To ask how you make porridge?

Inspired by a comment on another thread.

How do you and your family make porridge? I was brought up to boil the oats (rolled oats preferably) with water till thick then spoon into the bowl and add cold milk and sprinkle brown sugar on top.

I measure Scott's porage oats, 2 measures milk.
1 minute 30 secs in microwave.

Imnotcrazyjustdrunk · 05/11/2021 20:45

Rolled oats.
For every 10 grams of oats add 50g of milk.
Slowly being to boil then simmer for 4-5 mins.
Pour into bowl, light sprinkling of brown sugar

Eat and enjoy

RosesAndHellebores · 05/11/2021 20:46

What's the difference between porridge and porrage please?

VanillaAndOrange · 05/11/2021 20:50

One part (by volume) oats to two parts milk (I prefer the taste of almond milk, although I'm not lactose intolerant). I have a small china cup, maybe meant to be a coffee cup, that works well for the quantities I want. Simmer until it looks ready - I've never timed it. Either golden syrup on top or grated apple added before heating it up, so the flavour is really well distributed. If using apple, maybe a few raisins and a pinch of mixed spice too.

Bywayofanupdate · 05/11/2021 20:51

Pan, oats and water then add honey and cinnamon

nordica · 05/11/2021 20:53

I grew up in Scandinavia and we made it with water and proper big, steel cut oats on the hob, with a pinch of salt. Then serve with a bit of butter that melts into the middle. I much prefer the slightly savoury edge to any sweet porridge.

I do either that, or sometimes the lazy version with the instant porridge made in the microwave to save on washing up. The Moma branded sachets are quite nice as they are not full of artificial flavours.

lovablequalities · 05/11/2021 20:54

1:2.5 oats to liquid. Usually a mixture of milk and water which horrifies my parents who are strict water only. Salt is essential. I cook mine in the instant pot for 8 minutes and then npr. My dad does his on the stove for a VERY LONG time.

Fifthtimelucky · 05/11/2021 20:56

Put oats (Flanahans) in bowl. Add water. Microwave. When cooked, stir and add whatever takes my fancy - eg blueberries and maple syrup.

When I was a child my mother used to put condensed milk or soft brown sugar and top of the milk on porridge. Delicious!

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 05/11/2021 21:15

If you ask my DS you add 2 Weetabix to a bowl, add cold milk and a fuckton of raison's and a light sprinkle of sugar.

He hates normal porridge

Lincslady53 · 05/11/2021 21:21

Oats, blueberries, cinnamon, dark brown sugar, and skimmed milk in a bowl. 2 mins 15 secs in microwave. Done and no sticky saucepan to wash. I use Kavanagh oats from Aldi. I have used more complicated ways. But have decided it is not worth the buggering about.

JumpLeadsForTwo · 05/11/2021 21:29
@JumpLeadsForTwo it's about a 250g pack of prunes to 10/12 tangerine/satsuma (or whatever is in the supermarket). Peel citrus and separate segments (chop some quite roughly), chop prunes into halves/quarters. Simmer in a pan until not too liquid - depending on how juicy the initial components were you might have to start with a small amount of water or orange juice. Taste, add sugar if the citrus component was a bit too acidic (often not necessary). Put in sterilised jars. Keep in fridge once opened.
@macshoto that sounds lovely- I'll give it a go. I love heated prunes/ stewed prunes and apples

TaraR2020 · 05/11/2021 21:38

Flanahans oats are perfect for making your own porridge pots to take to work - add a little powdered milk to them and then all you need to do is add freshly boiled water when you want to eat.
Healthier and cheaper than buying the instant porridge pots :)

elgreco · 05/11/2021 22:19

Flahavan's oats, water and heat. Frozen raspberries to cool and flavour.

Jerrysgonnabeacableboy · 05/11/2021 22:22

I love these ideas, but how do people do porridge in the microwave without it bubbling over and making a huge mess?

OP posts:
nanbread · 05/11/2021 22:30

Half porridge oats, half rolled oats

Twice quantity of liquid (usually half and half water and milk)

Add chopped dates, cinnamon, grated apple, almond butter

2319inprogress · 05/11/2021 22:30

Just use a bigger bowl Grin

ivykaty44 · 05/11/2021 22:46

Ain't nobody got time to be scraping porridge off a pan until Maundy Tuesday

if your scraping porridge of the pan, your not making it right

DdraigGoch · 05/11/2021 22:48

Pour some oats into a bowl. Add milk. Stir. Microwave. Add honey.

holidaynearlyover · 05/11/2021 22:49

I've just found these, great for a work day as they don't boil over in the microwave! Come with a handy scoop too!!!

Notimeforaname · 05/11/2021 23:02

I'm in bed, starving reading this. I just remembered I have ready brek downstairs that's probably out of date and I think I need it.

Annonnimoouse42 · 05/11/2021 23:15

I prefer medium oatmeal to rolled oats. Cook in water on hob & add plenty of salt. Sometimes add a mashed banana when cooked.
Have made in slow cooker and it's really good

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 05/11/2021 23:24

@Libertaire

I use bog-standard Waitrose porridge oats and 50/50 semi-skimmed milk & water. Blast in microwave for two mins, stir, one more min, stir, scoff topped with Demerara sugar plus whatever berries are lying around. Washed down with a large, strong mug of Yorkshire tea.
Same as me... I just add fake sugar and sometimes banana /maple syrup
OhLordyWhatNow · 06/11/2021 01:08

"OhLordyWhatNow oats are nutritionally better than rice though, plus most people eat rice at other times, such as with vegetables/ curry but don't eat porridge at other times. I'm not sure why anyone would choose to make a porridge out of rice if they had oats."

@UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme

Perhaps because different people have different dietary needs?

Not everyone can eat oats 🙄

OhLordyWhatNow · 06/11/2021 01:39

Just checked and compared the nutritional value of oats and whole grain rice flakes.

There's barely any difference between the two nutritionally, each contain broadly similar fibre, protein, B vitamins, and minerals. Whole grain rice has higher proportion of carbohydrates compared to oats but the rice is higher in magnesium and manganese both of which help with blood pressure and blood sugar regulation.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 06/11/2021 01:59

Oats, water, splash of maple syrup maybe a banana
