to complain about upside down dairylea add

I've seen this appalling ad a few times

Two young children dangling upside down by their knees, eating cheese in the hope that if they eat it upside down it will feed their brains

It took me a while to catch what it was actually advertising, but now I know, I am making a formal complaint

I cant believe how utterly stupid and irresponsible this is an as example to junior school aged children

I'm not sure why you are getting a hard time here, OP.

I am a very laid back parent by most standards, but I am well aware that choking is one of the most likely causes of accidental fatality in children and I take it seriously. I make sure that my kids do not run around while eating, and that they understand why they shouldn't.

I haven't seen the ad and so I can't comment on the specifics, but an advert aimed at children which promotes eating while being active is, I think, misjudged.

ineedaholidaynow · 23/08/2021 13:47

I used to eat dairylea triangles by slightly opening one corner of the foil then sucking the cheese out, so I suppose if I sucked too hard and ended up swallowing the whole triangle including the foil I might end up choking!

Didn’t everyone do that? We pretended it was toothpaste.

BigRedFrog · 23/08/2021 13:49

I've got the urge to hang upside down while eating a cheese triangle now.
Does it have to be dairy Lee or will any old cheese triangle do?

Beat me to it!
titchy · 23/08/2021 13:50

Not being upright is also a contributory factor in child choking deaths

You're being disengenuous. The danger from not being upright is lying on your back unconscious not hanging upside down. The risk of being upside vs upright is no different.

mafted · 23/08/2021 13:52

It's an advert not a serving suggestion.

PineapplePanda · 23/08/2021 13:53

Pretty sure the cheese that causes most choking is stringy mozzarella cheese that you get on pizzas. Not a soft cheese like Dairylea.

There's probably more chance of the child injuring themselves from falling out the tree than eating cheese upside down.

But I think we should conduct our own research to test the theory!

OP have you reported the advert to the police? I think you'll get a much better response by escalating it straight to them.

I'm going to try it with a Baby Bell. I'm worried about the red outer skin though - even when I'm sitting down properly at the kitchen table, that bit always is difficult to swallow.

I personally prefer eating my dairylea whilst bungee jumping above a canyon.
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 23/08/2021 13:55

I used to love swinging upside from my knees...until I fell off, dear God I remember the bump now and that was 45 years ago Shock

If you have a rule that you eat at the table not wandering (or hanging) around you won't have an issue.

Be careful, they go bouncing out of the window into people's hands singing ba ba ba babybel

ineedaholidaynow · 23/08/2021 13:56

If anyone is going to try this, picture or it didn't happen!

so you understand how dangerous it is to put this example in front of children, if it makes even a (presumably) sensible, normally educated adult think or joke about doing it?

Is a close paraphrase of what a friend of mine said to me when I pulled one out of a packed lunch on a school trip.

'I don't think you're supposed to eat that bit.' I replied.

Royalbloo · 23/08/2021 13:58

I 100% agree - totally irresponsible and I seldom get annoyed by these things

EstuaryBird · 23/08/2021 13:58

I probably ate most of my food during childhood upside down and never choked once 😊.

A quick google and I’ve only found information to say that it’s absolutely fine to eat upside down because of peristalsis 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Can you provide some stats please on child deaths from eating upside down and cheese, please. Thank you.

I have some Laughing Cow, happy to try that for a comparison if you like 😊
BigRedFrog · 23/08/2021 14:02

@54321nought I might be doing it with the kids, have you thought about that.

ineedaholidaynow · 23/08/2021 14:02

I am envisaging a number of Mnetters ending upon A&E later, not because they have choked on eating cheese, but because they have fallen off the monkey bars whilst trying to hang upside down!

BigRedFrog · 23/08/2021 14:05

That's a bit posh @EstuaryBird mines an Aldi one.
Now there's a whole row of us hanging upside down with various cheese triangles, babybels and whatnot. 👍
First one to choke gets a back slapping.

MumofSpud · 23/08/2021 14:08

I have a great fear of choking (based on a childhood experience with my younger brother - all turned out ok in the end) and this fear (phobia?) impacted on how I fed my own DC.
I have just stopped cutting up DD's grapes - she is 15Blush.
But OP - really?

Ostryga · 23/08/2021 14:08

@BoredZelda

have worked in A and E and seen deaths from this sort of thing

Sure. I’ll bet you couldn’t move for deaths from people hanging upside down eating cheese triangles.

Fucking hell mumsnet has some absolute GOLD comments sometimes Grin Grin
vodkaredbullgirl · 23/08/2021 14:09

I tried drink upside down to get rid of hiccups, ended up all over me instead. Got rid of the hiccups though Smile

Lweji · 23/08/2021 14:10

Surely this thread has to become a classic. Alongside discusting pirates and pombears.

I'd give it a Biscuit, but I'd afraid someone would choke on it.

My main concern would be the children snorting the cheese, due to the action of gravity.
