I don’t usually do politics but my God, this situation is unacceptable. The US, the UK and whoever else was previously involved in the past 20- year restructure of Afghanistan need to return there right now, with additional support and get rid of the Taliban and Isis, no matter how long this takes.

I am utterly disgusted with our govt. The way I see it. we can return now and deal with it, or return in a few years after it’s been brought onto our own soil.

Where is the humanity in this crisis?

Go on then. If you're so upset and disgusted, go risk your life.

Or... Did you mean other people should go and risk their lives?

Blossomtoes · 26/08/2021 19:11

We’ve been losing British lives in Afghanistan for almost 200 years now. Time to call it a day.

KeyErro · 26/08/2021 19:14

YABVVU
How do you propose to 'deal with it'?
How would that be different from what we've just spent 20 years trying unsuccessfully, and with great loss of life, to do?

EsmaCannonball · 26/08/2021 19:14

The way the US handled the withdrawal has been an utter disgrace.

The Taliban vs. ISIS-K is going to be interesting. Either way, terrible for everyone in the country and the region is going to become a terrorist base.

FOJN · 26/08/2021 19:16

We're being lead to believe that the only options were direct military engagement with the Taliban or complete withdrawal, other options were put forward. It would have been possible to keep a small force supporting the ANA from the air but this idea was rejected. The order of operations was back to front and allied forces were left with Karbul Airport as the only way in and out of the country. Now more US servicemen are dead as the result of a monumental fuck up, the size of which I have never seen before. The terrorist attack today became inevitable the moment Bagram Airbase was abandoned whilst there were still thousands of people needing to get out of the country.

The Taliban now has hostages whilst ISIS and Al Qaida are active in Karbul. I anticipate an atrocity on the anniversary of 9/11 as the ultimate fuck you gesture. I suspect it will involve US hostages and the destruction of the US embassy.

I can hardly bear to watch anymore and I'm beyond angry.

gardeninggirl68 · 26/08/2021 19:17

op.....are you aware we withdrew from Afghanistan in 2014?

we haven't been there in volume for years

5zeds · 26/08/2021 19:18

Surely the Taliban are Afghan? How do we liberate afghans from themselves?

gardeninggirl68 · 26/08/2021 19:18

yes, i also think something may be planned for 9/11

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 26/08/2021 19:19

Liberate them how? The Taliban seem to be welcomed by many.

giggly · 26/08/2021 19:20

I came on to say it’s not 20 years but well over 140 years but @Blossomtoeso beat me to it. Go read about the Thin red line about The Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders fight in Afghanistan.
This is not a country to go to war with.
Again like pp I suggest you sign yourself up as opposed to sending UK troops back out.

Noroiscoming · 26/08/2021 19:23

Send every available plane to evacuate every person that wants to get out. Leave the Taliban and their supporters to rule over a deserted country.

I know that's impossible and would probably cause even worse problems further down the line. But I'd be bloody tempted to do it if I was the POTUS. Put that bloated military budget to good use for once.

FeatheredHope · 26/08/2021 19:23

Afghani = a currency

Afghans = the people of Afghanistan.

If you’re talking about war and liberation, perhaps call the people you’re discussing by the right name ffs.

gardeninggirl68 · 26/08/2021 19:23

in fact the sceptic in me thinks that this is why Biden pulled troops early....they may have intelligence that something was planned for 9/11 anniversary hence getting U.S personnel to safety well in advance

TheWoleb · 26/08/2021 19:25

Afghani = Currency of Afghanistan
Afghan = Person from Afghanistan

TheWoleb · 26/08/2021 19:26

Cross-posted!

Unfashionable · 26/08/2021 19:26

We tried to fix Afghanistan for twenty years. We spent trillions of dollars, and thousands of British, American, Canadian & other western nations’ lives. We failed, and it all fell apart in the end, as it was always going to.

The people of the lands known in the west as Afghanistan, including the mountainous tribal areas of northern Pakistan, have been fighting each other for centuries. There is nothing we can do to change that, and we shouldn’t try.

those planes would be at massive risk, thats if they could even safely land....who would pilot them? who would sort through the passengers documents ensuring the correct people are aboard? and where will they land should they be lucky enough to get out of their airspace?
Crazycatlady83 · 26/08/2021 19:29

Would you go OP, would you send your son, daughter, brother, sister?

Nothing is fixed by war, have we learnt nothing over the last 20 years?

lking679 · 26/08/2021 19:31

I don’t see how western intervention has ever really helped liberate anything. Anyway why them... why not the people of North Korea? Belarus?
Fighting never seems to get anywhere when the other side are equally armed. It seems sanctions and making things difficult for them is only way to try and get them to play ball.
In the meantime we need security measures that protect us from any state sponsored terrorism... it’s a worry!

TartanJumper · 26/08/2021 19:34

Rightly or wrongly, Trump (and whoever else) struck a deal with the Taliban to withdraw and the US should honour that deal. If they don't like the terms, they shouldn't have agreed them.
I do think they should have evacuated everybody they needed to before withdrawing troops, though.

Theunamedcat · 26/08/2021 19:35

Are you fucking joking? The Americans have just armed them

Piss off are we going in again anytime soon

youdontnome · 26/08/2021 19:36

My son is out there now. I am absolutely beside myself with worry. Perhaps you would like to send your relatives so that you can know how I feel. I however want him back asap.

gardeninggirl68 · 26/08/2021 19:36

12 U.S troops killed...when is enough enough?

HermioneWeasley · 26/08/2021 19:39

20 years wasn’t enough to achieve a stable, viable government. This is not something we can fix. However, the withdrawal has been an absolute shambles and should have been much better handled. We have abandoned our allies who are being killed in the street for being collaborators. Women and girls confined to their houses. It’s awful.

Noroiscoming · 26/08/2021 19:40

@gardeninggirl68 I know it's not feasible. It's just very hard to watch what's happening and be completely helpless to stop it Sad
