to not own an iron?

Just read a thread on whether to iron school shirts or not. I never iron school shirts or anything else for that matter.

We used to have an iron but very very rarely got used, DH decided to take it on holiday (no idea why, I don’t iron at home so not sure why he thought I would on holiday) and left it in a cupboard. I’ve never replaced it.

I hang stuff straight from washing & drying. Never looks creased. If something looks bad, stick it on and blast the hair dryer at it.

DH doesn’t wear shirt & tie to work, I may need to reconsider if he did.

Anyone else not iron?!
YABU - of course I iron!
YANBU - no need to iron, wash, hang & wear

I only iron for weddings funerals and job interviews, and really don't give two hoots if anyone judges me. I do have a fancy Miele washing machine and tumble dryer though (like another poster above), and the No Iron functions is amazing. In fact if you empty the tumble dryer when the clothes are still warm, almost everything is crease free anyway.

Pikamoo · 13/09/2021 04:40

Our iron is still in its box. None of us have clothes that really need ironing as DH replaced all his shirts with the non-iron variety which are almost as good as being ironed as long as you don't tumble dry them to a crisp (if you do that you'll struggle to get the creases out even with an iron).

The last thing I tried to iron was a sofa cover because it was very creased after washing. I wasn't very successful with ironing it. Next time I'd send it to a professional who has a much better iron than I do. I used to work in a dry cleaners and god I miss the irons/boards there. If I could have an iron and board like that then I'd iron everything 😂

MajorNeville · 13/09/2021 05:07

@catwithflowers I'm mid 50's, I haven't ironed in years, I don't know anyone who irons regularly, so not generational. If it needs ironing I don't buy it.

gofg · 13/09/2021 05:53

I iron - just me in the house - and what's more, I rather ENJOY doing it Blush

gofg · 13/09/2021 05:55

Forgot to say - I would rather iron all day than do any other form of housework!

Why is the assumption that he took it on holiday for you to use and not himself?

To the question, yes we own an iron. I have not used it for years, as I buy things that don’t need ironing, my work wear for example tends to be dresses but never blouses or shirts. DH irons shirts although he has just had eighteen months off that but he is back to ironing now. I don’t have children, but I really can’t imagine getting away without ironing uniforms, especially blouses and shirts.

@fidgetmad

I'd love to not iron!! What's the secret for T-shirt's etc ? If you tumble dry them do they not shrink?

Would love some tips as this could be life changing!!

Take your clothes out of the tumble dryer as soon as it’s finished and hang the clothes up. If you wait even a couple of min after the tumble dryer has finished they fall to the bottom and get crumpled. My clothes never shrink
whiteroseredrose · 13/09/2021 06:20

DH irons shirts for work (formative years at army cadets!). DM has fancy 100% cotton sheets that get very creased so she irons them.

Most modern fabrics have been developed not to need ironing so much though, so now it not as necessary.

I empty my washer as soon as it finishes, give everything a shake before hanging out and fold carefully when dry. The clothes are not as smooth as when ironed, but the effect doesn't last long so I no longer bother.

Maskless · 13/09/2021 06:36

Last owned one 22 yrs ago.

schnubbins · 13/09/2021 06:39

I iron a lot even though I hate it.Shirts , blouses , dresses , T shirts , linen and my bed clothes.I find that there is loads more ironing in the summer months .I have a big huge steam iron that makes it all a bit easier but am also perplexed that most people do not iron.

sbhydrogen · 13/09/2021 06:41

I'm thinking of doing away with my iron and getting a small steamer instead.

RampantIvy · 13/09/2021 06:43

I don't think it is a badge of honour to not own an iron or do any ironing.

I don't understand the sneery attitude that some mumsnetters have towards people who want to or have to look smart.

User4378645 · 13/09/2021 06:47

I'm in my 60s and don't have an iron or an ironing board, they take up a lot of room to have one and not use it.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 13/09/2021 06:51

When I was married and my DC were at school I'd have lots of shirts to iron. I used to buy M&S school trousers that went in the tumble dryer and didn't need ironing.

I now only iron if I'm sewing, or for a couple of linen things I have, and rarely tumble dry anything. Never iron bedding - careful pegging out means it's not creased, and any slight crumpling disappears once on the bed in a warm room. My mother was amazed when she found out I didn't iron it - as it looked as good as her ironed bedding.

I'm a complete neat freak, I absolutely don't look crumpled!

Belledan1 · 13/09/2021 06:51

I dont really iron either. Bit lazy but I have a refresh button on my dryer so if things look greased I put it on that for 5 mins.

I do look 'smart'. I have to for work.
MondayYogurt · 13/09/2021 06:55

Iron owner, not iron user. Just wear clothes that don't need it.

Wiredforsound · 13/09/2021 06:56

God, I remember irons. My mum used to have one. I wonder what happened to it.

HelloDulling · 13/09/2021 06:57

Nothing needs ironing, in that it will still cover a section of your body when unironed, but most things look better for it. I choose clothes for myself and the DC based on how they look, and want them to look their best when I wear them. But by MN standards I am vain and shallow, so no doubt my desire not to wear a creased shirt will only cement that opinion.

polkadotpixie · 13/09/2021 07:00

I don't own an iron. Mine went mouldy because DH left water in it so I threw it away about 5 years ago

I genuinely don't know how anyone has time to iron when juggling a FT job and young DC. My Mum was (& still is) a slave to her iron. I think she's absolutely barking tbh!

I suppose I might have to reconsider when I have school uniform to think about but for now? No thanks...if anything looks too bad I can always run my straighteners over it 😂

TheGoogleMum · 13/09/2021 07:01

We no longer have an iron. I did mean to replace it but we've been managing without. We've never ironed much anyway. Some clothes do look better for it, this is stuff that never gets ironed though. Some things do need it, so they mostly don't get worn Wink I guess might have to get for when DD starts school because shirts are one of those things thay really do need ironing. I might try a handheld steamer first though!

HeadNorth · 13/09/2021 07:04

I've never seen the point of ironing. Why do you want flat clothes - your body isn't flat?

We have one DH used to use occasionally but neither of us has touched it in years.

wedwewerpink · 13/09/2021 07:14

What??Confused

Lanique · 13/09/2021 07:17

We have a washing line and a Sheila Maid, and only use the tumble dryer in wet or cold weather for towels, bedding and on days when I can't be arsed to hang it. Anything that might look crumpled is always hung up.

Dh doesn't wear shirts to work, so the only time the iron is used is when he has washed a 'going out shirt' or for smart trousers or wide leg jeans that have just been washed.

In other words, pretty rarely.

Once I was ironing and dd1 said something along the lines of, "wow you look like one of those normal mums" Grin I'm really not particularly out there!
