Do you take your wedding ring off?

In theory, I like the idea that he put it on me and it will always stay there, however also, I work as a primary teacher and my ring has diamonds in it so surely I’ll need to take it off to get the paint/glue/snot out properly?

Only when pregnant and my fingers swell I hate it though feels like something is missing for months can't wait to put them back on

PercyPiginaWig · 26/09/2021 00:05

I didn't realise that people didn't take them off!
I wear my wedding ring most days but don't like to wear anything in bed including jewellery.
I wouldn't wear any jewellery in the shower or for swimming or baking.
I actually have more than one, so I can wear the one I feel like wearing. I guess I see it more as a nice accessory. I don't wear my engagement ring often but if I do I don't wear my wedding ring with it, one ring per finger is enough for me.

I take mine off for doing skincare (don't want acids getting on them), if I'm climbing (the thought of degloving myself makes me want to vomit), if I'm washing up/gardening/anything messy or where it might get damaged like dismantling furniture, and if I'm swimming outdoors and would have no chance of finding them again if they came off.

I try and take it off to clean it properly occasionally, too.

I'm a bit precious about my engagement ring especially because it was a family ring from DH's side and he'd be gutted if anything ever happened to it. Not precious about it from a 'symbol of our love' perspective - I love it very much, but it is just a ring in that sense - but it means a lot to us both as it's one of the only nice and sentimental things we have of his family's.

BogRollBOGOF · 26/09/2021 00:53

Mine was off within 3 days for our honey moon which was not the luxurious resort type Grin
Also not worn for much of my pregnancies.
I can get dermatitis under my rings so have phases of wearing them or not as I heal.

My rings are quite simple for an active lifestyle but it's still more practical to take them off at times/ phases.

Sinthie · 26/09/2021 01:06

Yes - for the gym and sometime at night. Never even knew that this was a “thing”

GTAlogic · 26/09/2021 01:48

Dh & I only wear ours when we leave the house. At all other times they stay in their little box in the drawer.

fallfallfall · 26/09/2021 01:53

so so very rarely, generally only when working ground beef (making meatballs or hamburgers).
i don't believe i'd get the raw meat fully out of the claws.

Joystir59 · 26/09/2021 06:04

@notangelinajolie
No never ever. It's been there since the day he put it on. 30 years. TBH it's a size J and there isn't a hope in hell's chance of it ever coming off since it's practically ingrained. I used to think I was fat, how was I ever that tiny confused
This sounds painful!!

onelittlefrog · 26/09/2021 07:00

It's unhygeinic to never take it off at all. Also it could get damaged if you are doing certain things.

I once knew someone whose wedding ring was stuck on her hand and she couldn't physically remove it, so that's another reason to take it off every so often!

Getyourownback · 26/09/2021 07:37

I don’t ever wear mine. We’re still married but I just don’t really like any jewellery.

Mrstamborineman · 26/09/2021 07:38

Enjoy that feeling, I hope it lasts for you, for a long long time.

Getyourownback · 26/09/2021 07:39

Blows my mind that some people have never taken them off!

sakura06 · 26/09/2021 10:09

I took mine off when baby arrived 9 months later as I was always worried about catching her on it. I used to always wear my engagement ring in the day but when the pandemic hit, I took that off too due to all the hand washing and sanitising. I've never liked jewellery though. My DH lost his in the sea 😂

Heruka · 26/09/2021 11:30

The hygiene responses are the ones blowing my mind - why is it unhygienic? It gets washed inside and out with soap when hand washing!

TheGoogleMum · 26/09/2021 11:35

I take it off ar night and sometimes don't bother to put it on for the day!

Cheeseplantboots · 26/09/2021 11:40

I don’t wear it a night as my hands swell up. I mostly forget to put it back in the next day. The one I wear now is my third “upgrade”. My original wedding ring, I haven’t worn in about 20 years or my engagement ring.

Enko · 26/09/2021 11:41

Not really no I can recall feeling unnaturally naked when I'm labour with my 4 they insisted on them going off. However mine is a plain gold band

jarviscockatiel · 26/09/2021 11:44

I take mine off every night as I hate sleeping with jewellery on. Also take it off for showers/baths/swimming/pastry making/messy work etc. To be honest, it seems to be off more often than on my finger.

Floralnomad · 26/09/2021 11:46

We’ve been married for 30+ years , husband hasn’t worn his since 1990 and I developed severe contact dermatitis in 1999 during pregnancy and haven’t been able to wear a watch or any jewellery since . The rings live together in a box , I’m sure they are very happy as are we .

Rosebel · 26/09/2021 11:49

@Topseyt

Mine has been on my finger constantly since the day it was put on 28 years ago.

I wouldn't be able to get it off as my fingers are fatter now and have grown around it.

Isn't that a bit dangerous? My gran had to have hers cut off when that happened and then wore it on a chain round her neck.
MitheringMytryl · 26/09/2021 11:51

I take mine off for lifting weights and kneading dough. For everything else it stays on.

bananaboats · 26/09/2021 11:53

I wear my engagement and wedding rings if I'm going out somewhere unless it's the gym or something but that's it. Always take them off at night and if I'm cooking, showering etc.

Topseyt · 26/09/2021 11:54

@Rosebel Probably, but not much I can do about it at the moment.

I did have to have my engagement ring cut off in hospital when I had broken that arm. I'm hoping that it will resolve itself as I hopefully lose a bit more weight.

I won't be taking it off until or unless totally necessary though.

Lanique · 26/09/2021 11:58

All the time. It's a bit tight these days and my fingers swell at night. I hate the thought of it being stuck on so I remove it at night!

Mamamamasaurus · 26/09/2021 11:59

Only when I was pregnant and I swelled like a balloon, or when I sliced my hand open and needed surgery to fix it
