I thought it was a joke, a photoshop job, a hoax even but it's not.

WTF

A children's entertainer in a library with this costume?

What the hell is this?

@waterlego Thank you for explaining I have seen the issues that the LGBT community is facing on twitter with the "MAP" group declaring themselves to be part of the community much to the absolute horror of the whole community. I also agree that there is too much of the kink community trying to take over pride and it's incredibly worrying.

KilljoysDutch · 15/07/2021 00:31

Also thank you @RedDogsBeg and @MrsWooster.

NiceGerbil · 15/07/2021 02:16

@KilljoysDutch

Sorry it was posts like the following that made it seem like it was being blamed on LGBT groups.

"
FFS, normal LGB people have fought for decades to get away from the automatic ‘dodgy pedos’ insinuations.

To now have it celebrated and snuck in with all the Q+ alphabet additions is an affront. We are now expected to accept ‘nappy fetishes’ and this sick shit as part of our community."

"I accept that the 'LGBTQ+ community' does not represent many many individual who fall under these letters. Nevertheless where this is how it is branded and how it is presented and therefore is the only name for this group we have to respond to."

"I don't understand why they want the 'LGBT community' betrayed in this way. They are supposed to be just normal people. What's wrong g with getting actors in dressed as actual characters from stories to read those stories. Including characters of the opposite sex."

"And thus is the problem, we are being gaslighted into thinking we must accept this kind of deviant behaviour because it comes in rainbow colours. If you see a problem with it you are clearly not inclusive enough. Its bullshit.
I feel sorry for LGBT people who are being dragged down by this crap."

I'm sure you can agree these posts seem to act like it's the LGBT community who are to blame for this perverseness.

I read a person who is LG or B

Angry about the actions and associations of some people who fall under other letters.

And I don't blame them.

That’s exactly it @KilljoysDutch.

Dildo Monkey featured on The Last Leg tonight as part of one of their “is it ok” segments.

It wasn’t a costume hired from their company, the props department mocked it up.

It was handled amusingly, and didn’t go deep into safeguarding, but they were obviously saying that it wasn’t ok.

A good way of other people seeing the incident who may not have been aware.

nolongersurprised · 17/07/2021 02:34

It was also on an Australian commercial radio this morning with a “WTF were they thinking” slant.

Furries · 17/07/2021 03:07

@nolongersurprised - blimey, surprised this has reached Australia. Let’s hope a Skippy version doesn’t emerge!

Whooooa, really? Considering how much further down various rabbitholes they are over here, I'm quite surprised!

I take your point but I couldn't help being disappointed with their coverage of it. It was treated as a bit of a gaffe but hilarious - still, I suppose they are an entertainment programme.

Ooh excellent, I had tweeted them several times over the course of the week about it under the Is It Ok hashtag. Glad they’re paying attention!

I’ll watch it on catch up to see what they said.

Waitwhat23 · 17/07/2021 09:26

I'm possibly misremembering this but didn't The Last Leg take nominations for Glinner as Dick of the Year after massive spamming from those who object to the stance he's taken to fight for women's rights and said something about not giving him the attention?

If so, The Last Leg are being massive hypocrites to condemn this but not women's sport being essentially eliminated.

You have a better memory than I do, but I do have the impression that TLL is not gender critical. In the past when I have watched I have noticed that they have avoided any issues which have come up - and of course sometimes they haven't been doing a series when things have happened.

No, I'm afraid I don't expect any support from them. I liked the programme very much in the beginning, but less so now - a bit too patronising amongst other things.

VexedofVirginiaWater · 17/07/2021 09:47

Maybe we should tweet them about Laurel Hubbard and see if they take it up?

fairgame84 · 17/07/2021 10:06

So can I dress up in an animal costume, wear a strap on and go and dance next to the kids at the local park without getting arrested because "im an artist"?

I wouldn't even be happy for my 16yo to see that, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't want to see it either.

Furries · 17/07/2021 11:06

Oh, I didn’t know that re DOTY nomination, that’s definitely not ok.

TBF, I kind of give TLL a bit of a pass on this subject as they are a comedy show with their corner/side being disability.

I like the fact that they throw in many other items too, with obvious comedy slant, as there have been a fair number of things that have been “wtf, I didn’t know that” moments.

I don’t think Hubbard will be mentioned. Last night was the last episode. They are back in a few weeks for coverage of the paralympics.

VexedofVirginiaWater · 17/07/2021 11:07

Well yes Fairgame - apparently so. In their apology, Mandinga Arts said:

Although the monkey was well-received at carnival events with a mixed audience, it was entirely unsuitable for a children’s event and should never have been used. The monkey costume has also been retired.

Well no, the monkey costume was never suitable for carnival events with a mixed audience, because a mixed audience could include children. Before they took their website down to issue this apology, there were photos of children with people in these monkey costumes. Honestly, what were they thinking?

CaveMum · 17/07/2021 11:20

The DOTY thing was addressed by TLL. They said that they’d become aware of a mass spamming so removed Glinner as a nominee.

I did tweet them about Laurel Hubbard when it was first announced but they didn’t say anything IIRC, perhaps a mass tweeting from GC accounts during the weightlifting event might focus their minds though I know they’re not back on air till the Paralympics now.

MellieBellie · 17/07/2021 11:30

I watch the show and I vaguely remember the episode where Glinner was nominated. I got the sense that they didn't want anything to do with the issue and didn't really appreciate their award being hijacked by activists. I didn't read it as being for or against any one stance, more as resentment at a group of people who didn't watch the show trying to take something silly and turn it into a serious debate.

That was my impression at the time, but I wasn't really clued in to the issues back then so I didn't pay it much attention. When I googled it this morning, I found a Mumsnet thread. It looks like TLL were accused of transphobia because Glinner didn't win.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 17/07/2021 11:58

I suppose one way for TLL to address the Hubbard situation would be to compare it to a fully able-bodied person "identifying" as disabled to join the Paralympics instead of the Olympics - would that be acceptable? I'm not talking about those whose body dysmorphia is so severe that they actually make themselves disabled, just that they "identify" as disabled (which isn't a legal thing, I hasten to add!)

The Spanish Basketball Team at the 2000 Paralympics did this. And were stripped of their medals.

Thanks for sharing this. So, the rules for participation by someone with an intellectual disability are stricter than for competing in the women’s category of a sport.
ThumbWitchesAbroad · 17/07/2021 12:52

@IsItAKindofDream - I didn't know that, missed it! Shock

Very interesting article, @334bu - but not sure it's still relevant to the Paralympics now, is it, since they also have the Special Olympics for those with non-physical disabilities?

334bu · 17/07/2021 14:33

Just for information.
However, I was disappointed that on the Last Leg, although it was obvious that they disapproved of the event, they then went on to play it for laughs.
Nothing really funny about a man waving a fake dick in front of children and Moslim women.

MemoryGame · 21/07/2021 18:36

A quick summary of events so far, Redbridge library booked unsuitable monkey entertainment, Exeter library twitter found it amusing, it was pointed out Redbridge library had previously had Mama G teaching children to twerk, which is also not age appropriate. Today Exeter library announced Mama G is hosting an event for their summer reading challenge. WTF is going on with libraries at the moment??

A library thought it appropriate to book this 'entertainment' for children and I feel sick
