I've seen this appalling ad a few times

Two young children dangling upside down by their knees, eating cheese in the hope that if they eat it upside down it will feed their brains

It took me a while to catch what it was actually advertising, but now I know, I am making a formal complaint

I cant believe how utterly stupid and irresponsible this is an as example to junior school aged children

OP posts:

@VeganVeal

I blame the start of child obesity on the old shredded wheat advert 'I bet you cant eat three'. Totally irresponsible
And flatulence on the Pringles advert!

Completely irresponsible.

Silvercatowner · 23/08/2021 15:47

have worked in A and E and seen deaths from this sort of thing

Sure. I’ll bet you couldn’t move for deaths from people hanging upside down eating cheese triangles

Grin Grin Grin

Livebythecoast · 23/08/2021 15:49

In the words of The Beatles ... 'let it brie'

user1495884211 · 23/08/2021 15:50

If you really want a choking hazard - how about the challenge "I bet you can't put a fruit pastille in your mouth without chewing it." I bet they're the perfect size and shape to block the windpipe.

vodkaredbullgirl · 23/08/2021 15:58

Here edam the lesson

ExConstance · 23/08/2021 16:00

I know of two cases of people I know choking to death over 15 years. ( I work in care) On both occasions the person was out with their family having a meal and sitting at a restaurant table eating when it happened. They were not frail people receiving care but adults with no serious health problems in late middle age. On both occasions lumps of meat were the offending substances.
OP you refuse to be to;ld you are ridiculous but do come back and share the result of your complaint. I don't think the ad would be allowed if it promoted something as unsafe as you suppose.

JudgeJ · 23/08/2021 16:01

@BigRedFrog

I've got the urge to hang upside down while eating a cheese triangle now. Does it have to be dairy Lee or will any old cheese triangle do?
No, try an alternative and give La Vache a Rit.
NConrepeat · 23/08/2021 16:04

YANBU - have you seen the long ingredients list for Dairylea? Laughing Cow only has 4 ingredients. That is all.

NConrepeat · 23/08/2021 16:06

No, try an alternative and give La Vache a Rit

Yes, much better, plus your DC will learn French.

NConrepeat · 23/08/2021 16:06

La Vache qui Rit though

ArnoldJudasRimmer · 23/08/2021 16:07

We'll be laughing on the other sides of our faces when Boris asks us all to stay home and avoid climbing frames to protect the NHS (from an influx of upside down cheese choking incidents). 😁

thecognoscenti · 23/08/2021 16:08

MOST CHILDREN HAVE ACCESS TO CHEESE 😂 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

user1495884211 · 23/08/2021 16:09

@NConrepeat

La Vache qui Rit though
That takes mumsnet SPAG pedantry to another level! Grin
NConrepeat · 23/08/2021 16:10

Sorry, not sorry

Allywill · 23/08/2021 16:11

While at uni I was on a coach trip with my friend from my degree course. I offered her a boiled sweet. She said she was not allowed to eat sweets in a moving vehicle (banned by her mother) due to the risk of a sudden bump in the road causing choking. She was 21 years of age. I was 😳

vodkaredbullgirl · 23/08/2021 16:12

I nearly chocked on a whole packet of polo mints, was trying to see how many I could fit in my mouth.

OverweightPidgeon · 23/08/2021 16:17

Calm your tits Op . By all means report the ad and let us know how you get on.

FunTimes2020 · 23/08/2021 16:21

Why come on here asking if yabu when you dispute what anyone who disagrees with you says? You could have got your complaint written and sent by now!!!

grumpygiraffe · 23/08/2021 16:22

well, you have time to post on Mumsnet, so you clearly do have time to make the omplaint

Is that supposed to say complaint or omelette?

vodkaredbullgirl · 23/08/2021 16:24

Cheese omelette I hope.

00100001 · 23/08/2021 16:26

YABU unreasonable to report it, because the risk of choking on dairylea whilst upside down is next to nothing.
Your child is more likely to choke on the fish fingers in the next advert.
..and the kids are eating them on a rocking boat... Shock

So, yes, YABVU, to think that this advert is sending dangerous messages to children and there'll be some sort of influx of children having choked on cheese spread whilst upside down.

Tell the kids in your own life that you think it is dangerous.

But let's face facts... More children choke on actual cheese, tomatoes, sausages etc whilst sitting nicely at the table than those who are eating a cheese triangle whilst hanging from a climbing frame....

Spend your time campaigning to twsie awareness of the choking hazard that sausages present. Only a year ago a 3 yo choked to death on a cocktail sausage, because it wasn't cut length ways.

You'll get far more support from that, because it's an actual real problem.

Peacrock · 23/08/2021 16:26

Captain Birds Eye doesn't wear a life-jacket

Lmao

feb2022 · 23/08/2021 16:26

Cheesus Christ! This thread went a bit tits upside down.. on a climbing frame

00100001 · 23/08/2021 16:27

@vodkaredbullgirl

Cheese omelette I hope.
Cheese omelettes have increased risk of choking. So stick to nice plain one when you're hanging from your knees at the park 👍
Polmuggle · 23/08/2021 16:28

@54321nought

Cheese is actually one of the single biggest causes of choking, (along with hot dogs)

messing around running, skipping, climbing, jumping, also causes choking

Not being upright is also a contributory factor in child choking deaths

So this advert is advocating snacking one of the worst possible foods in the worst possible situation, as far as likelihood of choking goes

Hard cheese cubes cause choking.

Soft cheese is not a high choking risk.
