Inspired by a comment on another thread.

How do you and your family make porridge? I was brought up to boil the oats (rolled oats preferably) with water till thick then spoon into the bowl and add cold milk and sprinkle brown sugar on top.

You undo the sachet of Oatsosimple, put it in a bowl and add milk up to the marker on the paper sachet, then put in the micro for 2 minutes. Stir and add a tablespoon of cream.

LucentBlade · 05/11/2021 01:11

Half water half milk on the hob, small splash of cold milk and a teaspoon of honey.

Dixiechickonhols · 05/11/2021 01:15

Milk and 40g oats (slimming world healthy extra B amount!) in pan stir over low heat. Top with fruit.

2319inprogress · 05/11/2021 01:15

Milk, oats in pan stir over low heat until it stands the spoon add what you want when it's in your bowl, left overs have some honey added & left to be drawer porridge.

But for every morning it's oats & milk in a bowl & 3 mins in microwave Grin kids like to add chocolate spread or chocolate honey or honey plus cocoa- spot the theme!

steff13 · 05/11/2021 01:15

I just now realized when y'all say porridge you mean oatmeal. If I only have rolled oats, I make it on the stove with milk, then add butter and sugar after it's cooked.

I usually make steel-cut oats in the slow cooker. 2 C steel-cut oats, 8 C water, brown sugar, cinnamon, diced apples, cook on low for 8 hours.

Dixiechickonhols · 05/11/2021 01:15

I’m also enjoying the momo sachets of flavoured oats. Had apple, peanut and coconut so far.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 05/11/2021 01:16

My mother's version: tip Readybrek dust into a bowl, add boiling kettle water. Don't stir. Tip some cold milk over the top and some granulated sugar that's been sitting in the bag for a couple of years, flicking the bits with instant coffee drips off the top, slam it onto the kitchen table with a teaspoon.

My version (before Celiac diagnosis but after finding out that cows' milk had been a lifelong issue): put oats into saucepan, add water, stir over low heat until it goes creamy and thickens enough to leave a channel when you draw the handle of the wooden spoon across the pan. Put into a bowl, add crunchy peanut butter, maple syrup, ewes' milk yoghurt and pumpkin seeds.

DP's version: Oats and milk in bowl, in microwave, try to catch it just before it boils over. Add syrup.

I cook steel cut oats in the Instant Pot, then keep them in the fridge ready to heat up in the microwave in the morning.

I love the Aldi kavanagh’s oats.

Eileen101 · 05/11/2021 01:27

Oats in bowl, add milk (preferably oatly barista), put in microwave for 2 mins, transfer to cold bowl, add sliced banana or raisins (or for extra niceness, leftover mincemeat from making mince pies 😁).
I was surprised that people made it with water by choice.

RockinHorseShit · 05/11/2021 01:27

With added linseed & made with water, a bit of butter & salt tge proper way & topped with a little maple syrup

RockinHorseShit · 05/11/2021 01:28

Oh & cook for 2 min in the microwave

LostInTheColonies · 05/11/2021 01:28

Oats. Double the quantity of water (so 1/4 cup oats plus 1/2cup water, or 1/3 plus 2/3; always the same ratio), pinch of salt. Cook. Better on the hob cooked slowly. Let it cool a bit, and eat it. I don't like sugar or milk on it intensive porridge training on a Raleigh expedition where we didn't have milk of sugar

DD complains if she sees me preparing hers like this, so I usually put 1/3 cups oats / 1/3 cup water / 1/3 cup milk in hers, plus a pinch of salt. She adds cream and sometimes low-sugar maple syrup.

Porridge needs salt. Otherwise you might as well eat glue

ImUninsultable · 05/11/2021 01:29

Milk and oats boiled on the hob. Serve with salt and a little jug of cold milk.

larkstar · 05/11/2021 01:30

Cup of oats (we buy Sainsburys own Scottish ATM - we tried most others) , cup of water, about 1/4 cup of milk, a few twists of salt. Microwave for about 6mins on high (900W)

We have ours with wheatgerm, bran and well - I still add a bit of golden syrup - my wife adds all kinds of dried fruit or muesli.

larkstar · 05/11/2021 01:31

(gl)Oops 2 cups of water to 1 of porridge.

Bloodypunkrockers · 05/11/2021 01:37

Porridge oats in a bowl with milk. Microwave for 2 or 3 minutes.

Clean microwave

Add whatever fruit is lying about. Maybe a wee bit milk to cool

Gluten free oats are delicious. You can't beat a bowl of porridge in the morning

Bogeyes · 05/11/2021 01:41

Ask Ronnie Barker!

steff13 · 05/11/2021 01:47

Oh, my favorite grocery store has their brand of oatmeal packets they they call "fruit and cream variety pack." They have strawberries and cream, blueberries and cream, peaches and cream, and bananas and cream. The banana is so good.

Libertaire · 05/11/2021 01:49

I use bog-standard Waitrose porridge oats and 50/50 semi-skimmed milk & water. Blast in microwave for two mins, stir, one more min, stir, scoff topped with Demerara sugar plus whatever berries are lying around. Washed down with a large, strong mug of Yorkshire tea.

rubydoobydoo · 05/11/2021 01:50

45 grams of oats, a teaspoon each of chia seeds and flaxseed, 200ml skimmed milk or unsweetened almond milk - microwave for 2 and a half minutes and stir in 25g protein powder. Sometimes slice up a banana in after or add a handful of blueberries or blackcurrants.

ButterfliesAndDaffodils · 05/11/2021 02:08

Oats and water boiled on the hob until nice and thick. Pour into a bowl. Might throw in a handful of berries or chopped banana if I'm in the mood. Definitely no milk, butter or cream.

WeeTattieBogle · 05/11/2021 02:15

I cook the porridge in water and salt then serve with cold milk. There have been times though when I’ve cooked it in half milk half water before serving it with cold milk. I’m Scottish and it’s the way I had it when young.

If I want a concoction with cream and fruit and nuts I eat homemade Bircher Muesli and call it that.

OhLordyWhatNow · 05/11/2021 02:24

50g of rice flakes and buckwheat combined
200ml full fat milk

Combine and cook on hob for 4 mins. Top with Demerara sugar.
