Do you take your wedding ring off?

In theory, I like the idea that he put it on me and it will always stay there, however also, I work as a primary teacher and my ring has diamonds in it so surely I’ll need to take it off to get the paint/glue/snot out properly?

I have to I have fibromyalgia and in a bad flare and my fingers swell up like sausages! I learned the hard way to take it off at the first sign of tightness for a few days

Whoopsies · 26/09/2021 12:04

I probably wear my less than I don't. I've never liked wearing rings. But I love my husband and am very happily married!

LadyPoison · 26/09/2021 12:13

I hardly ever wear mine.

Jewellery ( especially stone set) should be cleaned and inspected regularly. I cleaned a friends jewellery for her yesterday and it looks amazing. The colour of the water however was grim!

Haveyoubrushedyourteethtoday · 26/09/2021 12:15

I have mine cleaned regularly. It looks brand new every time.

thecatsthecats · 26/09/2021 12:20

I only wear mine about 50% of the time.

It can symbolise all it likes sitting in the jewellery box, not pinching my fingers at the gym or getting scuffed in the garden.

I know two "never take it off" women who took it off when they got divorced.

Do what you like, but it really doesn't make a difference to the state of your marriage.

Yes - it would do!

The settings pick up soap scum, dust. skin cells, food debris etc and normal hand washing doesn't really get rid of it unless it's a plain band. Any stones or engraving needs proper cleaning every so often to keep the sparkle

MummyJ12 · 26/09/2021 12:49

Very happily married and only wear mine when I’m out and about. Mine is a diamond band like yours OP. YANBU. I get dermatitis and swollen fingers so when I’m at home I never wear it. I don’t wear any jewellery at home. It doesn’t mean I love my DH any less or that I don’t want to be married, it just means I’m more comfortable.

ShushShushShush · 26/09/2021 12:56

Took it off when I was expecting DS1 and have only worn it occasionally since. He's almost 5. DH wears his 99%, of the time and feels bare without it.

Briarshollow · 26/09/2021 14:42

@Topseyt

Mine has been on my finger constantly since the day it was put on 28 years ago.

I wouldn't be able to get it off as my fingers are fatter now and have grown around it.

Like this? 😱

Getyourownback · 26/09/2021 14:55

@VenusTiger

No. Jeweller told me to NEVER take it off - I've painted rooms, gardened etc. and got it all covered in paint - comes off no problem and no chance of damaging it as it's the hardest stone there is.

Years ago, an elderly neighbour sat in the back of a taxi, took her precious rings off onto her lap to apply some hand cream - she got chatting away and forgot to put them back on - she got out of the taxi (the rings went with her) and she never saw them again.

I did remove it during last couple of months of pregnancy but it was kept in a safe place.

Why such obedience for your jeweller, @VenusTiger?!

What do people think will happen if they take them off? Obviously the risk of losing them goes up but I mean with regards to the sanctity of marriage…? There seems to be quite a few posters for whom the idea of taking them off is abhorrent. I don’t really understand it.

Daftasabroom · 26/09/2021 15:07

I do a lot of water based activities, cold water makes my hands shrink and my wedding ring just rattles around and feels like it's going to fall off. I know plenty of people who have lost rings so I take it off.

A bizarre story over the summer: somebody posts on a local FB page they lost a ring surfing. The NEXT DAY, two tides later, somebody finds it while duck diving through the surf.

FlyingPandas · 26/09/2021 15:16

I wear my wedding and engagement rings every day, take them off every night when I go to bed. I can’t wear them when I sleep because my fingers swell slightly when I’m warm and the tight feeling makes me really panicky.

Never understood the sentiment behind never taking wedding rings off, tbh. It doesn’t make you any more or less married!

The marriage would become invalid. Husband would disappear, people would start cheating left, right and center, the wife would forget she was ever married and the children may confuse their parents for their siblings.

Blossomtoes · 26/09/2021 16:28

Mine’s not been off my finger in 21 years. It’s just plain gold so there’s no need to take it off.

VeganVeal · 26/09/2021 16:31

I only take mine off on a girls night out

alwayswrighty · 26/09/2021 16:45

I take mine off if I'm doing anything related to the car or with tools. I worry I'll catch it somewhere and get my finger stuck.

LeanneBrownsLonelyBraincell · 26/09/2021 18:04

Only when baking bread

AuntyMabelandPippin · 26/09/2021 18:26

Mine never comes off, but it's a plain gold band. I take my engagement and eternity rings off when I'm baking or making claggy stuff. I don't wear them so much at the moment due to the amount of handwashing and antibacterial gel I'm using at work.

WetShirtScene · 26/09/2021 18:33

I never wear mine anymore. It's quite clunky and gets in the way of everything. Every time I wore it, it got caught on clothes or I ended up scratching myself somehow. But I do wear a simple mangalsutra (Indian wedding necklace) and I never take that off.

Antinerak · 26/09/2021 20:30

Mine stay on unless I'm doing cleaning with strong products or wearing latex gloves. I keep them on to shower, sleep, everything else. If i'm doing something involving glue or yucky sticky kids I leave them on, the stones clean up fine

dementedma · 26/09/2021 20:33

Havent worn mine in years. Dont even know where it is

VenusTiger · 27/09/2021 01:07

@StoneofDestiny @Getyourownback @BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand @Fluffypastelslippers

The jeweller is a friend - she came to our wedding - both she and my DH know how much the diamond cost and she told me never to take it off to do DIY/gardening - she didn't want me to lose it as she's had experience of that with customers many times over the years. It wasn't an order, it was friendly advice.

I don't take mine off - it 'goes' with everything so I don't see the point.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 27/09/2021 01:43

I weirdly had a similar conversation like this thread last week while sailing. I was called ballsy for wearing my jewelry on a boat. Meh… if they can’t keep up with lifestyle then they aren’t for me.

I’m classic when it comes to jewelry; diamond stud earrings, 2 rings- diamond engagement princess cut +simple band and a birthstone ring channel cut and a birthstone necklace.

I subscribe to the jewelry is meant to be worn and in my life it needs to be durable. I do take my rings off to row on my rowing machine, mainly because it hurts otherwise after a time. But other than that it stays on for everything else.

I bought my goddaughter a pair of diamond studs (a starter set) for her 16th birthday and told her they were meant to be worn and put away for safekeeping. If she lost one to tell me and I’d replace it. I did make sure they had beefy backs to them 😉
