Inspired by a comment on another thread.

How do you and your family make porridge? I was brought up to boil the oats (rolled oats preferably) with water till thick then spoon into the bowl and add cold milk and sprinkle brown sugar on top.

Oats and water in a bowl, stir, microwave for a short time - done!

gofg · 05/11/2021 02:53

Oh, you want the lot. Well, when cooked I put a bit of yoghurt on top, or blueberries in summer.

LAgeDeRaisin · 05/11/2021 03:10

2:1 water to oats, cook on hob til soft. Add salt, finish with cream.

TheOriginalEmu · 05/11/2021 03:21

GF Oats.
Milk
Frozen raspberries

Microwave for 3 mins. Mix. Eat.

AFS1 · 05/11/2021 03:35

@NeverDropYourMooncup
Are we related?! That’s almost exactly my experience of childhood porridge! I can still see the little pool of milk sitting on top of the Readybrek because it never got mixed in.

And your description of the sugar….I always had to check the dark specks were coffee granules, rather than mouse droppings…!

Fromage · 05/11/2021 04:31

@2319inprogress

Milk, oats in pan stir over low heat until it stands the spoon add what you want when it's in your bowl, left overs have some honey added & left to be drawer porridge.

But for every morning it's oats & milk in a bowl & 3 mins in microwave Grin kids like to add chocolate spread or chocolate honey or honey plus cocoa- spot the theme!

What the chuff is "drawer porridge" Confused

Third of a cup of oats to two thirds water, then heat slowly if cooking ( mostly have soaked oats) add cinnamon & apple or banana & sultanas, frozen mango & raspberries with desiccated coconut, grated carrot & apple with sultanas is like carrot cake especially if you add a touch of maple syrup

ivykaty44 · 05/11/2021 05:03

OhLordyWhatNow I like how buckwheat makes the texture more crunchy. I’ve not tried it with cooked oats only soaked them and added to soaked oats

Yusanaim · 05/11/2021 05:04

Large microwave bowl (as the portage boils) half cup porage oats to one cup water, sprinkling of salt, 4 mins microwave - done.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 05/11/2021 05:07

I use Aldi oats 0.49€ for 500g, they've just gone up from 35 cents), add full fat milk, microwave for 2.5 minutes.

I don't understand why people buy expensive sachets of oats or faff around with the hob for one serving (different if the whole family is eating porridge together for breakfast, then the hob is probably as quick). Cheap oats work in the microwave too.

I eat mine with plain quark (or greek yogurt if no plain quark) and marmalade by preference but I realise that's unconventional 😳 alternatively stewed apple and banana.

xksismybestletter · 05/11/2021 05:07

2 mins in the instant pot while we are getting dressed. No mess and it tastes gorgeous. I don't measure but I put a load more water in than oats and then a splash of non dairy milk (DC with allergy)

TomPinch · 05/11/2021 05:15

1 part oats to 3 parts water. Bring to boil until it thickens. Then add things like olive oil, sesame oil, soy sauce, chili oil, pickles, fish etc.

Basically Chinese rice porridge but with oats. I'm dead hip.

It’s not about speed, I cook on the hob as I have a tiny burner which cooks very slowly and it makes the oats very delicious and creamy texture. Which I like - I dislike the texture from cooking in the microwave.

Incidentally the small burner cooks scrambled eggs particularly well as it cooks so slowly and doesn’t dry the eggs out.

Saltpepperbutter · 05/11/2021 05:43

I much prefer porridge made only with water. Fact: water gives the oats a creamier texture.

Bring to boil stirring constantly to ensure no lumps. Simmer until cooked. Add a pinch of salt. Serve with milk, or better still, cream.

I am Scottish and this is how I grew up with it. My mother also believed in eating it standing up, but I don’t go that far. I have tried milky, sweet porridge but it’s just not as delicious.

MilkywayMonarch22 · 05/11/2021 05:46

Oats with Oat milk, and medjool dates chopped in. Cinnamon and brown sugar. Cooked very slowly until dates melted in. Very comforting

MilkywayMonarch22 · 05/11/2021 05:47

@steff13 this sounds gorgeous! Definitely trying it your way

Anycrispsleft · 05/11/2021 05:48

@WeeTattieBogle

I cook the porridge in water and salt then serve with cold milk. There have been times though when I’ve cooked it in half milk half water before serving it with cold milk. I’m Scottish and it’s the way I had it when young.

If I want a concoction with cream and fruit and nuts I eat homemade Bircher Muesli and call it that.

I'm Scottish and when I ever cooked porridge for my dad he would be like "not the English way!" by which he meant, do the oats in water, not milk. "The English way" was shorthand off anything unnecessarily fussy or luxurious, like (heaven forfend) a jam sandwich with added butter Grin
UnLunDun · 05/11/2021 05:55

A handful of oats, enough water & milk (or just water if skint) till the oats float, microwave for 5 min. Kids like it with cinnamon. If cooking for more than one person, do it in a Tupperware in microwave and the washing up is simple. We have it daily.
Oh, for luxury porridge my DH likes it made with coconut milk but that’s about 10,000 calories of deliciousness. 😁

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 05/11/2021 06:01

Oats, water, pinch of salt.

If you are going to add fruit, sugar, honey, milk, cream, butter, god knows what else, you might as well just go and buy a box of breakfast cereal instead.

JumpLeadsForTwo · 05/11/2021 06:08

@LoveFall

I cook steel cut oats in the Instant Pot, then keep them in the fridge ready to heat up in the microwave in the morning.
Exactly what I do - once you've tried instant pot steel cut oats, no others will do! Add a bit of flax, few berries and small spoon of pnut butter
rrhuth · 05/11/2021 06:13

Oats, 50/50 water & milk, cook slowly, golden syrup at bottom of bowl, porridge on top

Going to make some today now Smile

We also sometimes add lots of flavours - stuff like cocoa, cinnamon, shredded coconut, dried fruits, fresh fruits. The kids used to make their flavours in the evening ready for the morning.

rrhuth · 05/11/2021 06:15

If you are going to add fruit, sugar, honey, milk, cream, butter, god knows what else, you might as well just go and buy a box of breakfast cereal instead. Nonsense. Oats remain a wholefood whatever you add to them. Oats + milk is nothing like a processed cereal.

There is no prize for puritanism.

Bluesheep8 · 05/11/2021 06:26
