To want us not to wear shoes in the house?

NCShoes · 17/06/2021 20:15

As soon as I walk through the door, I take my shoes off and put slippers on. My partner on the other hand will wear shoes throughout the whole house, and doesn't really take them off until going to bed.

It drives me mad but if I mention anything it can turn into an argument and it's just me 'moaning'. But I hate the thought of walking around outside then walking through the house, on the carpet etc.

The carpet is only a couple of years old and is already looking a bit crap so we're going to get it cleaned but then I think 'what's the point when you're still going to be wearing shoes all around the house?'
Am I being a bit moany?

I fucking hate it when people wear shoes inside.
Why? Just why?
I couldn't relax if I was sat on my sofa wearing shoes.
And dont even get me started on dirt and germs being brought in...

TheKeatingFive · 19/06/2021 12:18

I fucking hate it when people wear shoes inside.

In your house, or their own house?

If the latter, why do you care? It’s absolutely nothing to you.

moofolk · 19/06/2021 12:18

YANBU.

Shoes on inside is minging. And him
Wearing shoes inside while you don't makes it even more minging for you as his outdoor ming goes straight to your feet. Urgh.

Also agree with PPs about saying if he doesn't then all the floor cleaning is solely his responsibility.

You're absolutely right, what you do in your own filth hovel is your own business!

Cool. And I can say the same for you. Wink

Annehedonia · 19/06/2021 14:51

Not really as I don't drag street filth through mine.

But each to their own.

TheKeatingFive · 19/06/2021 14:55

Sweat/dead skin/bacteria

As you say, each to his own.

Annehedonia · 19/06/2021 14:56

I keep my feet nice and clean so no issues there

TheKeatingFive · 19/06/2021 14:59

Your guests?

TheKeatingFive · 19/06/2021 14:59

And the soles of our shoes are checked as we walk in and brushed on the mat, so no issues there either. Smile

Annehedonia · 19/06/2021 15:00

I already said I don't make guests remove shoes, that would be rude.

But I do cringe when they wear outdoor shoes on my carpets. It's filthy.

TheKeatingFive · 19/06/2021 15:01

Very glad we agree on something then

Annehedonia · 19/06/2021 15:09

My Muslim friends ask me to remove my shoes when I visit.

It's a cleanliness thing for them.

I'm only too happy to oblige of course.

Panaesthesia · 19/06/2021 16:03

It's totally disgusting, but unfortunately he is a Shoes in the House person. They are very hard to change. The only thing you can do is not marry them, or date them, and especially don't live with them. Because now congratulations, you've got a lifetime of dogshit carpets!

........and our Muslim friends and my Muslim staff don't. It is a personal decision and influence of social norms amongst people you mix with.
Annehedonia · 19/06/2021 16:07

@LemonRoses
Of course, where did I claim ALL Muslim people do this? I was just pointing out that it's considered a cleanliness thing by many people of varying cultures.

Macncheeseballs · 19/06/2021 16:28

I own a hoover so doesn't really bother me

TheKeatingFive · 19/06/2021 16:31

Honestly, the drama lamas on here. 😂

I’ve lived in shoes off houses all my life and never once had shit on my carpets.

PattyPan · 19/06/2021 16:41

I don’t think hoovering is good enough to get carpets clean if you are wearing shoes to be honest, it would have to be regular steam cleaning.

BadLad · 19/06/2021 16:45

Shoes off in our houses. No exceptions at all. My wife is Japanese, and wearing shoes into her house is one thing Japanese people make no allowance for at all.

In other people's houses, I do as they do.

....and I was just pointing out that lumping people together into homologous, stereotypical cohorts with the same norms is an issue. Religion is not the reason most people are choosing to take their shoes off. Its irrelevant.

To be fair she did say 'my Muslim friends', not 'Muslims take them off for cleanliness'. It's perfectly possible that her Muslim friends do it for cleanliness. Mumsnet has a habit of misconstruing people's words.

skybluee · 19/06/2021 17:14

The last time one of my friends visited here he walked a load of mud through the hall and lounge. It stood out on the pale carpet and it was difficult to clean afterwards. I didn't say anything but I don't know why I'd want to repeat that for myself! So I take shoes off at the door. There's all kinds of mud, leaves etc all over the floor outside. I don't want that inside. The only reason the carpet is still OK is from taking shoes off at the door. I think it would be a mess otherwise. Aside from that, the lounge feels really clean. I don't think it would feel like that - to me - if I'd walked around it in outdoor shoes, especially in winter when they're sometimes wet, etc.

londonscalling · 19/06/2021 18:12

If he doesn't want to wear slippers, what's wrong with your husband just taking his shoes off and walking around in his socks?

Blossomtoes · 19/06/2021 19:31

That’s why we have our carpets professionally cleaned every year.
