AIBU to think this outfit is inappropriate?

Picture of Grayson Perry at a wedding. Posted to Instagram with the caption "I am at a wedding, I didn't want to upstage the bride so went comfy and low key"

AIBU in thinking that in this outfit, upstaging the bride is exactly what he wanted to do? The comments on his post are all "Fab outfit", "You look amazing", "I bet the bride wouldn't have minded being upstaged by you" etc etc. I normally like GP but this is just so me, me, me and selfish.

Who goes to a wedding in dungarees and a hoodie? Am I just being a grump? It wouldn't be completely unheard of

I think it’s odd to assume that all brides want to be centre of attention, regardless of the obvious point that if you are friends with Grayson Perry, you know how he likes to dress.

Kanaloa · 08/08/2021 16:50

This is another photo of him if anyone who thinks he looks great is interested. He says he prefers dressing like this as when he would wear a ‘boring outfit from monsoon’ hardly anyone would look at him.

He says he likes this style as it is ‘more young, vulnerable and humiliating.’ Honestly how people are gushing about how he looks great I don’t know. He’s fetishising a look associated with little girls because it makes him feel ‘young and vulnerable’ and his art consists of little girls with penises, kids being kidnapped, and masturbating toys.

@EishetChayil

Typical narcissist.
Why must everyone doing anything someone doesn’t like be “a narcissist” (or, even worse, “a narc”) nowadays?
TheGlassBlowersDaughter · 08/08/2021 16:51

I don't think it's an upstaging outfit. Lots of people wear colourful and not particularly flattering outfits to weddings. I wouldn't accuse them of trying to upstage the bride.

Kanaloa · 08/08/2021 16:52

That said, I’d have no problem with a man who wanted to wear clothes designed for women - I think we need more crossover and less rigid gender ideas, so a man wearing a ‘women’s’ blouse or jeans if he likes them. But that isn’t really what’s happening here.

Unsure33 · 08/08/2021 16:56

@Kanaloa

I suggest you watch him and his wife on his lockdown Art club.

He is not like that at all.

And he quite often dresses as a woman

Kanaloa · 08/08/2021 16:58

No thanks. Don’t think I’d want to see any more of him, this introduction has been more than enough. I think this type of fetish is actually really damaging.

LizJamIsFab · 08/08/2021 17:00

I would say anyone inviting him would know his “style” and I don’t think he would upstage a bride.

If someone did this out of character I’d question their motives more!

I really enjoyed art club. Especially during lockdown - found it very gentle, and enjoyed him hyping up the art of ordinary people

maddiemookins16mum · 08/08/2021 17:01

Anything is better than dressing up as a little girl.

Damaging? To whom?
Kanaloa · 08/08/2021 17:04

You don’t know why finding dressing up as a little girl as you find it ‘vulnerable and humiliating’ is damaging? It’s a bad attitude to have towards women and little girls, and it doesn’t respect the issues women and unfortunately little girls as well actually face. Little girls often actually ARE vulnerable in a party dress. It isn’t something sexy and kinky to exploit. It’s horrible to see a grown man dress as a little girl because it makes him feel humiliated and he finds that sexy.

Kanaloa · 08/08/2021 17:06

And I have no clue why it’s being accepted and people are desperate to say he looks fab. Nobody would say a man in a latex suit or bondage gear looked ‘great.’

MushMonster · 08/08/2021 17:06

He does look funny!
I would not take it badly if I were the bride, to be honest.
It is a fun thing. People will want pics, which is what you do want in a wedding. It will make for a fun album.

category12 · 08/08/2021 17:07

I think if you invite Grayson Perry to your wedding, you know exactly what to expect and would probably be disappointed if they did anything else.

But he's not in a latex suit or bondage gear, so what's your point again?

I'm guessing he's a friend of the bride or groom and that, actually, they don't give a fuck what he wears.

So long as he only gets pleasure from putting on the clothes, and so long as he's not hurting anybody, then how is it damaging? It's not like he's loitering around gazing at little girls - and what he's choosing to wear has nothing to do with respecting or not respecting women.
Kanaloa · 08/08/2021 17:11

My point is that he’s dressing up to indulge his fetish. He has openly said it arouses him. So I don’t understand why people are telling him he looks great.

Kanaloa · 08/08/2021 17:12

I can see we aren’t going to agree. I personally find it pretty grotesque honestly. If the bride was happy and lots of people think he looks great then they’re entitled to their opinion however much I can’t understand it.

CorianderBee · 08/08/2021 17:12

Meh. I'd be embarrassed to wear that anywhere but it's his choice. Let him embarrass himself.

nocturnalcatfreetogoodhome · 08/08/2021 17:22

@EishetChayil

Typical narcissist.
This.

Might as well have turned up as a bloody bridesmaid.

AuntMasha · 08/08/2021 17:25

God it’s like something out of the 1950s in here. Just leave him alone. He’s a good bloke.

RowanAlong · 08/08/2021 17:29

He’s Grayson Perry! (And of course he’s being deliberately provoking.) Pretty sure the bride wouldn’t have invited him if she was going to worry about his attire...

FreekStar2 · 08/08/2021 17:29

He looks very silly. I do like him though.

DancesWithTortoises · 08/08/2021 17:30

If you invite Grayson to your wedding you know exactly what you are going to get.
