Picture of Grayson Perry at a wedding. Posted to Instagram with the caption "I am at a wedding, I didn't want to upstage the bride so went comfy and low key"

AIBU in thinking that in this outfit, upstaging the bride is exactly what he wanted to do? The comments on his post are all "Fab outfit", "You look amazing", "I bet the bride wouldn't have minded being upstaged by you" etc etc. I normally like GP but this is just so me, me, me and selfish.

Who goes to a wedding in dungarees and a hoodie? Am I just being a grump? It wouldn't be completely unheard of

Hideous outfit, but then again, if that's how he normally is, I'd assume the bride and groom knew that and expected something like it (or should have done).

foxandbee · 08/08/2021 16:08

Toomuchtodoo they are not toddler dungarees, though. They are from Lucy and Yak, so made for adults.

Monestera · 08/08/2021 16:09

You could easily dislike him for using an official engagement with small children for kicks.

What is this supposed to mean?

Toomuchtodoo · 08/08/2021 16:10

If he were a friend of mine, I'd just be relieved he didn't turn up into a better bridal gown than mine.

No matter if was wearing the best bridal gown in the world, hes a born male -
All knobbly knees, and sharp angles. no waist, no hips.
I doubt whether he could compete with a beautiful bride on HER wedding day.

Toomuchtodoo · 08/08/2021 16:13

But theyre Adult dungarees dinctha know?

omgthepain · 08/08/2021 16:15

If you invite Grayson to your wedding you have to expect something like this or even more flamboyant

I'm guessing he must be friends with bride and groom so they'd probably not have been shocked by it really

Kanaloa · 08/08/2021 16:15

It’s not just the dungarees that make it look childish it’s the overall outfit. The yellow trainers, pink frilly top, patterned hoodie. It’s an outfit more usual for a little girl than a grown man, in my opinion.

NerrSnerr · 08/08/2021 16:16

*I don't think dungarees are appropriate attire for ANYONE over the age of 2.

Wedding or otherwise.*

I think dungarees are appropriate for anyone who wants to wear them.

lljkk · 08/08/2021 16:18

I like it. He looks happy. The outfit is happy. Weddings are supposed to be happy events.

We don't know anything about the bride, do we?

I was the sort of bride who disliked the attention. I wanted a big party with all my family but me being at centre of it was pretty tough.
I wouldn't have minded at all if many people focused on oddball guests instead.

Disneycharacter · 08/08/2021 16:19

whereever he goes he upstages everyone. I'm sure the bride and groom were more than happy with him there

Echobelly · 08/08/2021 16:22

TBF, if they're inviting Grayson Perry they probably have other colourful (literally and figuratively) friends, so I imagine it's a non issue!

That's sort of the point though.
EastWestWhosBest · 08/08/2021 16:25

If you know Grayson, then you know how he dresses. It’s part of the deal.

I suggest those who don’t know who he is do a Google image search.

Yes. That’s Grayson Perry. I suggest a quick Google.
Ghosttile · 08/08/2021 16:29

If you’re going to wear floral dungarees to a wedding, I think this is a more ‘wedding guest’ appropriate print. Perhaps with a nice straw hat.

It looks like he's cos playing a toddler.

happydays2345 · 08/08/2021 16:31

You sound delightful OP.

OaxacaChihuahua · 08/08/2021 16:37

Tbh I expect if you’re friendly enough with Grayson Perry to invite him to your wedding, you probably expect and are fine with unconventional clothing.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/08/2021 16:38

*Better known for his flamboyant cross dressing than his art I would imagine.

And yes, self serving narcissist who wouldn't care what anyone thought of him, it Clare, as he wanted to be called when in a frock 😁*

Did you really just refer to a transvestite man as 'It'?????????

Kanaloa · 08/08/2021 16:40

I have now looked him up. I see this is sort of his thing. Still wouldn’t be telling him he looks ‘great,’ I just find it a bit creepy, especially the pictures of him in little girly party frocks.

Sunnysideup999 · 08/08/2021 16:40

Well his wife is a psychotherapist, so she will be aware that whilst he is saying he doesn’t want to upstage the bride - his unconscious is saying otherwise !
Classic narcissist.
It’s a ridiculous outfit for a grown man to wear on any occasion - but so long as he is happy and the bride (who presumably knows his taste) is happy, that is all that matters.
Each to their own

I’m guessing he dresses like that because he wants to, rather than because he believes he has the waist for it.
Kanaloa · 08/08/2021 16:43

And from the looks of it his ‘work’ is actually more famous for its shock value than its merit. The article I saw say his work features ‘child abduction, masturbating teddies and sweet little girls with penises hanging from their dresses.’

sst1234 · 08/08/2021 16:43

Pathetic attention seeker

NerrSnerr · 08/08/2021 16:44

If you don't like the way he dresses then don't invite him to your own wedding. I can't imagine the bride expected him to turn up in a suit and I'm guessing the bride and groom like him and wanted him to be there.

I have been to plenty of weddings where people are not wearing what is deemed as 'appropriate'. Not the end of the world.
