To be so upset about the death of Jack Lis last night

To feel so upset by the death of the poor 10 year old boy last night who was killed by a dog in Caerphilly.
My own son was mauled by a dog at 14 months old he has scars but he is here.
I remember the terror and the fear of it when it was happening and i can't help to feel it now knowing that is what that poor little boy went through last night.
His poor family must be going through the worst pain imaginable and i just feel so so sad for them.
I don't know why this case has really hit me but it has.

Of course some will say it's the owner's fault

Ultimately it is, but it's no consolation to a grieving family whose fault it is. Control is needed enforced by law.

SpidersAreShitheads · 09/11/2021 18:31

I read it was an "American Pitbull-style" dog too - several sources, here's one: www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/jack-lis-boy-dog-attack-caerphilly-south-wales-b965171.html.

Awful news, and my heart goes out to his family.

Any dog, no matter how well trained or well behaved they are, can turn and snap or bite someone - it just needs the right circumstances.

As a dog owner I am very conscious that my dogs could injure someone - adult or child. And whilst I adore them and they are well trained (after a lot of time and effort) I would never leave them alone with someone they don't know - let alone a child.

I agree with you. I'm pointing at a starting point, but ultimately many dogs can be trained to be 'dangerous'.
We need leash laws, compulsory registration, license fees, huge fines for dog soiling etc. The money can go to set up dog parks and for the dog bins and dog wardens.
We are so very lax about who can own a dog and how owners control them. Dogs out on the loose need to be seized by dog wardens.

Yes I agree with this. I have spent a lot of years in animal rescue and further controls - and enforcement - would benefit everyone including dogs.
IHateCoronavirus · 09/11/2021 18:34

Poor little lad. So sad. I imagine for you op it is bringing back bad memories.

JustDanceAddict · 09/11/2021 18:35

It’s awful.
My very tall teenage ds was chased by a very large dog recently (ds walking down the street minding his own business)! and it really scared him. The dog went up on his hind legs to DS but thankfully the owner dragged him off. We think the dog went on to bite someone in the local park (a dog did, but he couldn’t be 100% sure it was that actual dog although his description fit it perfectly as did the area it happened (I have seen it twice independently after it chased DS but not since the biting incident.

Mythroatisstillsore · 09/11/2021 18:38

God why are there no proper stringent controls on dogs like this. As someone else said sure as hell it wasn't a Red Setter, Collie, Labrador, Poodle etc. We all know what kind of dog it will likely be long before the details are released

RunningFromInsanity · 09/11/2021 18:39

@BackBackBack @StoneofDestiny
I am a dog warden and we can’t do shit. Police don’t want to know, Councils won’t take private prosecutions forward.
I issue pointless warnings, do the most that I can and pray that the next death isn’t on my patch Sad

Agree tighter controls, leash laws, registration etc is needed.

(I do seize all loose dogs)

Ponoka7 · 09/11/2021 18:39

It was described in the Daily Mail as an American type Pitbull. One of the neighbours has described it as being a big heavy breed, it sounds like an XL Bully. These dogs need experienced owners and they should never be left alone with children. They need careful handling and socialisation.

Spiceup · 09/11/2021 18:40

I think this one is particularly distressing because the boy was of an age/size where you surely think he would be OK. When a small child dies from a dog attack, whilst it's horrific, it's not surprising they were so vulnerable. It's shocking to hear that a dog is capable of killing a 10yo.

Also this boy was playing at a friend's house, which is what all our DC do at that age. We feel that an attack on a baby is preventable. "We" wouldn't leave our babies in a situation where it would happen, but our 10yos....

LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 · 09/11/2021 18:43

Local news pages are saying it was a XXL bully - American pit bull hybrid.

Good dog killings in the U.K. it’s clear that pitbulls and all crosses from pitbulls should be banned. Owners are ultimately responsible but it’s very clear this is a very dangerous breed.

Babyvenusplant · 09/11/2021 18:44

I live about 5 mins away from this area, makes me feels absolutely sick to think about what that poor boy endured. Cannot even begin to imagine what his family are going through Sad

authenticforgery · 09/11/2021 18:45

We all know what type of dog it'll be.

rbmilliner · 09/11/2021 18:46

I can remember being almost physically sick when a dog (no idea of breed) licked my 3 year old DD from almost top to toe. We were just walking through the park and it and my dd were face to face. It just literally licked her in one massive lick. The owner just jovially walked on! The thought of how much worse it could had been still makes me shudder so of course OP this will bring back horrific memories for you Flowers

TheWeeDonkey · 09/11/2021 18:47

I was thinking that too @Spiceup

My son's much older but at that age he and his friends were always in and out of each other's houses. Its such an ordinary thing to do. Poor baby, I can't begin to imagine what his family are going through and his friend who witnessed it all. Its just all so terrible.

We see the most horrendous cruelty cases. 99% of the time even the RSPCA don't want to know.

Animal rescue is the worst work I have ever done. It's utterly heartbreaking, and makes you so cynical about human beings and their laziness and ignorance. The pathetic shite I have heard over the years about why a dog is in a mess, why a dog is being given up ('we have a baby now so we don't need a dog any more'). The only thing that keeps me going back is the dogs. But bloody hell it tears me up inside when even the most frail, starved, beaten dog with a gash where its chip used to be and cigarette burns all over it, can still wag its tail at you when you are kind to it.

100% and helping those dogs is what keeps me going.

BackBackBack · 09/11/2021 18:51

And if I had a pound for every time I have heard "oh it's OK he's friendly" as a manic dog comes racing up to mine when I am out walking. And the number of times I have seen badly behaved dogs knocking over toddlers, stealing footballs or food - and the lazy arse owners think it's funny...

If you can't control your dog then it shouldn't be off the bloody lead in public - simple as. And if you can't be bothered to train your dog and take responsibility when it does something wrong, then you shouldn't have it in the first place.

SO it is a pitbull then.

Shoulda guessed. Sad

ofwarren · 09/11/2021 18:57

What is the law with Pitt bulls? I assumed they were illegal but looking at the list of dogs that have killed over the last 10 years, the majority are Pitt bull crosses.

Lampzade · 09/11/2021 18:58

Absolutely tragic
I really don’t want to hear from the pit bull dog apologists today

flippertyop · 09/11/2021 19:00

A certain type of dog from a certain type of family .... what exactly is that then. What is a dangerous dog? I have a dog that have been used traditionally for police work. Am I a certain type of person then?
I will say though I would never get my type of dog from a rescue because I have kids and they have friends round. I have bought from a responsible breeder and my dog has been properly trained and socialised. Although apparently I must be a certain type of person to have her Confused

TheWeeDonkey · 09/11/2021 19:03

@flippertyop This is a thread about a boy who has been killed in the most horrific circumstances, but yes, lets make it all about you Hmm

GoodVibesHere · 09/11/2021 19:03

Totally agree with @tempchecked

Dogs in a working setting yes. However, being kept as pets in urban areas they are a always going to be a problem. Why on earth do people want a pet that is capable of killing a child.

And to think so many more places now (including cafes) are 'dog-friendly', it makes me shudder.
