Inspired by a comment on another thread.

How do you and your family make porridge? I was brought up to boil the oats (rolled oats preferably) with water till thick then spoon into the bowl and add cold milk and sprinkle brown sugar on top.

I love these ideas, but how do people do porridge in the microwave without it bubbling over and making a huge mess?
It needs to be ‘slow and low’. I posted earlier- Pyrex bowl or jug. 9 minutes on low setting works perfectly for me , after a lot of eruptions 🌋

Weigh 50g porridge into bowl, add almond milk til the scales say 235g. Microwave for 3 mins on full. Stir. Top with delicious things. Eat

KimchiJjigae · 06/11/2021 08:50

Who else had porridge for breakfast this morning? 😋

Rolled oats, whole milk, pinch of salt, saucepan, golden syrup, sprinkle of flaxseed and drizzle of peanut butter. Shared with toddler.

I change it up though, so don't have a recipe as such.

maddiemookins16mum · 06/11/2021 09:05

Scotts porridge oats, add cold water and salt 😊. Cook slowly. When done add cream off the top of the milk.

capercaillie · 06/11/2021 09:10

Rolled oats and oatmilk. Usually in microwave for speed although prefer on the hob. Currently love with raspberries and honey on top

@KimchiJjigae I want to know how you drizzle peanut butter!!! It's like playdoh 🤣
dorothygaleandtoto · 06/11/2021 11:56

One measure of oats, two measures of semi skimmed milk, pinch of salt. In the microwave for 4 minutes on 450w (half power). Stir, put back in microwave for 2 minutes on 450w.
Add a splash of milk to loosen, and a handful of fruit (I like a mix of banana and berries, or some mango). 😋

KimchiJjigae · 06/11/2021 12:04

@holidaynearlyover depends on the brand. The more whole food ones are naturally runny/oily but ones like Sunpat are more processed I think and therefore firmer.

I like the firmer ones to spread on toast and the runny ones for drizzling. Kind of like thick pancake batter type runny.

holidaynearlyover · 06/11/2021 12:06

@KimchiJjigae I only buy the ones with just peanuts in and mine are solid. I'm wondering if it's storage and air temperature 🤷🏼‍♀️

GrandTheftWalrus · 06/11/2021 12:07

I do it in the microwave with salt and water then put cold milk in when ready.

yikesanotherbooboo · 06/11/2021 12:19

Half a cup of oats and whole cup semi skimmed milk cooked on the hob.
When doing for DC I used to add a pinch of sugar or blob some honey in . Older DC puts in frozen raspberries or a spoon of peanut butter.
DM soaks over night in water then cooks on hob in the morning and lets down with full fat milk to eat, this is how we always had it as DC perhaps with some jam or golden syrup!
DGPs just had water to cook and a pinch of salt.

one of my earliest memories is being in hospital aged about 3 , on the tonsils ward, and they gave us porridge with white sugar

We were promised ice cream but they gave us cornflakes! The most painful meal ever.

Courtier · 06/11/2021 12:31

I use rolled oats with water in the microwave for two minutes then I add dark honey, flaked almonds, a bit of salt. Sometimes cherry jam or sour cream.

mouse70 · 06/11/2021 13:15

To Fromage
Drawer porridge. Batch cooking at its earliest!!!! Porridge made so thick it can be cut up from cold batch, stored in a drawer and cut and reheated each day, I assumed. Read Kidnapped, this was the first time I knew about it.

Coulddowithanap · 06/11/2021 13:33

45g porridge oats, add water to maybe a cm above the oats then microwave for 2 minutes. Only overflows when I use the work microwave as its a higher wattage than my home one. Really need to remember to reduce the power to save that happening.

Drop the power to 700w. Total game changer
TakeMe2Insanity · 04/12/2021 21:16

Inch of water in pan, add oats cook until nearly done then add milk and becomes super creamy.

hangrylady · 04/12/2021 21:21

2 mins in the microwave, job done.

DeepaBeesKit · 04/12/2021 21:32

Whole milk. 2 cups to 1 cup rolled oats.boil til thick, saucepan or microwave, but saucepan is a bit better tbh.

ThinWomansBrain · 04/12/2021 21:57

I hate the instant sachets!
Buy the largest, chunkiest oats you can find - I like Mornflake or Flahavens.
Before you go to bed, put about 30g of oats in cold water.
Sometimes I add a few sultanas, or a pinch of stevia, but the oats do develop a sweetness and milky creaminess over night.
In the morning, heat in the microwave. (works equally well on the hob, I'm lazy!)
Excluding the sultanas, I just calculated it works out at about 4p a serving.
This time of year I make batches of cranberry sauce, which is amazing on top.

ThinWomansBrain · 04/12/2021 22:00

mine never bubbles over - but because the oats don't need cooking, I'm only heating them - 40-50 seconds max.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 04/12/2021 22:11

I want to like porridge, I like the idea of it.

But the idea of oats cooked to mush makes me a bit so I’m afraid my recipe is:

1] make porridge by whatever method you fancy
2] put in the bin and eat absolutely anything else

RaginaPhalange · 04/12/2021 22:14

Oats cooked with milk then served with fruit or sugar with a wee bit of cold milk. My dh however makes it with water and salt which I think is horrid

lljkk · 04/12/2021 22:16

Not sure, actually. We just do. I didn't fiddle with the power setting.
Possibly because it's only wet enough, not high liquid content.

Kshhuxnxk · 04/12/2021 22:21

1 egg cup porridge to 3 of cold water, boil it up, put in bowl and pour cold milk over it and some salt.
