Inspired by a comment on another thread.

How do you and your family make porridge? I was brought up to boil the oats (rolled oats preferably) with water till thick then spoon into the bowl and add cold milk and sprinkle brown sugar on top.

1/3 oats, 2/3 water, pinch of salt, gently stirred to a simmer. Simmer for about 5 mins continuing to stir. Serve with a tablespoon or two of cream and a spoon of demerara sugar.

Used to love it before I met DH. DH recollects the grey lumpy gunge his mother dolloped into a bowl and can't stand it. DD will it eat once a flood so I don't bother buying it.

muddyford · 05/11/2021 08:11

For one: half a mug of porridge oats, half a mug of milk, half a mug of water, large pinch of salt. Microwave 2 minutes and stir, microwave another minute and stir again. Eat with golden syrup or Demerara sugar.

The microwave bowl needs to be much bigger than you'd think as the porridge goes volcanic!

At home: Equal quantities oats, whole milk, water, pinch of salt. Sometimes a large spoonful of ground flaxseed / linseed / berry mix. Cooked slowly on the hob until thick & creamy, stirring every now and again. Toppings - depends on what I have in & fancy on the day: spoonful of greek yoghurt & mixed seeds / flaked almonds / nut butter / double cream / berries / chopped banana / dates / jam / sometimes I'll make compote with frozen black forest / summer fruits and use this all week.

At work: 1 part oats, 1 part semi skimmed milk, 1 part water. In Sistema microwave porridge bowl, 2 minutes or so in microwave, stirring halfway & watch like a hawk so it doesn't boil over. Top with berries (usually frozen & thawed overnight). Much prefer them on the hob.

I laughed at the Ready Brek / sugar with coffee granules description above - reminiscent of breakfasts in our house growing up!

DP practically lived on Ready Brek when I first met him. My Mum gave us a box of it that she'd ended up with during the first lockdown & I'm pleased to say I've now educated his palate & he couldn't eat it - finally agreed it was like wallpaper paste Grin

Where are you all finding steel cut oats? I looked everywhere when I first got my instant pot but couldn't find any. I don't think I've ever tried them but would like to.

AdaColeman · 05/11/2021 08:12

Irish oats into a large jug, add water. Microwave for about three minutes. Spoon into a bowl, add a splash of milk. Eat!

SiobhanSharpe · 05/11/2021 08:12

I was a boarding school gel too, we would come down to breakfast and the porridge, made with water, would already have been ladled into individual shallow bowls, so it had 'set' into a warm wobbly disc.
You added cold milk and a sprinkle of sugar. That's how I like it even now.

ScoopyDoo · 05/11/2021 08:22

Large oats from scoop shop, semi-skimmed oat milk, frozen raspberries. On hob very low while I shower, increase heat gently till reaches walllpaper paste center consistency.

conflictednow · 05/11/2021 08:23

@Fromage drawer porridge - in ye olden days, at least in highland Scotland, cold cooked porridge would be put in a drawer in the wooden dresser and could have a slice cut off for lunch... for the rest of the week Smile

WakeUpLockie · 05/11/2021 08:25

For DS - oats, milk, microwave for like a minute, honey. So easy.

For me: frozen blueberries, same amount (by eye) of oats, boiling water, cook a few mins. Top with a square of 90% choc and almond butter. Sooooo luxurious!! Made with milk makes me run for the loo!

Purpletomato · 05/11/2021 08:25

Half a mug of oats, two thirds of a mug of water and cook slowly on the hob til thick. Tastes very creamy. Sometimes sprinkle sugar on it in the bowl.

FangsForTheMemory · 05/11/2021 08:27

Bring to the boil in the microwave then simmer for ten minutes, still in the microwave. You need to use a big bowl so it doesn’t climb out.

OP I make mine like yours, with water. It's the starch in the oats that make it creamy, not by using milk.

