AIBU- Dog vs neighbours allergic child !

Henryhoover12 · 08/07/2021 14:45

Please can someone tell us if we’re being unreasonable or our neighbours are. We moved to a new house and really got on with our neighbours they are very lovely and we spend lots of time speaking to them. We mentioned that we were purchasing a dog In which they had mortified looks on their faces and explained their DC is extremely allergic to dogs (e.g can’t be in class with anyone who owns a dog etc has been in hospital) we kind of brushed it off and said we can speak about it closer to the time.

After that everytime we bumped into them they kept asking if we “changed our minds” which we found so awkward but in the end we told them not getting a dog wasn’t an option is we have always wanted one but are happy to work things out so it’s safe for their child. They took this badly and didn’t speak to us for a while. Closer to us picking up the dog we went around and asked what they would like us to do to ensure safety for their child.

One of the (long list of) rules was that we didn’t let the dog out while their child was in the garden. This seemed fine at the time until we realised their child is ALWAYS in the garden. And I mean always they have a little treehouse type thing that they play in so come rain and sunshine they are out there. At first we tried to play ball like if our dog wanted to wee we would walk him to the park 10 minutes but now it’s just getting ridiculous so we have started letting him go to wee when it’s raining outside because we really can’t be asked to walk 20 minutes just for that. The last time we did the mum came our and shouted at me saying I’m going to kill her child. AIBU to think that our dog has every much right to use our garden as the child? Our poor dog loves to be outside but is trapped inside because of this and I’m starting to think it’s really unfair

Oh my this is the most unhinged thing I’ve ever read! Please op, do not disappear I need to know how it ends. I’m firmly in #TeamOp

This thread is filling up at a rate of 200 messages/hour. OP: we need a diagram before MNHQ hit the nuke button you go !! Please explain graphically how close your doggo out for walks gets to their property without being closer than the banned automobiles would be placed.
Be as inventive as you like 🍿 🍿 🍿 🍿

If she reads this she will 100% already know it's about her. You might as well share the list.

She has no right to tell you how to live your life. She needs to put up higher fences.

Womencanlift · 08/07/2021 20:27

Only read your posts OP but I do think YABU. They did tell you the situation and then you went ahead anyway so that is probably why you are getting treated like enemy number one.

If they had moved in after you then I would have some sympathy with you but that’s not what has happened here

It may be controversial but I do think the risk of a child being seriously ill will always trump having a dog.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 08/07/2021 20:27

BTW - be careful that they don't try to take matters into their own hands, and put stuff into your garden that will affect your dog.

Some people are (excuse the pun) bliddy barking!

Doghead · 08/07/2021 20:28

I'm beginning to wonder whether the neighbours hoped one of their family would buy the house.....and maybe they couldn't afford it or missed out on it for another reason. Maybe they're hoping if they make things extremely difficult for the OP that the OP will sell up and their relative can jump in (possibly at a reduced price) .

What?

Nobody can have a pet if a neighbour objects?

Don't talk soft!

Katkinsgreyy · 08/07/2021 20:29

Nah they're being stupid.

It's not your problem that their kid has an allergy. Unless the kid is locked away forever, chances are they will come in to contact with a dog at some point in their life.

There is no risk of the child being seriously ill from the dog being in its garden
piefacedClique · 08/07/2021 20:30

I think the neighbour has joined us?! 🤔

FantasticButtocks · 08/07/2021 20:31

Or the fact the kid is in the garden from 5am screaming and playing in her little park but we don’t say anything when that wakes us up

5am? Hmm

Op, did you watch the documentary about the child with a severe dog allergy?

I could agree with you but I am not going to because I don't

Husband has just come back, neighbours husband was talking the bins out and didn’t comment on him parking (and moving both cars) on the drive. He said just general conversation about football match….

maybe its Mrs who is batshit?

Bargebill19 · 08/07/2021 20:34

Well that says to me the neighbours wife is the problem. Nothing else.

Stick to your guns op.

Henryhoover12 · 08/07/2021 20:35

Surprised by the husbands reaction as he was always the one who would ask us if we had changed our minds when it came to buying a dog and he was more the vocal of the two

No I haven’t watched the dog documentary but I might contact them for a spin off😂

No way a school could conceivably police a no dog rule.

Park the sodding car and get the dog out the side opposite their car.

Let the dog run the the garden, line the boundary fence with solid 6ft high panel boards if you really feel the need.

I could understand the objection to a cat if she had a cat allergy, but the dogs going nowhere near her.

You would be best to read the thread before jumping to conclusions and making a post which, to be quite honest, is rather stupid.

The crazy neighbours have a whole list of rules which OP has been obeying and seemingly before a dog even came into the situation.

There is a 6ft fence and a hedge between the gardens so very very very very unlikely that dog hair or whatever will go into their garden or anywhere near the child.

The child goes to school but apparently the school has a rule that NO ONE who goes their - pupils, staff, workmen etc can have a dog or ever visit anyone who has a dog! Absolute garbage

Bargebill19 · 08/07/2021 20:38

Op are you sure the reason they didn’t want you to have the dog, is not allergies, but that they don’t want a dog and their child does. The more your is out of sight, the less the child begs for a dog ….

Not saying there aren’t allergies - just not dog ones.

Zippy1510 · 08/07/2021 20:41

If the child is school age why can’t your dog be in the garden whilst they are at school and then not in the garden when they are home?

TalkingOutYerArse · 08/07/2021 20:41

Great. Keep parking on your drive and letting the dog enjoy your garden when they need it. Your neighbour does not own your drive, your garden or your house. Enough is enough. Absolutely batshit that they think they could control all of this!!!! Not your responsibility.

Henryhoover12 · 08/07/2021 20:41

Again the child is not home schooled, she does go to school but the parents have mentioned the strict rules in place to protect her. They did tell us but again we tried to shut the conversation down as we knew it was heading down the route of telling us not to get a dog

I have also seen the child in school uniform.

However recently the child has been in the garden all day everyday which might mean they’ve chosen to home school her, I just put it down to the pandemic but other schools have gone back.

They can't dictate what you (or your dog) do in your own garden. If they are that concerned about their DC then they can move. I would be suggesting that the next time they complain.

Bargebill19 · 08/07/2021 20:42

Solution - child goes outside in a zorb ball.
Child safe and you get to use your garden/drive/car and everything else batty neighbour banned.
