Have you had period oddness since the COVID vaccine?

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 23/06/2021 20:13

If you have any kind of changes with your periods following the vaccine, could you take a few minutes to report them (via the admittedly slightly clunky NHS Yellow Card system).

I'm 51 and following my AZ vaccine, had my first bleed in 2 years after menopause.
(And it was pretty horrendous).

If you've experienced any changes to your periods following your vaccine, would you consider reporting?

Many women put up with so much as 'just one of those things' - it would be really helpful to get the true picture.

Thank you.

Not me (but I have the coil so don't bleed anyway). My friend however said her period was 2 weeks late

inpixiehollow · 24/06/2021 01:01

I was 5 weeks pregnant when I had my 1st AZ vaccine. A few days later I had an episode of bleeding and another a week or so after. I never bled with my previous pregnancy and baby was fine (now 19 weeks nearly) so only now connecting that it might be related.

eachtigertires · 24/06/2021 01:22

Oh weird! Didn’t know this was a thing. I had no change to my periods after my first Pfizer vaccination (I haven’t had a period since Feb 2020, pregnant then BFing) so I will have to watch out for a change after my second one which will be in September.

Acousticroyal · 24/06/2021 02:01

I have endometriosis, period is usually painful, heavy and a week long. Both AZ vaccines have resulted in a late, light and almost pain free period following jab and my cycles are now short instead of long. Not sure if I'm ovulating anymore, it used to hurt and be very symptomatic but now nothing.

Acousticroyal · 24/06/2021 02:03

To add, I wouldn't have had the AZ vaccination if I was TTC or considering TTC in the near future, especially not after reading this thread.

Lizzie523 · 24/06/2021 02:08

I had Pfizer and mine is 5 days late.

Looubylou · 24/06/2021 02:51

Yes, my period was 2 weeks early, then I returned to normal. Pszeir, I did not link the 2 at the time. This had never happened before in 40 years of having periods. I wondered if I was menopausal, but I show no other signs, and periods are normal now. I was in first groups to get vaccine, as Frontline NHS, so this was months ago.

isettled · 24/06/2021 03:32

I almost started a thread asking similar the other day. I had first dose Pfizer 3 weeks ago period was 5 days late which never happens. It's also much heavier/more clots than usual and the stomach cramps are unbelievable (hence why i'm awake at 3am). I had no idea this could be reported but i now have and will keep monitoring.

Bingbongbooo · 24/06/2021 06:31

I yellow carded mine yesterday after reading this. First az vaccine caused my period to arrive the next day, which wasa week early, and I'm not irregular. 2nd and 3rd periods since have been late and also have an extended period of spotting after, last month after the 2nd jab I was bleeding for 12 days. Never happened before in my life. I'm 33 so nowhere near menopause yet

CatsGoPurrrr · 24/06/2021 07:03

AZ. First vaccination hideous flu symptoms. Second vaccination, started spotting a day or so after. Still spotting yet also getting usual pre-menstrual symptoms and expecting period to start next week.

Emmylou1985 · 24/06/2021 07:19

I had the Pfizer vaccine. I came on 3 days after my first jab, which was two weeks earlier than I should have. It was quite a bit heavier than my normal flow and there were more cramps and just general tiredness than usual (for me). Since then I've had no issues, even after the second vaccine.

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 24/06/2021 07:23

@Roonerspismed

My friend hasn’t yellow carded but has had two week periods on and off since her first jab- very heavy and flooding. Normally regular. SIL has had much longer cycles. My own sister has had missed cycles since hers.

No wonder this was missed in the trial. It would have been dismissed.

Now you've said this, @Roonerspismed , that makes perfect sense.

We are so used to putting up with period irregularities that maybe the testers didn't even think to report (if indeed there were enough menstruating women in the trials).

I’ve just realised I had a shockingly heavy and painful period after jab 1 too and didn’t make the connection.

And now I’m 6 days and counting late

Really am quite cross about this, why are women continually dismissed in this way???

You poor thing, @isettled - you have my sympathy.

I also got enormous PMT symptoms with my period, which I have had for YEARS.

I've yellow carded yesterday. Mines normally clockwork and it came 5 days early after both 1st & 2nd AZ.

Rhayader · 24/06/2021 07:40

I reported it at the time but I was 10 days early (3 days after Pfizer)

yellowDahlia · 24/06/2021 07:47

Had a mid-cycle bleed the day after my 1st AZ jab, although didn't notice it was any different in length/flow to a usual period. And the next one was more or less back to correct timings. I did report it on the yellow card system and also got hormones checked with the GP as was worried about peri menopause (was also a bit anxious and generally feeling low at the time) but results seemed normal. Mood is still all over the place but I'm blaming the general pandemic and not just the vaccine!

I've got the 2nd jab in a couple of weeks, will be watching with interest to see if it happens again...

MrsBobBlackadder · 24/06/2021 08:51

This is interesting - I've had the mirena coil for eight months. It was going really well, just a bit of spotting but my previously extremely heavy periods were nowhere to be seen.

I had my second AZ dose at the start of June - yesterday morning I woke up to gushing bleeding and the coil has fallen out 😩 will definitely report. Feeling super sorry for myself today 😟

LibbyL92 · 24/06/2021 09:04

Has anybody spoken to their doctor about this?

I’m now really concerned it’s happening to so many people, including myself.

Not to sound dramatic but I haven’t had any children yet, was going to start trying end of next year...

BarbedBloom · 24/06/2021 09:10

I reported mine. After first pfizer jab I didn't get my period for almost 2 months and then bled for 3 weeks when I am normally 3 days. Just had the second so not looking forward to that

HelenHywater · 24/06/2021 09:24

I've reported mine now. But in fact have seen a private gynaecologist because I was concerned. I'm now worried this is all connect to the jab rather than health related.

Biking0077 · 24/06/2021 09:31

Four days after the 1st AZ I Had a 3-day migraine felt hormonal actually vomited like you feel with morning sickness but as I’ve got a new coil didn’t bleed particularly much but felt rough has hell. Not looking forward to the 2nd in a couple of weeks time. I’m late 40s on HRT and was slightly concerned how I would react but when I didn’t in the first 3days thought I’d got away with it!

Symptoms after the second are usually much milder with AZ, Moderna and Pfizer seem to be the ones that are the opposite.
DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 24/06/2021 11:58

@LibbyL92 - I spoke to my GP at the time who referred me straight away to a specialist, as is normal with any post-me menopause bleeding.

This was February though - i would hope that GPs may be aware of possible links now (although investigations still needed as who could be sure?).
