to not own an iron?

Just read a thread on whether to iron school shirts or not. I never iron school shirts or anything else for that matter.

We used to have an iron but very very rarely got used, DH decided to take it on holiday (no idea why, I don’t iron at home so not sure why he thought I would on holiday) and left it in a cupboard. I’ve never replaced it.

I hang stuff straight from washing & drying. Never looks creased. If something looks bad, stick it on and blast the hair dryer at it.

DH doesn’t wear shirt & tie to work, I may need to reconsider if he did.

Anyone else not iron?!
YABU - of course I iron!
YANBU - no need to iron, wash, hang & wear

I'd love to not iron!! What's the secret for T-shirt's etc ? If you tumble dry them do they not shrink?
I dry them outside on the line, then preheat my drier throw them in for 4 minutes shake and hang. Not perfect but okay.

StoneofDestiny · 12/09/2021 22:49

Can't imagine not ironing. Both of us wear suits to work with shirts/blouses that need ironing. When not at work my dresses need ironing and his shirts/Polo Shirts would look awful uniformed. Always sent kids to school in ironed shirts and trousers. It's not a big deal - I do it while watching TV. And I do iron bedding - just my standard of how I want to live.
Each to their own.

Marie kondo's folding methods help too.

winewolfhowls · 12/09/2021 22:50

I work in a job where you traditionally have to look smart, noone irons, or at least they say they don't. It does look like some of the men must though from their apprentice style outfits and shirts.
I think there has been a definite rise in people being able to buy, and consciously choosing fabrics that look OK without an iron. Id never buy linen!
I think if someone told me they spent a couple of hours ironing a week i would think they were time rich.

@tellittomyhead Whew, I thought it was a cry for help Grin

NanooCov · 12/09/2021 22:54

I have one but it's been used no more than a handful of times in the last 6 years, for DH to iron a shirt to go to a funeral or wedding. Oh and I once used it for craft purposes for a world book day costume (puffy fabric paint).

Floralnomad · 12/09/2021 22:57

I don’t own an iron but anything that needs ironing goes to the ironing service .

BashfulClam · 12/09/2021 23:01

My gran Ironed everything, even underwear. I asked why bother ironing pants, your bum irons them and no one sees them. She looked horrified, ‘what if you are wearing a skirt and you fall over and your oaths show and they are creased? Or the wind lifts your skirt?’ I have never fallen and flashed my knickers and I dint think anyone would be staring at you if you fell over with your skirt up
thinking ‘jeez her scants are really creased!’

Lahhdjdknwbjshdhb · 12/09/2021 23:01

I never iron. Don’t need to - I have a Miele washer dryer and it’s fabulous at removing creases (has a no iron function). Think they’re £2k + new but totally worth it Wink

zigzag56445 · 12/09/2021 23:02

I own an iron. But only because about 17 years ago when I moved into my first house, I thought it was a thing I needed. Probably used it about 5 times ever.

billy1966 · 12/09/2021 23:02

So little ironed here.

Everything is folded immediately from the drier, school shirts hung immediately.

I shake and fold.

Also i call those in the house to come to the laundry room to collect their laudry and take it with them.

I find this handy as they put it away too.

bluewanda · 12/09/2021 23:03

Even when I tumble dry the clothes are creased.

Tumble drying makes things more creased, not less IME.

How do you manage to wear clothes without them becoming creased?

I think it’s down to the fabric. Certain fabrics just don’t crease.

My mother irons everything, including tea towels and pajamas. I haven't owned an iron in over ten years, I truly don't see the point. I wonder how many nice things we could have done together, mum and I, if she hadn't spent so many hours of my childhood ironing.

Oh dear. She probably thought she was being a good mum. And all that electricity as well:)
RampantIvy · 12/09/2021 23:27

I iron Grin
I own some linen clothes that need ironing. I also own other clothes that look better when ironed.

It is something I don't mind doing as I watch TV while doing it.

Recessed · 12/09/2021 23:30

I can't believe people iron bedding. Completely fine if you enjoy the process and ironing is your hobby Grin but if you don't enjoy it, then what a waste of life! Just take it from the dryer before it's cooled and put it straight on the bed and there's no creases, but even if there were a few why on earth would it matter? So odd.

TurnTheShipAround · 12/09/2021 23:31

Sorry, but I think you can always tell those people that don't iron........

Recessed · 12/09/2021 23:41

You really can't. Unless someone crumples their clothes into a ball and shoves them in a drawer after washing, or perhaps in a formal work environment as suits/shirts do tend to need it, but most other fabrics nowadays really do not need to be be ironed. My MIL always looks immaculate, really takes pride in her appearance and is so well put together - she doesn't iron and you would never ever know.

RubyJam · 12/09/2021 23:42

These threads always make me laugh - everyone I know irons their DC school uniforms

I iron my kids uniforms , also their weekend clothes , also if they are meeting friend they wear ironed clothes

I iron my uniform
I iron my DP work shirts and trousers

Genuinely don’t know anyone who doesn’t iron

Everyone I know irons at least something

Only in mumsnet there are these proud non ironers Grin

CreamFirstThenJamOnTop · 12/09/2021 23:43

We do own an iron but it only ever comes out when my husband is wearing a smart shirt, which is not often.

I hate ironing and never iron anything.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 12/09/2021 23:46

I've got an old iron somewhere but it's barely been touched.
My ex husband used to do all the ironing. Since we broke up a few years ago I haven't ironed anything. My DP did once iron me a shirt for work but he's given up ironing his clothes since he met me. We have better things to do with our time!

Embroidery · 13/09/2021 00:05

Irons sure are emotive!

Its just a domestic appliance. Ffs

My parents were very anti iron but liked to buy new clothes then wondered why the clothes never looked as good after they'd washed and not ironed them. I iron but rarely buy new clothes as my clothes stay nice.
My way is better for the environment

sleepylittlebunnies · 13/09/2021 02:35

I quite enjoy ironing on a Sunday evening watching TV, I find it relaxing. I always iron school uniforms as I like the kids to look smart for school. DH has polo shirt and combat trousers for work that don’t need ironing and my uniform is laundered at work. I iron bedding and most clothing. I don’t iron towels or underwear.

This with bells on!!

Whenever I see people walking around in crumpled clothes, I assume the clothes are clean, but they didn't have time to iron. Never even occurred to me that they didn't even own an iron?

allfurcoatnoknickers · 13/09/2021 03:45

I don't own an iron. I have a steamer, but I've never used it Blush.

Don't live in the UK, so if it needs ironing (linen, silk, dress shirts) it goes to the dry cleaner.
