to not own an iron?

FawnFrenchieMum · 12/09/2021 20:27

Just read a thread on whether to iron school shirts or not. I never iron school shirts or anything else for that matter.

We used to have an iron but very very rarely got used, DH decided to take it on holiday (no idea why, I don’t iron at home so not sure why he thought I would on holiday) and left it in a cupboard. I’ve never replaced it.

I hang stuff straight from washing & drying. Never looks creased. If something looks bad, stick it on and blast the hair dryer at it.

DH doesn’t wear shirt & tie to work, I may need to reconsider if he did.

Anyone else not iron?!
YABU - of course I iron!
YANBU - no need to iron, wash, hang & wear

I iron rarely. I might have a blitz on my husbands shirts when they build up but I avoid it wherever possible. I iron when I’m sewing as it’s easier to hem but otherwise I do very little.

I pay a lady every now and then about £20 to do the shirts. She does a better job than I ever could and it’s quick!

CecilyP · 12/09/2021 21:54

I don’t know how anyone gets away without ironing!!!! I spent 2.5 hours this afternoon ironing. Believe me, if it doesn’t need ironing then I don’t!!!

Unless you have 10 kids who like wearing linen shirts, you are definitely ironing things that don’t need it!

PurpleEchoLamp · 12/09/2021 21:56

There's not enough life to waste to ironing!

Cheeseplantboots · 12/09/2021 21:59

I’ve no idea how people get away without ironing. I can iron for 2 or 3 hours a week. I tumble and fold a lot of stuff but school stuff, polo shirts, blouses, dresses etc all need ironing. Also bedding 🤷🏼‍♀️ If I lived in joggers and jeans I’d have aloy less. My friend doesn’t own an iron and you can definitely tell!

NessieMcNessface · 12/09/2021 21:59

OK I know I’m weird but I quite enjoy ironing. I listen to talking books while I do it and find it relaxing. But, I only do what I feel I have to do; if I can get away with squashing and smoothing I do. It’s just my husband’s shirts and trousers really for work. He always offers to do it but I’m happy doing it and would much rather he did other jobs that I don’t like doing. I think younger people don’t iron as much nowadays and I say good for them! My grown up children certainly don’t iron, or iron as little as possible and they always look nice, as do their families. It’s a personal choice and I would never judge anyone for choosing not to iron.

Lenor crease release, it's brilliant!

I really don't have time to iron. Single mum with Two teens, 50 hours a week at work and a house to keep clean.

Life is too short to spend hours a week on a pointless task!

Mammyofonlyone · 12/09/2021 22:03

@User478

How do you do Hama beads?
My thoughts exactly. Ditto iron on name labels
mydogisthebest · 12/09/2021 22:07

I iron because as much as I hate it, I hate creased clothes more. Even when I tumble dry the clothes are creased.

Years ago my boss proudly told me "I never iron anything". I was really tempted to say "I can see that"

Kendodd · 12/09/2021 22:08

Ditto iron on name labels

Just get a fabric pan.

DeadButDelicious · 12/09/2021 22:11

I have one, but I only use it to block my crochet. Grin

espressotogo · 12/09/2021 22:11

Each to his own - I just feel happier when me and my family are all wearing nicely ironed clothes - it’s all about standards and pride in your appearance. If people judge me on that - zero fucks given. I can assure you it doesn’t have an adverse effect on my life ,

Knittingupastorm · 12/09/2021 22:19

Umm we have one, I think, somewhere. It was DH’s and he owned it before I knew him. I’ve certainly never used it.

BashfulClam · 12/09/2021 22:26

I have never looked at other people and noticed of their clothes are ironed or not. Why do you iron bedding? Who sees it, when I was selling my house I just ironed the actual bed so the duvet was smooth.

fidgetmad · 12/09/2021 22:28

I'd love to not iron!! What's the secret for T-shirt's etc ? If you tumble dry them do they not shrink?

Would love some tips as this could be life changing!!

tellittomyhead · 12/09/2021 22:31

@SylvanasWindrunner

I assumed that person who said they ironed twice a day and four hours at the weekend was joking. Please come back and confirm. I am worried for your well-being!
I was joking yes.
catwithflowers · 12/09/2021 22:32

YANBU if you hate ironing. I find it really relaxing and love sleeping in freshly ironed bed linen. A new iron was on my Christmas list a few years ago 😂. I wouldn't judge someone for not ironing but couldn't imagine not doing it myself! Maybe it's a generational thing. I'm mid fifties.

To each their own 😊

Tulips15 · 12/09/2021 22:34

Havent owned an iron for approx 10years!
Genuinely, the dog chewed th cable and I just never bought one again!

EmeraldShamrock · 12/09/2021 22:34

I ust feel happier when me and my family are all wearing nicely ironed clothes - it’s all about standards and pride in your appearance.
That is fine if it works for you.

If people judge me on that - zero fucks given. I can assure you it doesn’t have an adverse effect on my life.

I don't think anyone is judging you just like you weren't judging the non ironing pps.
Well maybe you did with the standard and pride comments.
I iron if going somewhere nice otherwise my DC wear clothing that don't need ironing.
Trust me we're clean proud and have standards.

Anordinarymum · 12/09/2021 22:37

I own an iron and wish to God I did not :)

FawnFrenchieMum · 12/09/2021 22:37

Hama beads are the work of the devil so no concerns there!
And for mane labels, thankfully DC have a lovely grandma (AKA my DM) who loves to sew. She spends her spare time knitting and sewing so loves a good uniform naming session.

My kids uniforms always look smart, maybe I just buy the ones that stay looking good without ironing and I can’t say DS ever asked for a crease in the front of his trousers. He’s at college now where it’s jeans every day anyway.

I defiantly don’t live in joggers, I don’t even own a pair. I work in an office and have never had anyone comment on my ‘creased’ clothes.

Just don't iron things?
BashfulClam · 12/09/2021 22:39

My mum is a suave to ironing despite hating it. She sieves ages each week ironing and putting things in hangers. She ruined so many of my clothes with incorrect washing and ironing even though I said I’d do my own washing when I lived at home. She always says ‘oh since you moved out I have so much less ironing!’ but I pleaded with her not to as she ruined so many things. She used to Iron everything for her and my dad before packing it for a holiday then take a travel iron as inevitably everything was creased after being packed three days in advance and travelling to Spain or Greece etc.

The biggest tip i can give you is to ask yourself why it matters.

If you wear a creased T-Shirt from the drawer or if you wear an ironed t-shirt. You're still wearing a t-shirt. You won't get arrested or stared at cause your breasts are flopping all over the place. So what real world difference does it make?

After a short time the t-shirt is creased anyway just from wearing it.or wearing a jacket etc.

Dearreader · 12/09/2021 22:41

I used to spend every Sunday night taking it in turns with my husband to iron everything for hours. We then paid an amazing person who would collect the ironing and bring it all back the next day, beautifully ironed. Since covid I have taken to either hanging things up to dry or tumble drying them and catching them at the right time to hang up. I never iron nowadays but my husband will occasionally if he needs a work shirt.

marioduck · 12/09/2021 22:42

How do you manage to wear clothes without them becoming creased? Do you just stand frozen in a pose all day?
