Do you find takeaways gross?

Evening

Do you find takeaways gross, and avoid them at all costs?
I generally don't order takeout, only from time to time. Maybe it's just me, but sometimes I start eating them, and I honestly can just not finish it?! And feel kinda gross after or repulsed by the food tbh.

I generally try to go for lighter, healthier takeaways, so non-greasy foods, maybe Wagamama's but I was recently put off this too. Another time I had a Nando's wrap and coleslaw without chips and that was fine.

Sometimes I don't want to cook, and feel I'll want a takeout but then when I do, it just doesn't taste right. Maybe my body isn't taking to it. I really don't know how people order takeaway every few days without feeling sick.

Apart from buying alternatives for days I don't want to cook, eg oven food or dinners that can be made really quickly . Is there anything else you suggest for when I feel I may want one? It often just feels like a waste of money after and I then feel I'd have been better off cooking.

Do those here who actively avoid takeaways always have a homemade meal ready or what do you do?

You can freeze wraps/flatbread.
You can buy frozen falafel.
All of this microwaves in a couple of minutes - add a bag of salad or some chopped lettuce and you're good to go.

"Nice" tins of soup, + bread

Beans, baked potato, frozen veg

Btw it depends on the takeaway, the local Lebanese & Thai places do pretty fresh & healthy stuff, and even the Indian & Chinese can be ok depending on what you choose.

Just realised we've got a Lebanese place down the road. Might have to try that. I'm sure we've got Thai too

YANBU. I've been sent a voucher for £15 off uber eats and I don't think I even want to use it. I prefer fresh healthy food. If I could get that from a takeaway here I'd be all for it but the ones around me seem to rely on grease and salt for flavour, and the cuts of meat they use are cheap and nasty.
I used it to get groceries from the local shop.
Roominmyhouse · 19/12/2021 11:57

We don’t get takeaways that often but we have some excellent places locally which are not greasy and disgusting. A local kebab shop delivers delish smokey chargrilled meat and fresh salad with a pitta. Not greasy if you avoid the chips and sauces. Our local Indian is also tasty and not greasy. But equally you can get a big old greasy pizza if you are in the mood which sometimes I am!

JanisMoplin · 19/12/2021 12:13

I make a large pot of daal and freeze it in ziplocks for cba days.

CharSiu · 19/12/2021 12:19

I like having fish and chips as it’s not something I would cook at home. Pizza seems an actual waste of money as it’s just bread and cheese, we have had it though and DH and DS love takeaway pizza. I like buying ready made bases and putting my own topping on.

I have rarely if ever liked any Chinese take away ever, however I’m Chinese and it bears no resemblance to what I or any of my family cook. When I read the Chinese take away threads I always wish people could try authentic Chinese food.

Takeaway food does tend to be low quality, if people want to eat that it’s fine but we rarely do.

I love a takeaway, we have once a month. I'm cooking for 7 most of the time (will be 8 soon when baby weans) and it's nice to have a break from cooking.

I am Indian, and most ( not all) of the greasy slop sold as takeaways in the UK bears no resemblance to anything I cook at home. It is usually made with the same gravy base and a half inch of oil at the top.

We occasionally have a takeaway. Indian last night from a very good restaurant. We go there and have a small glass of wine while waiting rather than have it delivered. Also pizza occasionally.

Hemingwayscatz · 19/12/2021 12:38

I always enjoy an Indian from our favourite take away but we have had some ghastly ones over the years. The portions from Chinese takeaways are absolutely huge and despite being a family of seven, we never finish them so a lot ends up wasted. Pizza is almost always a disappointment, just too greasy.

It wouldn't be wasted in our house. It would go in the fridge to be eaten the next day. Probably for breakfast.

malificent7 · 19/12/2021 13:01

I like crispy duck from my local Chinese.

Draggondragon · 19/12/2021 13:04

This weekend so far we have had the following deliveries. Jamie Oliver Pizza, PF Changs and cheesecake factory meatloaf and mash. All lush apart from the meatloaf because I am veggie. Some will go in the freezer, the rest is just being grazed. I bless the day food started arriving at the door from places other than the dodgy kebab shop or Chinese takeaway.

kweeble · 19/12/2021 13:32

My last curry was horrid and so many plastic containers that had cracked so it was a mess. I ended up with more rubbish from one meal than I have in a whole week.
We do have a very good pizza company that delivers.

Why do you need to waste it? Just store it in the fridge and re-heat it the next day.
OldaRailer · 19/12/2021 14:07

Our local ones aren't great.
Is rather stick to beans on toast for a night.

Cheeseandlobster · 19/12/2021 14:14

@Inextremis

I live two miles outside a tiny village in the west of Ireland. We dream of takeaways. I've not had one for over two years - but if this bloody Covid thing ever goes away and I get back to the UK for a week - I plan on diving into the local burger place (Grubbs, in Brighton, if anyone knows it - I hear most of their outlets closed, but think there's still one open?) and ordering the biggest, greasiest burger they have, with chilli sauce. After that I'll probably order a Domino's pizza (with anchovies, and jalapenos) to be delivered to my hotel room.

I may well be a bit ill after the feast (it has been known) - but I will have loved every moment of stuffing the hot greasy messes into my mouth. Of course they're not healthy, but who cares?

I remember Grubbs. I remember Grubbs!! I have fond memories of their burgers circa 1998 Smile
Itsnotdeep · 19/12/2021 14:22

I avoid them too - they generally make me feel sick. And the calories just aren't worth it for me.

If I don't want to cook, I just snack from the kitchen - toast usually.

I'm not judging anyone who does like them.

GaolBhoAlba · 19/12/2021 14:41

We share a curry from our favourite place every Friday night. Love it 😋

It wouldn't be wasted if you ordered less which is quite easy to do, especially with a family of seven Xmas Confused
JustDanceAddict · 19/12/2021 14:49

I really have to be in the mood, although we got a good pizza from a local Italian the other week. Sushi is good too as much cheaper to takeaway and I find sushi restaurants a bit devoid of atmosphere.

A good alternative is Cook shops where you buy good quality frozen meals - haven’t done that for a while.

BoredZelda · 19/12/2021 15:28

However, comments such as "food shaming" isn't. Just a cop out for people that may eat shit to continue eating it. Cant say anything without it "shaming" when really it's not shaming anyone at all.

Why say anything at all? I mean, you aren’t looking for advice, or to find out any real information, you keep referring to people who eat shit food and every post is judgemental. So, if you aren’t shaming, or judging what is the point of the post?

BoredZelda · 19/12/2021 15:30

Exactly, we order 2 meals for 3 of us.

Although, when we had guests the other week, we ordered 4 meals for 7 of us and as our order was more than 35 quid, they threw in extra food for free and we ended up with too much 😆

PlanktonsComputerWife · 19/12/2021 15:36

Mostly awful, but there is a local Thai food van which makes very light dishes, with plenty of protein and vegetables. Would never order anything else.

GiltEdges · 19/12/2021 15:41

I do enjoy the occasional takeaway, but tend to stick with things like Italian where I can have a pasta dish (minus cheese), rather than anything too heavy. A lot of takeaways are really carb heavy as well as fatty, which leaves me feeling a bit meh.

To be honest, I could happily live without takeaways altogether if DH didn't enjoy them as much as he does. When I fancy something easy I'll generally make myself some pasta or gnocchi with jar pesto, or the filled supermarket raviolis.
