AIBU to think this outfit is inappropriate?

Picture of Grayson Perry at a wedding. Posted to Instagram with the caption "I am at a wedding, I didn't want to upstage the bride so went comfy and low key"

AIBU in thinking that in this outfit, upstaging the bride is exactly what he wanted to do? The comments on his post are all "Fab outfit", "You look amazing", "I bet the bride wouldn't have minded being upstaged by you" etc etc. I normally like GP but this is just so me, me, me and selfish.

Who goes to a wedding in dungarees and a hoodie? Am I just being a grump? It wouldn't be completely unheard of

This is Grayson Perry toned down. If you see his ‘normal’ attire, which I would describe as Alice in Wonderland on acid, then there’s no comparison. It’s part of who his is and why should he change that?

Presume he wouldn’t have just been invited to some ransoms wedding who doesn’t know him.

Presumably they expected similar when they invited him. I wouldn’t dress like that to a wedding and I think anyone that would is that type of person - you know, the ‘look at me, I’m DIFFERENT and SPECIAL’ type. When the rest of us manage just to dress correctly for different occasions.

Other than being inappropriate it’s a very ugly outfit in my personal opinion. But the bride and groom were probably happy enough as they would have expected him to dress like this.

Maybe the bride didn't have the choice really, maybe he's a family member of the groom? Some people are genuinely nice, even for idiots.
I was going to post the same thing, why's everyone assuming the bride would be happy about it? There are loads of threads about unwanted family invites at weddings. I am only vaguely away of GP so assuming he isn't known for not having any family.

That post is totally me me me though, no need to say anything at all if you are genuinely thinking of the bride.

Also, it’s quite a childish outfit for a grown man. Having looked closer I’m pretty sure my 5yo daughter has something similar from mini & maximus.

I won't hear a bad word against him. I've been to a couple of his exhibitions and always liked him. After his lockdown art club I'm even more of a fan. He and his wife seem lovely and this is how he dresses. Good for him.
I'm a huge fan too. I love his work and find him both amusing and thought provoking.

I'd love to own a piece, but doubt if I'd be able to afford a print, never mind a vase (which is what I'd really like).

If Grayson Perry was my friend and I liked him enough to invite him to share my wedding day, why the hell would I expect him to change his appearance. You either accept your friends for who they are or you leave them off the guest list.

He has his own style of dress, that's for sure, but as a true friend, wouldn't that be part of why you love him.

This as an odd thing for you to have an opinion on, seeing as it is not your wedding nor your friend.

I suggest keeping your personal judgements for people who you yourself are involved with.

I should've put a vote on this because it looks like IABU. I guess yes, if you invite GP to a wedding you know exactly what you're going to get. I just feel like at a wedding the main focus should be on the couple not one of the guests (whoever they are)

Am I the first person in the history of AIBU to accept that IABU? Grin

I think, if you are close enough friends with Grayson Perry to invite him to your wedding, you are wise enough to realise that he could literally rock up in absolutely anything.

My Mum would have loved to see him dressed like that at her funeral. She specified bright colours and no black and had a shocking pink hearse.
But of course if you invite Grayson Perry, you KNOW what you are going to get.

My BIL took the piss out of me because I didn't know who Mo Salah was. But he looked a little foolish when he didn't know the name of his own MP.

I really hate the idea that there is a "correct" way to dress. People should wear what the heck they want as long as it's not obscene or something.

As others have said, if you invite Mr Perry to your wedding, you know he's not going to turn up in a three piece.
