to not own an iron?

Just read a thread on whether to iron school shirts or not. I never iron school shirts or anything else for that matter.

We used to have an iron but very very rarely got used, DH decided to take it on holiday (no idea why, I don’t iron at home so not sure why he thought I would on holiday) and left it in a cupboard. I’ve never replaced it.

I hang stuff straight from washing & drying. Never looks creased. If something looks bad, stick it on and blast the hair dryer at it.

DH doesn’t wear shirt & tie to work, I may need to reconsider if he did.

Anyone else not iron?!
YABU - of course I iron!
YANBU - no need to iron, wash, hang & wear

I never used to iron. I just bought clothes with stretch in and/or hung smarter stuff like school uniforms. We were discussing this at kid's party and another mum looked at me in horror, "YOU DON'T IRON HIS UNIFORM?!" I felt a bit guilty after that... Still didn't bother ironing it though 🤷
That was until I quit smoking AND bought my first tumble dryer back in February and now I'm obsessed with ironing. I love getting my laundry done quick and watching the pile build up so I can iron and listen to my podcasts while I do it. And the neatness of the piles! I'm at work right now and I'm off to see if there's any lying around here for me to do.
However, no you're not being unreasonable. I'm just a fucking crank.

I've just remembered something I discovered with ironing. If your tea towels still smell a bit foody/greasy even after washing, if you iron them the smell goes. Must be the high temp.
When my Dsis lived in Zimbabwe clothes were ironed to ensure no bugs, nasty creepies were in the clothing, or if they were they were cooked.

prepares for a flaming...
worked in recruitment for 25 years - some days we had to interview 25 people for jobs on a clients behalf so you had to be quick in appraising candidates -
I wouldn't judge someone for whether they had an iron or not but if they came in wearing a creased shirt it would be hard to think they were serious about the job compared to someone looking sharp for their interview ( clean and tidy not expensive suits). Thinking more broadly, having a school place or a job aren't a given for a lot of the world ..imagine their reaction to those who were turning up in creased clothes - and unless someone has a magic wand I have no idea how a school or work shirt won't look creased..

I know I packed an iron when I moved house. That was over 8 years ago and I haven’t used it since.

I live on my own, so that may have a bearing on things. But so many clothes nowadays seem to dry ok. And life is definitely too short to be ironing bedding - it gets creased the first time it’s slept in.

Furries · 15/09/2021 02:57

@tellittomyhead

I use my iron about twice a day and also spend about 4 hours out of my weekend ironing all my clothes and bedding. I find those who don't bother to be very lazy - and common.
Meanwhile, there are plenty of us utilising time productively elsewhere - and maybe having a bit more fun!

I have a small craft iron that gets used for perler beads and other craft projects. Haven't used one in clothes in years and years!

I wear a lot of natural materials so an iron is essential really. Also, it takes less time to iron out creases than hairdry them so yabu from a time perspective.

gofg · 15/09/2021 05:43

I'm the same Ozanj, I wear mainly natural fabrics and they look much better once ironed. Also agree on the hairdryer thing - it really takes no time to iron garments Confused

An interview is one of the rare occasions I would iron something as I'm sure is the same for others on this thread who say they iron but only occasionally, weddings/funerals would be another or a big work event for example.

LOL, I don't think the upper classes do their own ironing.
MrsMcCluskeysCat · 15/09/2021 07:31

@00100001 yes I'm pretty sure anyone with a bit of money would be outsourcing it and therefore be just as lazy Grin
