to not own an iron?

FawnFrenchieMum · 12/09/2021 20:27

Just read a thread on whether to iron school shirts or not. I never iron school shirts or anything else for that matter.

We used to have an iron but very very rarely got used, DH decided to take it on holiday (no idea why, I don’t iron at home so not sure why he thought I would on holiday) and left it in a cupboard. I’ve never replaced it.

I hang stuff straight from washing & drying. Never looks creased. If something looks bad, stick it on and blast the hair dryer at it.

DH doesn’t wear shirt & tie to work, I may need to reconsider if he did.

Anyone else not iron?!
YABU - of course I iron!
YANBU - no need to iron, wash, hang & wear

I own one but have only ever used it for craft purposes. And once to iron dh a shirt for a wedding.
No-one has ever commented on me looking creased (in honesty I'm not sure I'd care if they did).
Ironing always seems to be such an odd thing to do and such a huge waste of time.

UnsuitableHat · 12/09/2021 20:32

I never iron. I live alone tho so perhaps that makes it more straightforward! I don’t really buy anything that needs ironing. I do own one but it should probably be condemned by now.

PalmarisLongus · 12/09/2021 20:34

I was bought one for Xmas once by mil who noted I didn't own one.
I returned it to her for her birthday 4 months later, she was offended, I reminded her I was offended that she thought I would want one in the first place.
I have no problems offending those who have no issues offending me. Grin

I haven't ironed a single item in my 42 years of life and have no intention of starting anytime soon.

SpringRainbow · 12/09/2021 20:34

We have an iron, somewhere.

I have no idea where it is or if it even works.

I hate ironing.

My husband used to iron when he had a job that meant he wore proper shirts, but he has since left that job.

So, despite having 2 kids it’s been years since we have ironed anything.

User478 · 12/09/2021 20:34

How do you do Hama beads?

EatYourVegetables · 12/09/2021 20:35

If you have a drier and take things straight out, and if no one in the house regularly wears clothes that really need ironing (such as men’s suit shirts), then do- not- iron.

In those circumstances ironing is unnecessary martyrdom, a total waste of time and electricity, and another way to keep women chained to the house.

If your DH did wear those thin shirts regularly, I’d say let him iron them Grin

When dh and I were going to my grandmas funeral a few years back, dd2 (who must have been about 10) asked "what's that funny long table for?".

One of my better parenting moments!

Since them I've taught them all to iron a shirt, cos I'm not doing it!

Tlollj · 12/09/2021 20:39

I only iron things that need it. Not flannels and socks like some.
I haven’t got a tumble dryer so I don’t know if that makes a difference.

RandomMess · 12/09/2021 20:54

YANBU unless you have young DC as it's a requirement for Hama beads and iron on name tapes!

Annoyedanddissapointed · 12/09/2021 20:56

I threw away my iron recently because it was rusty from the lavk of use. Ahking the clothes properly before hanging is a good arms workout😁
I don't have to worry about uniforms tho

I applaud your strength
GreenCat44 · 12/09/2021 20:59

I threw my iron out because I never used it but have been known to iron things with the hair straighteners if needed (obviously just collars and belts and stuff, not clothes Grin)

I don’t know how anyone gets away without ironing!!!! I spent 2.5 hours this afternoon ironing. Believe me, if it doesn’t need ironing then I don’t!!!

CatsOperatingInGangs · 12/09/2021 20:59

I don’t iron.
We have one somewhere but can’t remember the last time it was used.
Took the ironing board to the tip years ago.

You're meant to empty the iron of water after every use.

You're definitely ironing things that don't need it!
RandomMess · 12/09/2021 21:03

@weegiemum same here when we took ours to sell at a car boot sale 🤣

Blinkingheckythump · 12/09/2021 21:03

I have an iron which until recently was pretty much only used for crafting and shirts. But it's now used for school uniform too. I should imagine it won't take long til I give up on that though.

scully29 · 12/09/2021 21:04

We have no iron.

EmeraldShamrock · 12/09/2021 21:09

I only iron the school uniforms and DP's shirt/trousers for work.
I avoid clothes that need ironing but most can't go in the dryer so it is extra work hanging them out then airing.
School uniforms look shit without ironing. I always pity DC in crinkled uniforms it's my own issue I hated going to school with wrinkly clothes being a scruffy looking kid, you stood out against the pristine DC.

FlumpsAreShit · 12/09/2021 21:09

We have one. DD does her school shirts and DH does his shirt when he has a wedding or an important meeting. I never use the thing.

tellittomyhead · 12/09/2021 21:11

I use my iron about twice a day and also spend about 4 hours out of my weekend ironing all my clothes and bedding. I find those who don't bother to be very lazy - and common.

ComtesseDeSpair · 12/09/2021 21:12

I’ve never owned one. I just make sure that everything I wear doesn’t need ironing - and people compliment me on how I’m dressed most days so I can’t be doing it all wrong. DP has an iron and ironing board which he insisted on bringing with him when we moved in together. Neither have moved from their spot in the cupboard in over a year.

wedwewerpink · 12/09/2021 21:12

I find it odd when I hear people 'say I don't own an iron and my clothes look fine', no...no they don't! You can definitely tell (well I can)!
