To want us not to wear shoes in the house?

NCShoes · 17/06/2021 20:15

As soon as I walk through the door, I take my shoes off and put slippers on. My partner on the other hand will wear shoes throughout the whole house, and doesn't really take them off until going to bed.

It drives me mad but if I mention anything it can turn into an argument and it's just me 'moaning'. But I hate the thought of walking around outside then walking through the house, on the carpet etc.

The carpet is only a couple of years old and is already looking a bit crap so we're going to get it cleaned but then I think 'what's the point when you're still going to be wearing shoes all around the house?'
Am I being a bit moany?

YABU.

This is one of the single biggest issues any couple needs to decide before moving in together. And by ‘decide’ I mean ‘read all the 150,000 previous MN threads on the subject’ before throwing your phone out of the window and moving somewhere with wooden floors.

berylandcynthia · 17/06/2021 20:21

YANBU..can he not wear slippers?

Moonshine11 · 17/06/2021 20:21

Yeah your being abit moany to me

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 17/06/2021 20:22

If you buy him slippers will he wear them? My DP used to hate the idea of wearing slippers- would just walk around in socks but I bought him some and he couldn't understand why he'd never had any before.

ScottishNewbie · 17/06/2021 20:23

We don't wear shoes. My Fiance and his family did. I said I didn't like it, it was no big deal, so in our home, everyone takes shoes off.
When we visit them, my Fiance takes them off now even though he doesn't have to because he's realised it's just nicer and cleaner.

No. Doesn't like slippers and wouldn't wear them.

No, I've said before about wearing slippers but they won't wear them.

Some households are "shoes on", some are "shoes off". There inevitably has to be a conversion from one to another if a couple get together with differing preferences. I come from a "shoes on" household. DH very much does not, and unfortunately has inherited his mother's overprotectiveness about all soft furnishings. I've made the switch because I'm nice like that, plus he'd be a moany fucker if I didn't and I prefer a quiet life.

I think it's worth saying to your DH though that you don't think there's any point in getting the carpet cleaned if he's going to keep wearing shoes. Might give him pause for though. I must admit that although I find "shoes off" a bit of a pain in the arse, it does mean the floors are cleaner with far less effort Grin

idontlikealdi · 17/06/2021 20:29

I am shoes off person, I hate wearing them, I hate slippers. The first thing I do is take of my shoes when I get in. Flip flops are my go to from March to November.

Best mate is the opposite, sits on her sofa with trainers on and it makes me feel rather odd.

It's not a germ thing but a comfort thing for me.

SwayingInTime · 17/06/2021 20:29

My husband has indoor shoes. Like inexpensive supermarket trainers instead of slippers basically. He is still more relaxed than me about shoes inside, for me and DCs it’s a reflex to remove shoes, but changes to indoor shoes within ten minutes. He does walk through to the back door to access back gate to wheel his bike to the garden in his outdoor shoes but I have learned to pick my battles!

UhtredRagnarson · 17/06/2021 20:29

I’m with you Op. but my Dc don’t agree and the (rightfully) point out that our dog wears her outside footwear inside too Grin

😂 I don't want to be the moany fucker in this scenario but I must sound like one. Even if friends come round to the house (especially when we first moved in and they wanted a look around the house) the friends would say just before heading upstairs 'would you like me to take my shoes off?' And i'd say 'yes please' at the same time as my partner would say 'no, it's alright'.

How about 'inside' trainers that aren't worn outside?

Bluntness100 · 17/06/2021 20:33

I’m shoes off, so I’m with you, and I make my husband take his off too, as he walks round the garden rhen drags dirt in,,,,but I never ask guests to.

This is something we tried, with a cheap pair of trainers. It lasted about a week. But now these trainers are being worn when walking the dog, taking the bins out etc and then back in the house again so it seems like it was a bit pointless.

What about shoe covers? I've seen a device where you put your shoe in and the cover goes on automatically. Otherwise, you can buy a bundle of covered from amazon really cheap. They are similar to a shower cap.

And if I mention about getting another pair for that purpose it'll probably lead to an argument.

What about crocs? Would he wear crocs in the house? He won’t be tempted to wear them out to walk the dog…. Or would he? Grin

TomorrowIsAnotherDae · 17/06/2021 20:36

Shoes off in my house. There is shit, piss, blood, puke, whatever, trod into the streets where I live - the thought of treading the remnants of all sorts of crap around my home makes me 🤢

PussInBin20 · 17/06/2021 20:36

No you’re not. I became more aware of not bringing dirt in on our shoes when we had our DD. I just wanted her to be able to crawl around on “clean” carpets. Luckily my DH agreed.

We bought a carpet cleaner back in February and you should see the muck that comes out of the carpets and this is with taking shoes off, so I dread to think what it would be like with them on!

Plus it makes them look and last longer. I hate wasting money.

I think if I suggested this they'd go mad! We do have those for whenever we have workmen in.

YANBU
I honestly don’t get it…. there’s piss, shit, blood, phlegm etc on the roads and pavements. My MIL partner walked dog poo all throughout her house last month.
Your carpets will last longer, look better and it’s cleaner, if you remove your shoes.
Carpets and shoes = dirty, if he refuses I’d get wooden flooring- which will still get dirty, but at least it’s easier to clean!

Exactly. I was thinking the same - carpets get dirty enough already. Plus if we had children I'd hate them to be crawling around on a dirty floor.
