Inspired by a comment on another thread.

How do you and your family make porridge? I was brought up to boil the oats (rolled oats preferably) with water till thick then spoon into the bowl and add cold milk and sprinkle brown sugar on top.

Oats and milk in bowl and microwave for 2-3 minutes. I like mine fairly runny. Sometimes add a bit of honey.

chatw0o0 · 05/11/2021 07:18

Two ways:
1 - 90 seconds in the microwave (packet oats) + add sliced banana and some peanut butter.
2 - Usually on a Sunday afternoon, toast cup of steel cut oats in a pan with a bit of butter, add three parts water and one part milk (usually non-cow to make a change), cook until thick/creamy. Bung in some currants at the end, and consume throughout week (with maybe a spoon of jam or just some sliced almonds for crunch).

@steff13

I just now realized when y'all say porridge you mean oatmeal. If I only have rolled oats, I make it on the stove with milk, then add butter and sugar after it's cooked.

I usually make steel-cut oats in the slow cooker. 2 C steel-cut oats, 8 C water, brown sugar, cinnamon, diced apples, cook on low for 8 hours.

@steff13 can I ask - do you cook it on low, high or auto for 8 hours? Trying to get into using my slow cooker more and your recipe sounds great but I'm pretty clueless about actually using the machine.

Ratio of 1 oats :1 milk : 1 water. I use measuring cups.
Add stuff like cinnamon and turmeric and green powders(though I've usually previously mixed these through the oats).
Add frozen fruit like cherries and/or goji berries.
Top with seeds and nuts.
Yum.

@XDownwiththissortofthingX

Oats, water, pinch of salt.

If you are going to add fruit, sugar, honey, milk, cream, butter, god knows what else, you might as well just go and buy a box of breakfast cereal instead.

Eh? A bowl of oats with fruit and honey added is far far from a box of breakfast cereal!

Summer oats and milk on hob to desired consistency- eat w banana/honey/topping of choice. Sometimes I just use cinnamon.
I much prefer it from hob than microwave.

longwayoff · 05/11/2021 07:21

Water, oats, microwave 1.5 minutes. Add more liquid for looser texture and any additions you fancy.

Pretty much like you. Love porridge, but really dislike it if it's made with cows milk. It's palatable made with non dairy milk, but water for the win.
Peace43 · 05/11/2021 07:24

I cook 30g of whole rolled oats on the hob with 100ml skimmed milk and a bit of water to slacken it off. I serve with a chopped piece of fruit. Banana this week. Also maybe a couple of chopped walnuts!

Brefugee · 05/11/2021 07:26

yeah, what's so special about steel cut?

they are rougher than rolled oats. I mix half and half to get a cross between a creamy and chewy consistency.

JumperandJacket · 05/11/2021 07:27

Depends how much time I have. In the week, rolled oats on the hob with milk (1:2), takes 10 mins, maybe a teaspoon of brown sugar and a splash of cold milk to serve.

Steel cut oats are better but take longer to cook.

NinetyNineRedBalloonsGoBy · 05/11/2021 07:28

Aldi Kavanagh organic jumbo oats
Milk to cover
Microwave 2 minutes
Add cream, almonds, blueberries, seed mix and 2 Brazil nuts

HomeTheatreSystem · 05/11/2021 07:32

I use jumbo oats soaked overnight in water then cooked on the hob with a touch of salt the next morning. It makes them very creamy so I don't miss the milk. I might also add some brown sugar.

DukkaDukka · 05/11/2021 07:32

Porridge in the bowl, add milk. Put in microwave for 2 minutes. Kids dollop chocolate spread in it.

DilemmaDelilah · 05/11/2021 07:35

Oats, then same volume milk and twice volume water. Pinch of salt. Bring to the boil in the microwave and then put on again on defrost for another 5 minutes. Serve with golden syrup or brown sugar.

cliffdiver · 05/11/2021 07:41

For DDs: 1 scoop of porridge to 2 scoops of whole milk. Microwave. Add honey and more milk when done.

For me: 1 scoop of porridge to 2 scoops of water. Microwave. Add salt when done.

PickupaPenguin8 · 05/11/2021 07:42

I use oats (organic) and water. Bring to the boil, let it simmer for four minutes. Add a pinch of Himalayan salt, cinnamon, flax seeds ground up, and fruit of choice, preferably blueberries and raspberries. I eat it with a dollop of Greek yoghurt and milk. No sugar.

LagneyandCasey · 05/11/2021 07:45

Skimmed milk heated in saucepan. Oats added until thickish then simmered for a few minutes until tge spoon stands up. Mix in a teaspoon of brown sugar and another one sprinkled on top. Sometimes have a dollop of jam or a couple of squares of dark chocolate mixed in 😋

TheQuest · 05/11/2021 07:46

I love porridge and make it on the job with coconut milk and water. I use a lot of liquid as I don’t like it thick and then there’s more of it.

Mia184 · 05/11/2021 07:48

40g rolled oats
100ml whole milk
100ml water
Simmer on the stove over low heat, put into bowl and add a table spoon of maple syrup

LilyE1234 · 05/11/2021 07:52

Rolled oats, chocolate oat milk and some berries/dollop of peanut butter on the top. Cooked on the hob. Delish.

passionfruitpizza · 05/11/2021 07:53

50g oats, 350g whole milk. Stir on hob on low heat for 10-20 min depending on how thick oats are cut and whether they're soaked first.

gogohm · 05/11/2021 07:59

50g oats, 100ml water, 100ml milk, microwave approx 3 mins, stir in 1 spoon brown sugar, some nutmeg and double cream (milk if no cream)!

PinkTonic · 05/11/2021 08:01

On the hob and with milk and a good pinch of salt. Serve with brown sugar for preference, fruit to be healthy.

OhGiveUp · 05/11/2021 08:09

I soak the oats in milk and sugar overnight and then cook them on the hob while stirring.
I add evaporated milk after serving to cool it.
