to not own an iron?

FawnFrenchieMum · 12/09/2021 20:27

Just read a thread on whether to iron school shirts or not. I never iron school shirts or anything else for that matter.

We used to have an iron but very very rarely got used, DH decided to take it on holiday (no idea why, I don’t iron at home so not sure why he thought I would on holiday) and left it in a cupboard. I’ve never replaced it.

I hang stuff straight from washing & drying. Never looks creased. If something looks bad, stick it on and blast the hair dryer at it.

DH doesn’t wear shirt & tie to work, I may need to reconsider if he did.

Anyone else not iron?!
YABU - of course I iron!
YANBU - no need to iron, wash, hang & wear

Never iron, don’t have a tumble drier either. I have better things to go than ironing.

Ours is still in the box from when we moved. Four years ago Grin

MereDintofPandiculation · 12/09/2021 21:23

@GreenCat44

I threw my iron out because I never used it but have been known to iron things with the hair straighteners if needed (obviously just collars and belts and stuff, not clothes Grin)
And I know someone who used to straighten her hair with an iron

I use my iron about twice a day and also spend about 4 hours out of my weekend ironing all my clothes and bedding. I find those who don't bother to be very lazy - and common.
I take that as a compliment.

It's usually the prissy uptight look down their nose and judge other people that throw around the word common.

People so worried that other peoples clothes are creased must have fucking nice lives if they have such little else of import to concern themselves with.

DontPeeInThePlayHouse · 12/09/2021 21:26

I wear a lot of casual shirts daily so I do iron, I also iron uniform and any clothes for formal occasions. If I can get away without ironing I will though. But I can't stand looking scruffy in clothes even if I look like shit in my skin.

Definitely me! I use all those spare hours I save from not ironing to drink White Lightning and sleep.

I did have to iron when we had a shit washing machine and no tumble drier and it was awful. But now there's absolutely no need. Neither of us wear shirts or formal trousers, and everything comes out of the drier uncreased and gets put away.

NorthernDramaLlama · 12/09/2021 21:30

I iron once a week for about 20 minutes. DD's polo shirts and the occasional thing for me. Once or twice a year my mate comes over and she uses it to iron a 'going out out' outfit. I shake and dry stuff well.

espressotogo · 12/09/2021 21:31

I literally don’t know anyone in real life who does not own and regularly use an iron , how do you get creases in school trousers without them ? I think it’s slovenly not to iron at all and trust me - people do notice - they’re just too polite to comment

Kendodd · 12/09/2021 21:36

I don't iron. Load of rubbish, outdated skill.

I have heard ironed sheets are lovely to sleep on though. I'll have to stay in a hotel to find out though.

I don’t have boys so no school trousers.
RandomMess · 12/09/2021 21:37

It mainly started for me as our house was too small and too open plan post DC to have N ironing pile plus it aggravated my upper back issues.

Oh no... Too polite to comment!!

Whatever will I do?

Oh that's it.. not give a fuck.
And if they did comment, well... I have no issue offending people who have no issue offending me.

Why do creases matter?

In what way does any item of clothing need ironing? Why?

I wish people would pause to consider that occasionally before going off on one calling people "lazy" for being smart enough to recognise it is a totally ridiculous cultural concept.

Why is it lazy not to do something that is totally unnecessary?

I really dislike hotel or hospital bed sheets.
I take the bedding out of the drier warm straight on the bed.

Instead of spending 4 hours ironing bedding, why don’t you spend that time shagging in it? It might help you loosen up?
SylvanasWindrunner · 12/09/2021 21:42

I assumed that person who said they ironed twice a day and four hours at the weekend was joking. Please come back and confirm. I am worried for your well-being!

And other people notice the complete lack of critical thinking from people whose self-worth hinges on something as daft as ironing fabric.
grey12 · 12/09/2021 21:43

You need to check if you have any pieces of clothing that would need to be irnoned. You can either get them ironed at a drycleaners or maybe gee a travel iron for just in case

EmeraldShamrock · 12/09/2021 21:45

@tellittomyhead Wow.
Do you enjoy ironing? My Dsis loves ironing watching netflix she finds it relaxing. 😌
Calling people common for not ironing is very rude.

I don’t have kids so don’t have school uniforms to iron And I am sure they notice I don’t wear make up, have manicures or get my hair dyed but I give as few fucks about those things as I do ironing. I don’t look creased and even if I do I wouldn’t care. I don’t care if other people are creased either. Life is too short. Do things that make you happy. If ironing brings you joy then go ahead. If not then maybe nap. Go for a walk. Do whatever is the best use of that hour of your life
Recessed · 12/09/2021 21:47

I have an iron but it's probably been used about 5 times in 5 years - if that.

I tumble dry practically everything (unless really delicate/expensive) and if you take out and hang/fold straight away then there's no creases so no need to iron. So YANBU but it's handy to have if you have clothes that really need ironing like a linen shirt or something - which is the last item I used the iron for, I wouldn't have been able to wear it otherwise.

It's paranoia.

They notice creases and think badly of the person, in their heads they'll call them bad names and generally judge them. So they expect everyone else to be the same and be looking at their creases and thinking badly of them.

I don't notice creases in others, I doubt anyone notices the creases in my clothes, too distracted by the creases and wrinkles in my rapidly aging face.. probably...

luckylavender · 12/09/2021 21:49

@marioduck - it's personal preference / standards isn't it? Neither view is right or wrong so throwing about insults is pointless. Both opinions are equally as judgemental.

galacticpixels · 12/09/2021 21:51

My mother never ironed (except for shirts for weddings etc) and I'm the same.

DP and I bought an iron when we moved in together because it seemed like something we should do but it's only been used a handful of times. I think my clothes look fine but I also don't really care if my t-shirts have a wrinkle or two. 🤷‍♀️

Well considering 61% agree with the OP I can't imagine your face everytime you walk down the street surrounded by the slovenly masses.
