeadphones so in the northwest you don't have pizza kebab options?

You sure about that as it sounds like bs

lilmishap · 18/12/2021 23:47

@TractorAndHeadphones where you getting fried chicken from if chinese/indian are the only options?
Make your mind up

Peccary · 18/12/2021 23:49

Variety of takeaway is one of the few things I miss from the city. That said, our weekly takeaway is either Sri Lankan, Thai or Indian (I can't eat Chinese), none of these seem overly heavy or greasy to me.

I'm in a slowly gentrifying Northern mill town, the options have been gradually improving.

OP is expecting a pat on the back for being too delicate to eat takeaways.

She says "apart from cooking ready meals or fresh meals or takeaways what else should i eat"
I dunno love, pick n mix?? Freshly grown rainbow chard from your windowsill box raw?

If you wanna slag off your local pizza place just say my local pizza place is shit.

Don't pretend it's an existential life crisis

It's "jollof" rice not "jallof".

Secondly you're on some BS. I'm not posting because I eat takeaway everyday, how does that make sense. I literally said I don't know how people eat takeaway away every few days without being sick, which clearly implies I don't eat them often. So what you said about living in an area without a huge choice of takeaway options is more correct.

I did say Chinese/Indian or a fry-up, and that i was in the semi-rural North West. Not sure how you jumped from that to the entire North West.

Don't know why you're so angry but maybe you should try some meditation instead of taking it out on internet strangers.

WorraLiberty · 19/12/2021 00:11

Not a whole one I hope?
RobinPenguins · 19/12/2021 00:12

Wrong. .

I’ve never lived in central London in my life. I’ve just opened Deliveroo, it’s after midnight and there are 35 options still available.

If OP lives somewhere the only options are an Indian and a Chinese then I’m not quite sure what they’re basing the “all takeaways are rank” assertion on when they clearly have extremely limited takeaway options available to them. A more accurate statement (if this wasn’t in fact all just a massive humblebrag about their superior, clean living palate) would be “the takeaways in my village are shit”.

RobinPenguins · 19/12/2021 00:13

@WhatScratch

So much oil. Rank.
Quirkyme · 19/12/2021 00:15

There isn't really a need for the comments taking the piss on here. Being told I'm foodshaming and all other sorts is crap. If you choose to eat a takeaway every few days and enjoy it - cool, as some here said they do without the added BS.

"I lick a chip and I'm full" "hope it's not rank" yada yada.

And the bitter angry comment with so much anger. It's ridiculous.

OP posts:
MrsJBaptiste · 19/12/2021 00:18

I don't give a shit if it doesn't taste amazing, after a couple of bottles of wine a takeaway does the job of lining my stomach before I go to bed.

PickAChew · 19/12/2021 00:20

I generally find them disappointing. I only really bother with fish and chips as we have an excellent one in our doorstep. Occasionally Indian though the dairy content usually catches me out as I don't tolerate a lot of it. I don't really lik e paying more for food that makes me ill, though.

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 19/12/2021 00:20

I don’t like most takeaways, curry or fish & chips, Chinese etc are all too salty, too greasy, give me heartburn and reflux all night

I always love the first few bites

But it’s not worth it, I get bloated and feel sick

I used to like Wagamama but not had it for years, may try

Rubyupbeat · 19/12/2021 00:23

Define Takeaway?
During lockdown, some of the really nice restaurants were delivering food.
Plus areas are different generally, we can get a nice fresh quinoa and avocado salad delivered here or a 35 quid vegan burger or a trad chinese, varies immensely!

TractorAndHeadphones · 19/12/2021 00:24

My definition of healthy is compared to my home cooked version of the same dish. By that metric those aren't healthy.
If you're comparing it to sweet and sour chicken or McDonald's then yeah it's healthy but that's not what I'm comparing it to.
Also what are you referring to steaming - vegetables? Fair enough if it's something stir-fried with a sauce poured over, but even then the stir fry isn't going to contribute much if you're going to add to the sauce.

At the end of the day this is all opinion but some people are more sensitive to greasy stuff and OP is one of those. By the same token some people are the opposite and can't stand salads, cold foods etc that have nothing oil- based. My taste is similar to the OP hence why I get what she's saying. Someone who doesn't notice probably won't get it.
