To be clear, I have never expected nor overly wanted one, but currently group of friends are in a baby boom and all six got push presents after the baby was born from their husbands and said it was the done thing, I’m just wondering aibu to think this is just an American thing or am I the one that isn’t up to speed on current trends(if so I’ll be requesting mine be backdated😂)

I have a laugh with dp about wanting a tummy tuck after dc2 is here but that's all it is is a laugh I'd never expect him to get me anything all I want is for him to be there for me when the baby comes. Push presents are a lot of nonsense imo

Dahlietta · 18/09/2021 16:35

I agree it’s the term that’s new, not the concept. The concept is, I think, quite old-fashioned!

@PeonyRose80

I didn’t get any after birth presents except a takeaway… I did get a homeschool teachers gift of a lush ring though, happy with that 🤪
ha ha yes I think I got a takeaway. I would have preferred a nice piece of art and I'm envious of people married to the kind of man who feels inclined to make such a gift to the mother of his child.
gibletjane · 18/09/2021 16:39

Thinking about it my push present money got spent on moving to a bigger house! 🤬

cattime · 18/09/2021 16:40

Any excuse for diamonds as far as I’m concerned. Can’t imagine why anyone would have an issue with that.

NCForthisxox · 18/09/2021 16:42

My OH got the midwife a box of chocolates ( I thought they were for me ) after my DD was born was fuming. I did most of the work no pain relief natural birth came in at 10cm so had done most of it at home.

Funnylittlefloozie · 18/09/2021 16:44

My sister and my best friend both got rather lovely jewellery from their husbands as "push presents".

I got fuck-all from my then-H. Not really surprising as he didn't bother with Christmas or birthday presents for me either.

Joevanswell · 18/09/2021 16:45

My present was Stilton, which I had craved all pregnancy but obviously couldn’t have.

That’s an excellent gift. My first take away was sushi.
Anonmousse · 18/09/2021 16:54

I got a watch. It wasnt unnecessary and I've worn it every day for nearly 12 years and dont plan on getting another one any time soon.

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 18/09/2021 16:57

@Polmuggle

It's an archaic and misogynistic practice, based on the premise that the woman has done her duty by serving her husband with an heir.

Seriously gross.

I've never heard of the expression "push present" but my husband bought me an eternity ring after we had our son. It was a Christmas present but rather more expensive than my usual Christmas presents.

I didn't think it was gross, it was a thank-you for having had nine months of pregnancy when he had the easy bit to do!

Love this :) I had champagne and tiramisu waiting for me when I got home from hospital!
Strokethefurrywall · 18/09/2021 17:00

It’s always been a thing but only recently has the disgusting term “push present” been uttered.

My parents have been married 48 years and my dad got my mum gifts when she had each of us in the late 70s. Nothing grand.

DH bought me a watch when I had DS1, and an eternity band with DS2. Not put on social media and not discussed with anyone else.

And frankly, given I’d grown and birthed two babies had a stitched up vagina, extreme after pains for the trouble, I bloody deserved them!

EmeraldShamrock · 18/09/2021 17:02

Never heard of it named a pish present, how weird.
I'm sure lots of husbands/partners buy a gift for the birth.
Mine didn't maternity leave was a serious budgeting time for us.

EmeraldShamrock · 18/09/2021 17:02

Pish 🤐🤣 push.

boringcreation · 18/09/2021 17:03

@SleepingBunnies21

Northern Irish and never heard of it/seen it.

The best "push present" I can think of would be a present, enthusiastic, committed, considerate co parent who pulls their weight through the early months craziness of new babies.

It's ok to have a present that isn't necessary and that you don't use everyday. You're even allowed two watches. You're more than worth the odd frivolous treat out of family money, you don't need to justify it. Flowers
PooWillyNameChange · 18/09/2021 17:08

I didn't get anything but my husband is a lovely man who pulls his weight and is currently doing all the night parenting, on top of working 60 hours a week, so I can rest as am pregnant again. So I can do without the jewellery.

Onesailwait · 18/09/2021 17:10

I'm in Canada. I got a large double double & a box of doughnuts from Timmys

earthyfire · 18/09/2021 17:18

Never heard of it

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/09/2021 17:18

10 years ago I got a dishwasher and an exercise bike. I found it funny. Friends with children were aghast. They all got jewellery of some sort.

Blondieg · 18/09/2021 17:20

Absolutely gross, push present?? Wtaf so if it ends up a c section, your a failure, no pressie. Your a person, not a fucking incubator

You definitely win.

I think it's too easy for lazy rich men to capitalise on their wives' competitive insecurities. "Did he buy you a piece of art?" or "did he buy you an eternity ring?".

Creamsoda77 · 18/09/2021 17:24

Push presents? Never heard of it, does it also apply if you have had a c section?

I love hearing these stories! Personal stories.
