To ask how you make porridge?

Inspired by a comment on another thread.

How do you and your family make porridge? I was brought up to boil the oats (rolled oats preferably) with water till thick then spoon into the bowl and add cold milk and sprinkle brown sugar on top.

steel cut oats only
in pressure cooker - 1 cup oats to 3.5 cups liquid (mix of milk and water), 14 minutes medium high pressure

ivykaty44 ah now that does explain using the hob! Thank you for that! I have a halogen hob and there's no obvious difference, so always wondered.

Still don't know why anyone buys individual sachets which cost more for 30g than 500g of oats, when you can microwave either exactly the same way though!

1/3 porridge oats, 2/3 milk, cooked slowly on a low heat on the hob. Stir from time to time.
Occasionally top with a splash of cream and a bit of maple syrup if feeling decadent

Oats, oat milk heated in the microwave for 3-4 minutes being careful it doesn't boil over. Add a teaspoon of peanut butter and a chopped banana.

One part oats to 2 parts milk (I have a small scoop that came with a packet of flahavans oats). On the hob, cook slowly on the small burner. Mash a banana and mix through when it's cooked.

That's for DC, if I'm having it I have water and no milk or banana, just a bit of salt.

Those who use steel cut rather than rolled oats, what's the difference?

Oats and whole milk. Bring to the boil and simmer for about five minutes. Add a pinch of salt (essential) and a sprinkle of Demerara sugar, plus toppings of choice. I like apples pan fried in a bit of butter & cinnamon with flakes almonds, chia seeds and pecans.

Oats and milk, cook on hob.
Add honey or sugar, sometimes fruit too. (This morning it is banana and honey!)
Or a dollop of jam for a special treat

One part jumbo oats two parts organic jumbo oats in Pyrex bowl into microwave on ‘low’ for 9 minutes. Shower. Stir and eat.

cup of mixed oats (rolled & steel cut) equal measure of oat milk (lactose intolerance, i used to use cow's milk) equal measure of water, bring to boil and turn down a bit until it reaches the required consistency. Which is exactly the time it takes me to make my standard cup of cappuccino & espresso in my bean-to-cup machine

i often add a dash of cream.

Steel cut oats, let soak in water fur a bit, add some salt, cool until creamy.

Add olive oil or some salted butter.

Oats and water on the hob. Add milk, yogurt or fruit after cooking. Leftover porridge into fridge, to make porridge pancakes for baby next day with added flour milk & egg.
Or, oats milk and maybe banana, pressed into loaf tin, bake in oven then slice into fingers for baby.

@Fromage. my Scottish granny (born in 1901). would make a massive pot of porridge. Cool, pour into a drawer lined with grease proof paper and then cut squares off in the week) drawer porridge.

Water and oats in a pan, leave the oats to soak for about 10 minutes, once soaked add some gur and cook until ready, if you want it thicker stir more. About 2-3 minutes before it is done add flaked almonds, cinnamon and nutmeg.

My mum makes it into mush in a pot with water then puts salt in top Angry

I make it in a microwave with oat milk then leave it to sit to go solid and pour more cold cold cold oat milk over the top and try to eat it quick enough to keep the correct ratio of warm wobbly porridge to cold milk on each spoonful.

I was at boarding school (late 70s) the cook made a vast vat of porridge on Monday (winter only) and portioned it into serving dishes for each table of 10 girls. Monday was too thick so we added a drop or two of milk. Tuesday required less milk. Wednesday was perfect, Thursday a bit thin, Friday thinner, Saturday was like oat soup made with milk. So presumably he just added more milk each day and made it last the week.

Oats with Oat milk, and medjool dates chopped in. Cinnamon and brown sugar. Cooked very slowly until dates melted in. Very comforting

I have something similar once a week, only I use water not oat milk, and put a little bit of butter and ginger in as well. My weekly treat.

Oats in a bowl, half water, half oat milk, blast in the meecrowarvey for 1 min 20 stir and do another one min 20. More milk if needed then add chia seeds, blueberries, walnuts, sunflower seeds, nutmeg, cinnamon and a bit of honey.

yeah, what's so special about steel cut?
my grits (roughly chopped oats) are supposedly steel cut.
