to complain about upside down dairylea add

I've seen this appalling ad a few times

Two young children dangling upside down by their knees, eating cheese in the hope that if they eat it upside down it will feed their brains

It took me a while to catch what it was actually advertising, but now I know, I am making a formal complaint

I cant believe how utterly stupid and irresponsible this is an as example to junior school aged children

Or...you know...the adult in charge of any children could watch the advert and you know.... Teach their kids that it's quite dangerous etc. And that they shouldn't do it.

You know...the adults that are here to guide and care for kids...

1forAll74 · 23/08/2021 14:18

The ad people might take it down, if they hadn't even thought it was a dangerous ad. There seem to be a lot of stupid people, doing ridiculous ads these days,

Reallybadidea · 23/08/2021 14:19

I can understand why choking risk might be increased by running around, lying down and jumping about, because there's a higher chance of food being dislodged and then inadvertently entering the trachea if the person isn't actively swallowing.

But if you're hanging upside down if any food is dislodged from the teeth, surely it will be more likely to fall into the roof of the mouth than enter the trachea? To get food to the back of your mouth when hanging upside down, you need to actively swallow, which closes the epiglottis.

What am I missing?

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 23/08/2021 14:20

I hope you never watch any Irn Bru adverts op.

The one with the baby drinking a can of it in the womb was particularly dangerous.

catinboots21 · 23/08/2021 14:20

@BoredZelda

have worked in A and E and seen deaths from this sort of thing

Sure. I’ll bet you couldn’t move for deaths from people hanging upside down eating cheese triangles.

Use this time to talk to your children, instead of making a complaint @54321nought.

Actual LOL
iBrows · 23/08/2021 14:22

You sound very cheesed off about it.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 23/08/2021 14:23

This is the most batshit complaint I've ever heard

00100001 · 23/08/2021 14:24

@54321nought

I think you're over sensitive, because, yes you've seen kids choking and/or dying. Awful.

However. The risk of choking on cheese spread whilst upside down has to be virtually zero? The child is more likely to choke on a cheese sandwich sitting at the table.

You're being OTT.

FazedNotPhased · 23/08/2021 14:25

Tread caerphilly, the OP clearly isn't as cheesy-going as some of you lot.

user1495884211 · 23/08/2021 14:31

I'm finding the whole thread a bit unbrieleaveable.

MauveMagnolia · 23/08/2021 14:31

@54321nought

Cheese is actually one of the single biggest causes of choking, (along with hot dogs)

messing around running, skipping, climbing, jumping, also causes choking

Not being upright is also a contributory factor in child choking deaths

So this advert is advocating snacking one of the worst possible foods in the worst possible situation, as far as likelihood of choking goes

Dairylea isn’t cheese though
LavenderAskew · 23/08/2021 14:39

Cheese chocking aside. What patient-facing job does a biologist do in A&E?

Feel like I missed a trick, I loved ER.

Reallybadidea · 23/08/2021 14:39

It's feta to be careful where cheese is concerned.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 23/08/2021 14:40

I am a trained first aider and have dealt with a number of choking incidents over the years. All of them have been whilst sat up at a table eating. Most of them have been on odd bits of fish bone or some such, not cheese triangles

JorisBonson · 23/08/2021 14:41

I really wish I had the time to be not only bothered, but make complaints about things like this.

ElizaDarcysDeeds · 23/08/2021 14:47

Set your mind at cheese OP, Dairylea isn't a hard cheese. If the ad had been for Cheddar, it would have been more of a gruyere area.

well, you have time to post on Mumsnet, so you clearly do have time to make the omplaint

Gosh OP, I’m so sorry that everyone on here is actually joking about what you personally and professionally see as a choking risk.
You have clearly posted at the wrong time. You would probably get a different response if you reposted and the first person who replied agreed “yanbu” 🙄 then nearly everyone after the first poster will just simply agree...!

PineapplePanda · 23/08/2021 14:53

YABU.

I guess the cheese advert didn't grate on me as much.
