Inspired by a comment on another thread.

How do you and your family make porridge? I was brought up to boil the oats (rolled oats preferably) with water till thick then spoon into the bowl and add cold milk and sprinkle brown sugar on top.
@steff13 no we don't mean oatmeal when we talk about porridge!
I think what she means is, she means porridge when she talks about oatmeal 😉

Clearly you do, because that's what everyone is talking about. 🤷‍♀️

Tal45 · 05/11/2021 09:02

I use the smallest (American) cup I have - one of oats, two of water and one of milk. On the hob till it's boiling and thick. Have it every day.

AngeloMysterioso · 05/11/2021 09:02

Full fat milk, honey, cinnamon, raisins, and some chopped up Granny Smith apple at the end for crunch. Or blackberries and blueberries.

Etherealhedgehog · 05/11/2021 09:04

Half milk, half water and a pinch of salt. When I was a kid toppings were either jam or brown sugar, now it's more likely to be yoghurt + honey + fruit.

Tal45 · 05/11/2021 09:06

Oh also add in some cinnamon, ginger and tumeric and some frozen fruit, banana and seeds.

justtheonedc · 05/11/2021 09:06

Ramekin of oats (Aldi jumbo organic)
Ramekin of oat milk, and one of water
Into a 2litre jug
Microwave at 700w for 5 minutes

Mash banana in bowl
Add frozen blueberries
Pour over cooked porridge
Leave for a minute and stir

Etherealhedgehog · 05/11/2021 09:08

Oh and just noticed a pp mentioned chocolate almond butter - can confirm that chocolate almond butter with banana, yoghurt and honey is the porridge topping of the gods

MyCatEatsPrawnCrackers · 05/11/2021 09:12

In the microwave: 50g oats and 200ml skimmed milk. Cook on 800 for 2 mins. Stir. Cook for a further 1.5 minutes. Put a spoon of plain yoghurt on top and sprinkle with sweetener.

I do love a porridge thread. It’s fascinating how everyone has their own precise recipe, and there are always a few determined to denounce anyone who does it differently Grin

Oats + non dairy milk in microwave. Add turmeric, cinnamon and agave syrup.

cochineal7 · 05/11/2021 09:29

Milk water and oats in equal quantities (half cup per person). I add spoon of chia seeds and some linseed. Pumpkin seeds for some texture. Raisins if I feel like it. Love to also add a handful of frozen raspberries. Bit of maple syrup on top. It’s winter happiness in a bowl.

cochineal7 · 05/11/2021 09:30

I love the turmeric suggestion. Going to try tomorrow.

ditalini · 05/11/2021 09:33

I use a US measuring cup to put half a cup of oats in a bowl, 2 cups of water, pinch of salt.

2 minutes in the microwave, and then I add a handful of frozen blueberries, raspberries or the chopped fruit breakfast topper mix from Tesco and a sprinkling of cinnamon.

The frozen fruit defrosts in the hot porridge when mixed through and are small enough that the porridge stays hot.

ditalini · 05/11/2021 09:34

That should be 2 half cups of water - basically double water to oats.

I used to do one milk, one water but I ran out of milk one day and didn't really notice the difference.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/11/2021 09:38

For one portion, half a teacup of porridge to one cup of milk, bring to the boil, simmer just a few minutes.
Add cold milk, honey, Golden Syrup, fruit, whatever, as you like.
V simple and v cheap.

Pleasegodgotosleep · 05/11/2021 09:39

Butter, chopped apple, cinnamon, brown sugar. Cook on low until caramelised. Add cup of porridge and 3 cups milk. Cook slowly on hob until soft and creamy.

1 cup porridge, 3 cups milk, brown sugar, frozen mixed berries. Cook low until soft and creamy makes purple porridge.

As above without berries add toppings once cooked. Choc spread, peanut butter, jam, bananna etc.

whereislittleroo · 05/11/2021 09:45

Boil oats in a mix of half water/half milk (with a dash of cinnamon). Once in the bowl, add cold milk and either honey or a sprinkle of brown sugar plus whatever fruit I feel like (usually banana or blueberries).

SnowWhitesSM · 05/11/2021 09:47

I have 3 versions

Microwave one with cold milk and brown sugar or honey added in after. I also like a chopped banana in it, it reminds me of bananas and custard.

Hob version - water and oats, vanilla essence, milk or condensed milk to finish.

Cornmeal porridge - water, cornmeal, boil like fuck, add condensed milk, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla essence, sometimes rose water. I love cornmeal porridge the best Grin

Doomscrolling · 05/11/2021 09:48

@steff13 porridge is a breakfast dish usually made of rolled oats cooked in water (with or without milk) until creamy.
(Of course you can make a polenta porridge etc etc, but that’s not what we’re talking about here)

Oatmeal is a dry ingredient of ground oats can be made into a myriad of things.

Americans call oatmeal porridge. God knows what they call the dry ingredient we call oatmeal.

beguilingeyes · 05/11/2021 09:48

Depends how much time I've got. If I'm in a hurry it's Oatso Simple, usually the cinnamon one. If I've got loads of time it's Macrooms (sp?) steel cut oats cooked slowly and then raisins, cinnamon and honey.

ProcrastinationIsMySuperPower · 05/11/2021 10:01

Hob method: 40g oats per person, 250g liquid (usually half milk half water, but this varies according to who its for, more milk if kids, more water if me). Heat over a low heat, stiring, until thick and creamy. Poor into bowl, top as desired (brown sugar and milk, fruit, syrup etc).

Overnight in the slow cooker: 1 cup oats to 3 cups liquid (mix of milk and water as above) in a pudding basin. Stand the basin in the slow cooker and pour water round the outside. Wake up to yummy porridge; serve and top as desired!

WestendVBroadway · 05/11/2021 10:03

I put oats in a large soup mug. Add freshly boiled water and stir well to make thick paste. Top up with cold milk and microwave for 30 seconds, add a blob of peanut butter, stir well. Add sliced banana, bloody lush!

WindWash · 05/11/2021 10:05

I measure nothing, oats and oatmilk go in a pan on the hob more of either is added depending on if its too thick or too runny. Then frozen blackberries added and mushed in.
