Do you find takeaways gross?

Evening

Do you find takeaways gross, and avoid them at all costs?
I generally don't order takeout, only from time to time. Maybe it's just me, but sometimes I start eating them, and I honestly can just not finish it?! And feel kinda gross after or repulsed by the food tbh.

I generally try to go for lighter, healthier takeaways, so non-greasy foods, maybe Wagamama's but I was recently put off this too. Another time I had a Nando's wrap and coleslaw without chips and that was fine.

Sometimes I don't want to cook, and feel I'll want a takeout but then when I do, it just doesn't taste right. Maybe my body isn't taking to it. I really don't know how people order takeaway every few days without feeling sick.

Apart from buying alternatives for days I don't want to cook, eg oven food or dinners that can be made really quickly . Is there anything else you suggest for when I feel I may want one? It often just feels like a waste of money after and I then feel I'd have been better off cooking.

Do those here who actively avoid takeaways always have a homemade meal ready or what do you do?

They are gross. Fast food to me is a deli cooked chicken, bag of salad, bakery bread and butter.
We received a takeaway menu flier through the door this week and I couldn't see scores on the doors rating. Googled the council website and said eatery (Whaley Kebab House if anyone would like to sample their slurry) had the glorious score of 1 out of 5 Confused.

I don't like take-out and I don't buy it. The quality of ethnic food (Indian/ Chinese/ Thai etc.) in Germany is appalling, save for Turkish and even then you need a decent restaurant. Most Döner places are disgusting. Its also really expensive. (I've had decent ethnic food in Berlin but mostly its unseasoned slop or dry, rubbery sushi.)

I just don't bother. If I lived in Britain I'd be the size of a house - so many lovely things to eat. Proper Indian, Nandos, all the Asian food types. I'm so jealous of you British MNers!

@WhatScratch

I’m sorry if I upset you or made you feel ‘got at.’

If takeaway makes you feel ‘gross after’ or you’re ‘repulsed by the food’ then find something that you do enjoy and buy that instead. M&S microwaveable ready meals or a pack of their ready to eat flavoured chicken breast pieces with one of their boxed salads and fresh bread or a ready to cook stir fry veg pack, noodles, protein and a sauce that can be cooked in minutes in one pan.

I don't think you need to apologise @WhatScratch - OP was quite happy to pick at other peoples food choices but didn't like it when the tables turned and they did the same to her.

Don't dish it out if you're not willing to take it Wink

ThinWomansBrain · 19/12/2021 09:29

I just think they're an enormous waste of money - could afford them if I wanted to, but cheaper and easier to get something from the supermarket.

doadeer · 19/12/2021 09:32

Depends what it is! I live in London and we have a masssssive selection. It's very different to where I grew up and it was very greasy noodles or cheap pizzas.

ivykaty44 · 19/12/2021 09:33

I make my own ready meals & freeze them, defrost and cook

furbabymama87 · 19/12/2021 09:34

Sometimes. I tend to order the same things, usually they get it perfect, other times it's not right and I don't enjoy it. Usually if its burnt, cold, greasy or it's got too much sauce or not enough. I order from the same 4 places and it's normally nice but there has been the odd time when its not.

ivykaty44 · 19/12/2021 09:34

Not all the time, we do have takeaways occasionally

morechocolateneededtoday · 19/12/2021 09:38

Rarely ever eat take aways - if spending the money, prefer the experience of eating in a restaurant. Post children, we also don't tend to go out to eat much either but we love cooking and happy eating at home (spent a lot when we renovated our kitchen in making it perfect for us!)

We always have at least 2 full meals in freezer to defrost when we are too lazy to cook

Stuckhere2021 · 19/12/2021 09:48

I started to write a different response to this then thought I cba. However my brunch today will be last night’s Chinese leftovers so make of that what you will Grin

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 19/12/2021 09:49

We don't have takeaways.

My easy meal is precooked chicken breast from the supermarket and this from Waitrose

and baby plum tomatoes and beatroot.

TinySaltLick · 19/12/2021 09:50

If you order from shit takeaways you can expect to get shit takeaway

I freeze this even though it doesn't say you can and defrost in the fridge in the morning to eat in the evening

NotJustACigar · 19/12/2021 09:57

YANBU. I've been sent a voucher for £15 off uber eats and I don't think I even want to use it. I prefer fresh healthy food. If I could get that from a takeaway here I'd be all for it but the ones around me seem to rely on grease and salt for flavour, and the cuts of meat they use are cheap and nasty.

TheVolturi · 19/12/2021 10:01

I used to absolutely love takeaways. Kebabs, pizza, Chinese and Indian. However since having my last child 4 years ago I can't stomach them at all! And they are usually disappointing as well. Doesn't help that around here the takeaways are not great hygiene ratings either so puts me off in the first place.

Inextremis · 19/12/2021 10:02

I live two miles outside a tiny village in the west of Ireland. We dream of takeaways. I've not had one for over two years - but if this bloody Covid thing ever goes away and I get back to the UK for a week - I plan on diving into the local burger place (Grubbs, in Brighton, if anyone knows it - I hear most of their outlets closed, but think there's still one open?) and ordering the biggest, greasiest burger they have, with chilli sauce. After that I'll probably order a Domino's pizza (with anchovies, and jalapenos) to be delivered to my hotel room.

I may well be a bit ill after the feast (it has been known) - but I will have loved every moment of stuffing the hot greasy messes into my mouth. Of course they're not healthy, but who cares?

MrsClatterbuck · 19/12/2021 10:04

Some of our local restaurants and cafes do takeaway. Same food as served to those who sit in. Perhaps that would be more palatable for you.

Iwouldlikesomecake · 19/12/2021 10:05

This thread is ridiculous. No, all takeaway food is not ‘disgusting’. We get a curry maybe once a month from the curry house 5 mins from our house and sometimes we eat in. They have won national restaurant awards. The food is not somehow different because they put it in a box and we pick it up 🤔

There’s a great fish and chip shop near my mum and dad’s too. Portions are massive so we just share. Not spectacularly unhealthy, just common sense really…

ButtercupsOurGold · 19/12/2021 10:15

We've got tons of options where we are and we like them. If we don't like anything we don't reorder. My teenagers tend to save leftovers for the next day

Always nice the next morning I find. Could murder a spring roll right now.

Idontlikeworms · 19/12/2021 10:26

@WhatScratch

I hope that chip does your whole family and you have leftovers. Pure gluttony in my opinion

saleorbouy · 19/12/2021 10:48

I don't mind the odd take away but we tend to do larger portions of meals during the week so that we can freeze a few portions for the hectic nights with loads of after school activities. Most can be served with rice, pasta or salad so its a quick defrost and reheat while the accompaniment is cooked/made.

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/12/2021 10:49

If you don’t like them, don’t order them?

Butchyrestingface · 19/12/2021 10:53

I don't find takeaways gross as such, but like many things, I think the IDEA of them is far better than the wet, soggy reality.
