To want us not to wear shoes in the house?

245 replies

NCShoes · 17/06/2021 20:15

As soon as I walk through the door, I take my shoes off and put slippers on. My partner on the other hand will wear shoes throughout the whole house, and doesn't really take them off until going to bed.

It drives me mad but if I mention anything it can turn into an argument and it's just me 'moaning'. But I hate the thought of walking around outside then walking through the house, on the carpet etc.

The carpet is only a couple of years old and is already looking a bit crap so we're going to get it cleaned but then I think 'what's the point when you're still going to be wearing shoes all around the house?'
Am I being a bit moany?

@Blossomtoes I’d be doing it more like weekly, same as mopping the floor!

What do you think would happen if people do it less?

Blossomtoes · 19/06/2021 20:02

I mop my kitchen and loo floors daily - weekly is absolutely disgusting. I also hoover downstairs every day. Our carpets are immaculate so we’re obviously not totally filthy.

StoneofDestiny · 19/06/2021 20:32

It's pretty unusual for people to get their trousers dragged through dog shit, dog piss, muck, spit, remains of takeaway etc - shoes on the other hand can walk through this and shoes with treads can bring in quite a lot and decant it onto the carpets.

Perhaps in microscopic quantities that make no impact.

I can’t get very worked up about it personally.

Harder to clean because it would build up?

It's interesting reading this thread. Some posters mention they find the dirt dragged in on shoes minuscule, others find it a lot. I'm in the second camp, if someone walks into my house with shoes on, my floors become really dirty and darken. It doesn't matter if it's just DH feeling lazy and bringing the shop in straight to the kitchen, his shoes leave marks (on laminate flooring), sometimes just dusty shoe prints. I notice just how much because I wash my floors by hand with a washcloth or wipes. The same with my kitchen tiles. This is on dry days, on wet rainy days, forget it. So sooo much dirt brought in and muddy footprints. I wonder if it's all a difference of perception or whether some people just don't bring that much dirt in (I don't understand why they wouldn't but maybe locality/ climate could affect this).

Rosewood017 · 19/06/2021 22:44

We're a shoes off house. DH took a while to get on board and then too lazy to put shoes on to go in the garden. He trampled mud & squished berries in from his socks. He couldn't get them out of the carpet and has learnt now.

Our children play on the floor and we do encourage visitors to take shoes off. FIL thinks it absurd and refuses!

BlueBellsArePretty · 19/06/2021 23:04

YANBU
We used to wear our shoes in the house but at the beginning of the pandemic we started taking them off at the door. Just didn't like the idea of the soles of our shoes that were in contact with floors/ground that people might have sneezed or coughed on being in contact with the floors in our home. Wearing slippers means I don't have to sweep and mop as often 🤣

WingingItSince1973 · 19/06/2021 23:13

Shoes off house here and friends and family are the same. Actually makes me feel quite gippy taking shoes all around the house. Our pavements can get quite disgusting around here. Dog mess, spit, other gross things. Just no!

CrazyCatLover · 19/06/2021 23:46

Totally with you OP. Makes me cringe when I see people with outdoor shoes on in their houses.

NCShoes · 20/06/2021 08:53

We have decided to invest in some sliders. Hopefully this will solve the problem 😂

@EL8888

No worries then, he can pay for the new carpet if he doesn’t want to look after it. Let me guess, he doesn’t clean the floors either?
😂 To be fair, we both do clean the floor probably the same amount so I can't say anything about that.

@Bella43

I totally agree with you OP. He could have dog's mess on them. My father in law did this once. Walked all through our house with dog's mess on his shoes. He even went upstairs to use the bathroom before he came in properly (I was in the kitchen). Therefore I had to clean the stairs carpet, landing, the bathroom floor then start on living room carpet and finally mop the kitchen. He didn't even realise he'd done it until I said what's that smell? His shoes were caked in it. He'd stepped in it in the street. The smell was horrendous.
Oh god that's awful. I'd hate that. Would take ages to properly clean as well. Especially in the carpet!

@TheKeatingFive

I take mine off whenever I go into someone's house

Please don’t do this in my house, I find feet pretty disgusting myself.

Even if people are wearing socks?

@inmyslippers

I'd be filing for divorce
😂😂 Now that would cost a fortune!

@actiongirl1978

We have two dogs, two children and live in the country. Flagstone floors everywhere downstairs except the sitting room. Neither of us came from shoes off houses thank goodness. I do get a bit twitchy when DH walks upstairs into bedroom to read a DC story after being on tube and train and he lies on the bed with his shoes on, but that's my only problem.

We keep shoes wherever we take them off.

Oddly both DC take shoes off when they get home, though don't wear slippers.

I hate slippers, cant do the housework in them so I just make sure my shoes don't have chicken poo on them before I come inside.

Yes shoes on the bed I don't like either, although that's very rare. We do have part of the house with stone floor as well which is harder to clean really. I have to wear slippers on that because it's bloody freezing!

@OrangeRug

YANBU. I'd go mental if my partner wore shoes in the house. All shoes come off at the door. It's absolutely scruffy wearing outdoor shoes on indoor carpets. I always politely ask guests to remove their shoes too (unless its my GPIL since they have mobility issues but I try to make sure we visit them at their place instead).
Same here. If people are going upstairs for any reason, usually they ask me 'would you like me to take them off?' Because they're walking onto the carpet. But I wouldn't ask my nana, not that she could walk up the stairs, but she keeps her shoes on when she comes and I'd never ask her to remove them.

@CousinKrispy

I prefer not to wear shoes in the house, but due to my flat feet and a lot of foot pain, I now have to wear trainers at all times instead of walking around in socks/nonsupportive slippers. I am pretty good about sticking to indoor trainers/outdoor trainers but even I can't be arsed unlacing and relacing sometimes.

Probably none of that is relevant to your situation, sorry ...

I totally get that. I have a friends with the same issue so she keeps hers on too.

I take my shoes off as soon as I'm in the front door. DP usually manages it at some point once he's about to walk on the rug rather than hard floors, but he's been driving his mother crazy since he was a child for coming in off the moor with mud, grass, pebbles, horse and sheep shit on his shoes and walking through the cottage oblivious to the mess he's causing.

I grew up in a place where you kept your shoes on unless you wanted to risk cuts, black socks and probably a serious infection from whatever was festering in the scraps of carpet or lino.

So I went for hard floors everywhere except the stairs, landing and big rugs in the bedroom and living room. It's much easier to clean.

My non negotiables are shoes off before you enter the living room or bedroom. And indoor shoes on before cooking or DIY. Still catch him having a nap in bed with his work clothes and boots on from time to time, but that has reduced since he's found out a) how much the bedlinen will cost him to replace if he rips it and b) he will be remaking the bed with clean linen before I go to bed that night.
