to complain about upside down dairylea add

I've seen this appalling ad a few times

Two young children dangling upside down by their knees, eating cheese in the hope that if they eat it upside down it will feed their brains

It took me a while to catch what it was actually advertising, but now I know, I am making a formal complaint

I cant believe how utterly stupid and irresponsible this is an as example to junior school aged children

I actually wondered if I was over reacting on the basis that surely no one would be stupid enough.....

but I see from this thread there really are mothers who would genuinely not see the danger

if your child is dim enough to do this you should deal with that first.

54321nought · 23/08/2021 13:26

Cheese is actually one of the single biggest causes of choking, (along with hot dogs)

messing around running, skipping, climbing, jumping, also causes choking

Not being upright is also a contributory factor in child choking deaths

So this advert is advocating snacking one of the worst possible foods in the worst possible situation, as far as likelihood of choking goes

Children are children.

They don't have judgement

You can't blame children for not seeing the danger in behaving like this, that is why it is such a dangerous example

OP, what do you expect them to do when they receive your complaint?
On the grand scheme of things and with everything else going on in the world just now, I think this is a pretty trivial matter...

Haven't seen the ad myself as DH and I record/download things on Sky and fast forward through the ads, but it actually sounds like a good old classic advert promoting the goodness of cheese (mmm, cheese!)

BoredZelda · 23/08/2021 13:30

you think the sudden and avoidable death of a child is a joke?

I think pretending it happens regularly from kids eating upside down is a joke.

I expect them to ban it

Their job is to police adverts

It doesn't matter what else is going on in the world, I expect them to do their job

it happens.

It happens when children eat on while playing on playground equipment

there is not "pretence"

My particular experience was in the USA, not the UK, but American children are not physiologically different

So write them an essay then
KeepSmiling89 · 23/08/2021 13:33

Ban it? Based on one complaint...? Hmm Good luck with that.

TheKeatingFive · 23/08/2021 13:36

Sure. I’ll bet you couldn’t move for deaths from people hanging upside down eating cheese triangles.

I spat out my soup laughing at that Grin

I hope you weren't eating that soup upside down! Grin

Cheese is actually one of the single biggest causes of choking

Cheese is actually one of a list of about a dozen things and it refers to chunks of solid cheese. Not soft cheese.

I doubt I am the only one complaining, it really is an very dangerous example , and even more dangerous than I realised, based on the ignorance of the danger I have seen on here.

I hope more people complain though, the more complaints, the better

BoredZelda · 23/08/2021 13:38

As long as you didn’t choke on it.

TheKeatingFive · 23/08/2021 13:39

As long as you didn’t choke on it.

Being the incredibly lucky person I am I lived to tell the tale.

ineedaholidaynow · 23/08/2021 13:40

Why is soft cheese a choking hazard, even if eating it the right way up?

Glugglejug · 23/08/2021 13:40

Genuine question: don’t you tip people who are choking kind of upside down(ish) anyway? Gravity and all that?

peachgreen · 23/08/2021 13:42

Surely it would be impossible to choke on Dairylea regardless of one's relative positioning?

BoredZelda · 23/08/2021 13:42

It happens when children eat on while playing on playground equipment

It also happens when children are sitting at a table. Are you going to complain about those adverts too?

54321nought · 23/08/2021 13:44

It happens far less when sitting at the table

It is far more likely to happen in playgrounds, cars, moving around, being in the wrong position.

Are people genuinely not aware of this?

eh?

What?

Why would you think that?
