Picture of Grayson Perry at a wedding. Posted to Instagram with the caption "I am at a wedding, I didn't want to upstage the bride so went comfy and low key"

AIBU in thinking that in this outfit, upstaging the bride is exactly what he wanted to do? The comments on his post are all "Fab outfit", "You look amazing", "I bet the bride wouldn't have minded being upstaged by you" etc etc. I normally like GP but this is just so me, me, me and selfish.

Who goes to a wedding in dungarees and a hoodie? Am I just being a grump? It wouldn't be completely unheard of

AIBU to think this outfit is inappropriate?

As pp have said, presumably you know what to expect if you invite GP to your wedding. He looks ridiculous (as usual) and is undoubtedly a huge attention-seeker, but I can't imagine a bride being upstaged by that unless she was also going for the 'explosion in a jumble sale' look tbh.

MadamBatty · 08/08/2021 17:37

So brave & stunning

He was very considerate not to turn up in the same dress as the flower girl.

MereDintofPandiculation · 08/08/2021 17:45

his art consists of little girls with penises, kids being kidnapped, and masturbating Have you seen much of his art, or are you just going by what other people have told you?

Lemonlady22 · 08/08/2021 17:46

Is this from the wedding in Hampshire, where it was raining?

Nohomemadecandles · 08/08/2021 17:46

I suppose if you invite any celebrity to a non celeb wedding they're going to steal some of the limelight anyway

CuriousaboutSamphire · 08/08/2021 18:04

@Monestera

You could easily dislike him for using an official engagement with small children for kicks.

What is this supposed to mean?

You'd have to see the pictures and understand his well known fetish to answer that.

All well explained over the years by the man himself!

JoborPlay · 08/08/2021 18:06

Toomuchtodoo

I think he looks great too. I'm not 'pandering' to anything. I wish more people would embrace their own personal sense of style, what makes them feel happy and good rather than pandering to societal norms. We might have fewer mental health issues if we did.

JoborPlay · 08/08/2021 18:07

And thinking someone looks great is not the same as saying I'd wear it, like to wear it or whatever.

MadameKali · 08/08/2021 18:08

@happydays2345

You sound delightful OP.
Wow. Thanks @happydays2345

As it happens, I am delightful. Anything to say about what I posted? Nope? Because that's what most people who've responded have done and I've said yep, AWBU and also a grumpy mare. Thanks for you opinion though Hmm

And I have no clue why it’s being accepted and people are desperate to say he looks fab.

I think it’s because, having watched his programmes on tv or having heard him talk, people really like him.

I was put off for years by photos of his alter ego. I had all sorts of judgemental prejudice against cross-dressing men. More fool me, as I was missing out on a very compassionate and astute individual.

Kanaloa · 08/08/2021 18:11

@MereDintofPandiculation

I’m going by an article I read online, either Times or Guardian. The same article said he used to play ‘bondage games’ with this teddy he is still attached to.

Another article quoted him saying “Claire's pleasure comes from being cooed over and petted like a pretty little girl. "The perfect transvestite experience," says Perry, "would be traipsing along the street with someone holding a gigantic mirror in front of me so that I could see myself the whole time and know exactly what I looked like."

I wouldn’t be telling this person they looked great, I’d be suggesting they need help. That just sounds awful to me.

Kanaloa · 08/08/2021 18:12

And this isn’t a ‘personal sense of style.’ It’s a fetish, it’s quite different from thinking ooh I’ll wear these dungarees, they’re a lovely colour. It’s more ‘look at me in these dungarees, I’m just a helpless little girl, that feels so sexy to me.’

Monestera · 08/08/2021 18:14

You could easily dislike him for using an official engagement with small children for kicks

If you’re not going to justify this comment @CuriousaboutSamphire, would you link me to one of his well-documented explanations? I like what I’ve seen of him. Obviously, if there’s evidence of him deliberately attending child-centred engagements for sexual kicks I’d like to be informed about.

At the moment it reads like a slur against someone who is a bit different.

CarlottaValdez · 08/08/2021 18:18

I don’t understand the trend for dungarees on adults though. Great for babies/toddlers as you can change nappies easily.

Why are they easier for nappies? They’re harder than trousers or leggings surely?

Chachachawoo · 08/08/2021 18:43

Looks like Geoffrey from Rainbow forgot to get a haircut

ellyeth · 08/08/2021 18:51

I would imagine Grayson Perry's friends are probably on the unconventional side so maybe this wouldn't have been an issue for them.

This outfit may well be comfy but it certainly isn't "low key". Perhaps he was joking or perhaps he just assumes his friends won't mind. I like GP and think he is very creative, but, being a bit cynical, I often wonder if this ostentatious style of clothing was initially to create a brand that would make him stand out.

ohthatbloodycat · 08/08/2021 18:53

No idea who he is, but he looks like a total dickhead.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 08/08/2021 18:54

Nothing 'low key' about that dayglo monstrosity.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/08/2021 19:02

And you sound like one. No idea who you are either.
Heronwatcher · 08/08/2021 19:08

For Grayson Perry that’s pretty low key- have you google image searched him? And if I knew him and he turned up at my wedding in a shiny suit and buttonhole I would be positively devastated!!

sleepyhoglet · 08/08/2021 19:15

I don't know who this man is and I am clearly judging on appearances but he looks creepy

KittenKong · 08/08/2021 19:44

He’s an artist - well a potter (not sure if he does other things). He has pots on display in the British Museum. Often dresses as his ‘alter ego’ which looks like a Victorian dolly.

Reloxa · 08/08/2021 19:47

The fact he's married to a sensible, intelligent woman makes his way of dressing a lot more acceptable to people, I think. I don't like the little girl outfits for the reasons mentioned on this thread ie its for a sexual kick.

As for the outfit in question, it's pretty scruffy for a wedding, the people behind him look smart. But at least it wasn't a flouncy little girl party dress, which really would have been upstaging.

KittenKong · 08/08/2021 19:48

Well I guess it’s ‘Grayson Perry’ not ‘Great Uncle Fred who works in the Co-Op’.

Thislittlefinger123 · 08/08/2021 19:50

I'm guessing a few pp don't know who he is. As one pp said, I'd be disappointed if I invited him to my wedding and he turned up in a boring suit Grin
