Have you had period oddness since the COVID vaccine?

If you have any kind of changes with your periods following the vaccine, could you take a few minutes to report them (via the admittedly slightly clunky NHS Yellow Card system).

I'm 51 and following my AZ vaccine, had my first bleed in 2 years after menopause.
(And it was pretty horrendous).

If you've experienced any changes to your periods following your vaccine, would you consider reporting?

Many women put up with so much as 'just one of those things' - it would be really helpful to get the true picture.

Thank you.

I’ve had both jabs (First in Jan then second in April) and no change to my periods since

Ohmygoshandfolly · 24/06/2021 12:01

Had Pfizer 2 weeks ago and no side effects whatsoever, period came last week as it usually would and was no different to usual. The only side effect I had was a sore arm, I expected to feel terrible after things I’d heard but nope.

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 24/06/2021 12:18

Really pleased that not everyone has had issues 👍

And for clarity, I would still have had the vaccine even if I had have known the possibility of bleeding, but would have liked to be aware.

34 and had the AZ. My cycles had just returned to normal following a miscarriage at the end if 2020. First vaccine dose my period arrived early, was extremely light( I have notoriously heavy flows and take medication for it) and lasted nearly two weeks, my periods on wards were very irregular with short cycles, long but light period. We have been TTC so I religiously chart ovulation. The month after my first dose I don't believe I ovulated. The following month ovulation was extremely late and my period came less than a week later.

Exactly the same pattern has followed after my 2nd dose with my cycles still irregular. It's made ttc more of a nightmare when we've been struggling already. I didn't really like any of the changes to my vaccine until the 2nd dose, I did speak to my GP after the changes initially but this was dismissed as my body still settling after the MC at the end of 2020 but I know my cycles had returned to normal before my first dose.

Frustrating not being heard or listened to by medical professionals when it comes to women only issues

Awalkintime · 24/06/2021 13:08

Mine is the opposite, period issues had ultrasounds, transvaginal scans etc but all this before my vaccine yet after having suspected covid at the beginning.

beautifullymad · 24/06/2021 13:17

Yes. AZ and very on and off. Historically I've only ever once missed a period and that was after trauma. But now it's a bit pot luck as to dates and duration and if it arrives at all.
I'm double vaccinated since early April.

letsgotrilobite · 24/06/2021 13:26

Hard to tell. My periods are usually a bit irregular and I have long cycles. I had Pfizer last month, ovulated a lot earlier than normal and had a chemical pregnancy.
I hadn't put it down to the vaccine, it's happened before pre-vaccine so no way of knowing.

onlyjustme · 24/06/2021 13:45

I posted on the other thread too.
Yellow-carded my reaction after reading that (thanks Mumsnet).
I had AZ and despite being having a mirena I have actually had a few "periods" since the vaccine. Not bad but a bit annoying. The coil is nowhere near due for replacement yet.
It was the thread that made me consider that there may be a link between the vaccine and my "periods"...

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 24/06/2021 14:42

DD20 had pfizer and has had the most horrific menstrual like cramps she has ever had. (not on her period)
I don't know if it will wreak habit on her cycle-she is on the pill so that remains to be seen.

She submitted a yellow card.

Eventually called 111 after a few days as it was unbearable.

She was given codine which she is taking sparingly.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 24/06/2021 14:43

*and she would have had the vaccine regardless.

CookPassBabtridge · 24/06/2021 14:44

Yes a week late after having pfizer.
Period should have started 2 weeks after having it but was 3.

hellogem · 24/06/2021 15:43

I've heard of women having delayed/heavy periods.
Also read if you had the vaccine during or just before ovulation, it's normal for period to be delayed or bleed slightly heavier.

I had my first dose of vaccine and had my period on time, and perfectly normal. My vaccine was after ovulation (I track my ovulation)

DoThePropeller · 24/06/2021 19:13

I had my second dose on 11th May followed by a normal period quite soon after, this next period though has been longer and heavier and I’m spotting for seven days which has never happened to me before. I’ve yellow carded but hadn’t considered it being a vaccine reaction until this post!

GeordieRacer · 24/06/2021 19:18

Oh this is interesting to read. I had the same symptoms for a few cycles after having Covid itself last year. Don't seem to have had any repeat of the symptoms after my first Pfizer jab

Ingridla · 24/06/2021 19:31

Yes but they're back to normal now. It's just temporary.

Saoirse82 · 24/06/2021 19:50

Mother in law is 52, going through the menopause and is on HRT patches. After her 2nd AZ jab was she crippled for a week with pain after her period came back after a 18 month hiatus. She thought it was the patches and has refused to wear them since, then was convinced she had cancer as she's still spotting 2 weeks later (she has health anxiety.) I was pleased to be able to tell her that its highly likely the vaccine caused this because she has been worried about it.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 24/06/2021 20:03

I initially thought I might after having Covid, but they came regularly as clockwork for three months and then went a bit weird, missing a couple, then very heavy, then very light, etc. They then settled back down and went weird again after the first vaccine dose, getting much lighter and more like normal after the second.

Well, that's what I thought. Then I looked up the last six year's history where I'd tracked them and promptly forgotten about the details as I didn't believe there were any issues. Turns out that the regular as clockwork ones I thought I was having were just as erratic in frequency, duration and flow, if not more so, in the years beforehand.

I'm not Yellow Carding my selective memory and I suspect that a fair proportion of these reports are from women who also thought everything was normal beforehand but have now been brought around to think that there's a noticeable change after vaccination; the cliche 'Anecdote is not data' applies to menstrual changes as much as any yellow card events including being bitten by a insect, sneezing eight times on a Sunday, twisting an ankle or 'going grey' realising that time has passed since the the hairdressers had to close for the best part of a year would do.

Why in God's name would you do that to her? That falls under the description of post menopausal bleeding, a known symptom of cancer. Even if it were to be due to the vaccine, she must go to the doctor and get it checked out first as an urgent/2WW referral - as if she doesn't do anything about it, turns out to have cancer and dies of it, your happy reassurance could turn out to be the thing that kills her.
PurpleyBlue · 24/06/2021 20:07

It says to report it even if you aren't sure if it's a side effect. They will investigate if there's a causal link.

AbitSceptical · 24/06/2021 20:13

I've always been like clockwork with menstruation - 28 day cycle, 4 day bleed for 30 years. Until COVID.

The vaccine triggered an early, light but long duration period, then I've had a mega long cycle followed by a normal-ish period. Now due to have second dose.

I am cross about the lack of research about the vaccine effects on women... and have yellow carded thanks to this thread.

Interestingly, this happened before... I had exactly the same symptoms in March 2020 when I got COVID itself (or think I did - there were no tests available then). It took me about 3 months to get back to normal. I chart my cycles and am sure these things are related.

I searched about COVID affecting menstruation about this time last year and couldn't find much about it...

rosie1959 · 24/06/2021 20:16

Just realised whilst reading this most of my menopause symptoms have disappeared over the time I have had both vaccinations Coincidence who knows but a bonus

eandz13 · 24/06/2021 20:24

I did some Googling after reading this thread and found this article

www.channel4.com/news/factcheck/factcheck-do-covid-vaccines-affect-periods

It's irritated me a bit. IMO there's a pretty clear link.

Roonerspismed · 24/06/2021 20:33

Absolute LOL at that fact checker - that the MHRA is good at finding serious effects. It bloody well missed the clotting issue and it was another regulator that found it

Am I the only person who finds these fact checkers irritatingly patronising?

eandz13 · 24/06/2021 20:34

@Roonerspismed nope, definitely not just you!
