To feel so upset by the death of the poor 10 year old boy last night who was killed by a dog in Caerphilly.
My own son was mauled by a dog at 14 months old he has scars but he is here.
I remember the terror and the fear of it when it was happening and i can't help to feel it now knowing that is what that poor little boy went through last night.
His poor family must be going through the worst pain imaginable and i just feel so so sad for them.
I don't know why this case has really hit me but it has.

Just one in a line of children killed by dogs. It is upsetting but owners won't change their behaviour "oh he won't hurt anyone" until he does!

Kljnmw3459 · 09/11/2021 17:39

It's upsetting, so tragic.

PurpleDaisies · 09/11/2021 17:40

It’s just awful. It’s totally not surprising that this has brought back horrible memories.Flowers

RunningFromInsanity · 09/11/2021 17:43

It’s absolutely devastating and yet the more you read about it the more you can see it was just waiting to happen and he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The dog had bitten before, killed a cat and yet two young children were left home alone with it.

I am a dog owner and I actually work kind of in dog law and sadly the law, the police and the courts are just too soft on dog offences

Suzanne999 · 09/11/2021 17:47

I’m not surprised you’re feeling traumatised; this must have brought back disturbing memories for you.
I don’t know what type of dog it was ( in Caerphilly) or it’s history but I’d never leave a child alone with my dog even though she’s never bitten anything in her life.

funinthesun19 · 09/11/2021 17:50

It’s really upset me too. I have a 10 year old son and I cannot imagine the pain his family are going through right now. Heartbreaking.

Just further reinforces my view that dogs are dangerous and have the potential to do this. I don’t care what counter argument dog lovers have. Dogs are dogs.

Aberteifi · 09/11/2021 17:54

There has been other poor children killed by dogs over the years sadly but i don't know why this one has really got to me.
My own son will be 9 in a few weeks so its been a few years.
From what I've read it was a big dog but i had not read that the children were left alone or that the dog had bitten before,
If your dog has bitten before why would you take the risk i don't understand it.

I found this so upsetting too OP - I can’t stop thinking about how terrified that poor boy must have been.

I’ve read a few articles about what happened and it sounds incredibly traumatic for all who witnessed the attack.

That poor boy, his family must be devastated, I just can’t imagine Sad

If Twitter is to be believed they'd only had it a week, and it had already bitten someone when tied up outside a shop.

The old owners were utterly irresponsible for rehoming this dog to someone with kids, and the new owners appear to have been both irresponsible (in allowing a child visitor in this context) and out of their depth in dealing with such a dog.

An awful case all round. No doubt the people who owned this dog until last week will get off scot free.

ALbigbump · 09/11/2021 18:03

Same here, I’ve not been able to stop thinking about the poor boy and his family. It’s so sad

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 09/11/2021 18:04

He wasn't in his own home was he? I think it was a friend's house and presumably their dog. If possible that's even sadder.

Annonnimoouse42 · 09/11/2021 18:08

waiting to hear from the usual Pitbull apologists

StoneofDestiny · 09/11/2021 18:09

Of course everybody is sad and the family devastated, but this will not be the last death of a child killed by a dog unless the rules of dog ownership is changed in law - starting with 'dangerous' breeds.

EmergencyHydrangea · 09/11/2021 18:10

I live in caerphilly and I can't say I'm surprised. There's a big dangerous dog on my estate. It kills cats attacks other dogs, and lunges at children. Its only a matter of time before it hurts a child or worse. The police know about it and are not doing anything

RunningFromInsanity · 09/11/2021 18:15

It’s not all about targeting specific breeds because then people naively relax around Labradors etc. Besides they tried that with the 4 banned breeds and statistics show it hasn’t worked Sad

It should be one strike and you’re out.

One bite incident and the dog should be muzzled/on lead, not in a family around children.
Dogs with bite tendencies should never be rehomed.
Far too many animal trainers thinking they can rehab aggressive dogs.
National database of all dogs and people involved in incidents.

Was it definitely a pitbull then?

I see it was a large and aggressive dog from this one news article, but can't find the breed anywhere on any other news articles.

www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/caerphilly-dog-attack-everything-know-22116545

Not gonna be a red setter, a border collie, a Scottish terrier, or a poodle though is it? Or even a labrador or a greyhound, It's going to be one of those certain type of dogs from that certain type of person/family.

And you're right that the apologists will be out soon ... The NAPALT brigade (not all pitbulls are like that.)

@Aberteifi YANBU to be upset, obviously. It's tragic what has happened.

DontWantTheRivalry · 09/11/2021 18:22

I had read that it was an American Pitbull.

EmergencyHydrangea · 09/11/2021 18:24

@DontWantTheRivalry

I had read that it was an American Pitbull.
Where? I haven't read that in any of the local news
IGotHam · 09/11/2021 18:25

The whole thing is so distressing and unnecessary. I hope the negligent dog owners get locked up.

LittleDandelionClock · 09/11/2021 18:26

@DontWantTheRivalry

Where did you read this?

DontWantTheRivalry · 09/11/2021 18:27

I’m sure it was in an article from one of the local papers. I will see if I can find it again.

RunningFromInsanity · 09/11/2021 18:28

I read American bulldog/ pitbull type
tempchecked · 09/11/2021 18:28

So sad. But while I await flaming I think there are far far too many dogs around. You just never know if and when they might attack, bite, knock down, be aggressive and so on.

Of course some will say it's the owner's fault. It is not, dogs should not be allowed as pets anywhere in an urban setting, just allowed as working dogs i.e. sheepdogs, rat catchers etc. in the countryside. They know their place. A dog is inherently an attack animal with territory, and that instinct is merely trained out of them, but their instinct very often breaks through. As we have seen countless times from many different types of breeds.

Without exception they are potentially dangerous. Many are very fearful of them. I make no apologies for hoping that humans are valued more than animals in the potential dog aggression stakes.

I hope the young boy's family will find peace somehow.

StoneofDestiny · 09/11/2021 18:28

RunningFromInsanity

I agree with you. I'm pointing at a starting point, but ultimately many dogs can be trained to be 'dangerous'.
We need leash laws, compulsory registration, license fees, huge fines for dog soiling etc. The money can go to set up dog parks and for the dog bins and dog wardens.
We are so very lax about who can own a dog and how owners control them. Dogs out on the loose need to be seized by dog wardens.

The Mail say it was American Pitt bull type www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10179337/Boy-10-dies-attacked-dog-shot-dead-armed-police-Caerphilly.html