FangsForTheMemory · 05/11/2021 08:29

@LittleFriendSusan I think the people with steel cut oats are in the USA.

evilharpy · 05/11/2021 08:31

Jumbo oats in a bowl, add 1/2 milk 1/2 water and some shredded coconut. Microwave for 2 minutes. Add maple syrup and banana and sprinkle some flaked almonds over the top. Or sometimes apple and cinnamon, or sometimes golden syrup.

I've just discovered Aldi breakfast toppers which you just stir in from frozen, good if you're in a rush. They have a few different kinds, I had this one this morning.

WeAllHaveWings · 05/11/2021 08:31

Weigh out Scott's Porage Oats (their spelling!) and milk for 3 servings into a large bowl and put in fridge overnight.

Add pinch of salt and microwave for 3 minutes in morning.

While microwaving chop some fruit (usually bananas, or sometimes berries when in season). Stir into porridge when ready.

Put two portions into individual bowls. Stir into last portion one scoop of flavourless protein power for ds before putting into a bowl.

Serve topped with milk.

Love porridge, we eat it all year round, but on a cold morning you can't beat it for breakfast. We have tried with nuts/seeds but not keen, the fruit is enough to sweeten so we don't use sugar, but very occasionally have syrup/jam if our bananas are still green.

Notjustanymum · 05/11/2021 08:31

A cup of oats, and 1 cup of water and half a cup of milk in a pan on an induction hob, or a Bain-Marie on any other hob. Heat gently until boiling, stirring frequently, then dish up into bowls with choice of topping (golden syrup and top of the milk was my go-to as a child).

StCharlotte · 05/11/2021 08:37

As a diabetic porridge is great. The half a ton of dark brown sugar on top to make it remotely palatable not so much.

Anyway, from my B&B days:

One part porridge
One part milk
One part water
Microwave (or hob if I can be arsed)
No complaints

My dad was a water and salt man [bleagh].

StCharlotte · 05/11/2021 08:37

(I use an espresso cup for perfect measures)

Snoken · 05/11/2021 08:38

I do two parts milk, one part oat, one grated apple, lots of sweet cinnamon then I boil it for about 2-3 minutes. Pour it in a bowl, add some more cinnamon on top and sprinkle with sugar. It's delicious.

steff13 · 05/11/2021 08:41

Lils11 I cook it on low for 8 hours. I usually start it at about 10pm, then it's ready around 6am.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 05/11/2021 08:42

Porridge made with oat milk IS just oats & water and rapeseed oil ... Intrigued by a pp using oatly barista and being surprised that people just use oats and water...

I'm half milk half water, slowly stir till thick, golden syrup & maybe some fruit.

Babdoc · 05/11/2021 08:44

Stoats or Flahavans porridge oats, as they are the perfect proportions of jumbo and flaked oats. Two handfuls in a deep bowl with semi skimmed milk, microwave on max for 2 mins.
Add chopped fresh strawberries, and whole fresh bilberries and brambles. Microwave for further 1 minute 30 secs. Perfection!

Cosyblankets · 05/11/2021 08:49

To stop mine boiling over in the microwave I use a wider flatter bowl like a pasta bowl. Cup of oats, milk. 2 min micro. Stir. 1 min micro. Stir. 30 second micro. Never boils over.

Palavah · 05/11/2021 08:50

@steff13 no we don't mean oatmeal when we talk about porridge!

BigYellowHat · 05/11/2021 08:51

Always on the hob with milk only. Stirred constantly until it’s the right consistency. Then jam on top to taste or Nutella if I want to go wild 😂

viques · 05/11/2021 08:52

For one serving. One mug of water (one of the pretty little mugs that were an offer from a herbal tea company about 15 years ago) two scoops of proper oats using the old brown plastic tea strainer from Woolworths that is kept in the oats IKEA box. Saucepan, cook. Serve with syrup* and semi skimmed milk. If I don’t have the right mug and the tea strainer I can’t work out the proportions and it doesn’t taste right !

*And it has to be golden syrup, one of my earliest memories is being in hospital aged about 3 , on the tonsils ward, and they gave us porridge with white sugar. I burst into tears. It was bad enough they had put me in a baby cot not a big girls bed, but porridge with white sugar was the last straw.
