to complain about upside down dairylea add

I've seen this appalling ad a few times

Two young children dangling upside down by their knees, eating cheese in the hope that if they eat it upside down it will feed their brains

It took me a while to catch what it was actually advertising, but now I know, I am making a formal complaint

I cant believe how utterly stupid and irresponsible this is an as example to junior school aged children

MintyGreenDream · 23/08/2021 12:11

Haven't seen it but doesn't sound as bad as the Tango ads back in the day

54321nought · 23/08/2021 12:17

tango ads were awful, I agree, but why is showing an example of eating cheese dangling upside down by your knees any better?

Surely this is more dangerous

Seems wise.
I complained about the bold ad, utterly stupid and sexist, hardly 1950s

vodkaredbullgirl · 23/08/2021 12:21

Seen it a few times, daft idea that it will go to your brain if upside down.

It's an ad

Lockheart · 23/08/2021 12:26

Eating upside down isn't dangerous. It doesn't increase the risk of choking.

Your trachea is separate from your oesophagus.

Your oesophagus does not rely on gravity to move food to your digestive system, that's done by muscles.

I know its an ad

I don't care if its stupid

I care that children who try to copy it will be in danger of choking

Eating upside down certainly does hugely increase the possibility of choking, as does eating while engaging in any form of acrobatics

But they won’t?

But they won’t?
who won't what?

children won't copy it?

Children copy things!

I think you need to watch the news or something and see if you can find something different to worry about.

BlackberrySky · 23/08/2021 12:40

Good grief, even the most banal use of humour seems to cause problems these days. Children do get irony you know. What a dull world it would be if everything had to be so literal. When my children were young there was a cereal advert where the children fly off upside down in an aeroplane. They never tried to do it.

I am sure there are many things to worry about and many danger

why increase them by giving children an example of eating cheese upside down?

They probably didn't have the resources, but most children have access to cheese, and places to hang upside down

Is it concern over risk of choking?

maddening · 23/08/2021 12:48

Sorry, yes you have said it is, yanbu, dc's , even sensible ones, can do stupid things, and are v suggestible, so yanbu.

Returnoftheowl · 23/08/2021 12:48

YANBU to complain if you wish to.

Just as the rest of the posters aren't being unreasonable about not being bothered about it...

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 23/08/2021 12:52

Captain Birds Eye doesn't wear a life-jacket.

The lady in the Shake n' Vac advert was very exuberant shaking the stuff. A cat suffering from asthma would have dreadful time (but would smell nice).

Battleofwhocouldcareless · 23/08/2021 13:02

I love that advert. I thought it was nice to see children outside, hanging upside down, looks like fun!

Unfortunatly, any child who decided that hanging upside down eating cheese "looked like fun" would be putting themselves in danger

Please do complain, you'll give someone at the ASA a good laugh. When I worked in customer service, bonkers complaints made my day.

HotPinkTeaSet · 23/08/2021 13:07

I haven’t had a diarylea triangle for years. Tempted to buy some on my way home now.

Lockheart · 23/08/2021 13:11

It really, really doesn't OP. You're betraying either a basic knowledge of biology or an inability to google.

www.scienceabc.com/humans/when-were-upside-down-does-it-have-any-effect-on-the-stomachs-contents.html

Think about it a bit more. If trying to swallow food without the help of gravity raises the risk of choking, how do you think the astronauts living on the ISS stay alive day to day?

In fact, hanging upside down is actually a method to unblock an airway if someone was choking: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6606524/

So not only does it NOT increase the risk of choking, it would also be a beneficial position to be in if you WERE choking...

I am a biologist

I have worked in A and E and seen deaths from this sort of thing

The advice to avoid choking is for children to be sitting still and upright

Sure. I’ll bet you couldn’t move for deaths from people hanging upside down eating cheese triangles.
