Friends’ anti-semitism

We have known a couple for 4 years from our NCT group. We have gone to baby groups, soft play, birthdays and bbqs with them. We have never socialised with them without the kids or wider group but thought we knew them quite well. They have always been lovely. One of the couple has a high up position in the Labour Party and while we don’t support Labour this has never been an issue.

This week, while discussing the conflict in Israel/Palestine one of the couple wrote on FB that the Jews were responsible for 9/11. My husband is a non practicing Jew and we have a traditionally Jewish surname. Not that this matters. Their comments are so upsetting, I challenged them on FB asking if they were serious but they did not respond.

Here is the dilemma:
We are due to go to an NCT reunion party in a month and now I don’t want to go. I love our NCT group but I cannot imagine socialising with people who think this way.

YABU: go to the reunion
YANBU: stay away

@Undeuxdrei he was commenting back and forth on the thread. The thread was 4 days ago. He has posted family pictures on FB since then. He has not been hacked. I wish he had.

My problem is the wholesale desire to destroy a life on the word of some anon.

Cadent · 21/05/2021 10:22

So you’ve had 4 days to delete and block them?!

What is the dilemma in not doing so?

ddl1 · 21/05/2021 10:22

That's disgusting. This should be reported to the Labour party, as pp have said.

I would agree with not socializing with this couple on an individual level, but I would think it a pity to boycott the NCT reunion just because of one couple. It would be letting them win, in a way.

deragod · 21/05/2021 10:22

@Undeuxdrei

Well, antisemitism and the Labour? Nah, hacking no needed.

Propagandalf · 21/05/2021 10:22

I couldn't be worked up about this tbh.

Go to the reunion, be friends, and away from religion.

Religion is counter-productive. It causes arguments and wars.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 21/05/2021 10:23

Screen shot & report to the LP.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 21/05/2021 10:23

Tell us who it is????

deragod · 21/05/2021 10:26

@Propagandalf

Judaism is a religion, being a Jew is ethnicity.
So it's like saying stop being black if you mind being raciali abuse.

I don't understand your point. If the couple in question have not actually posted anything anti-Semitic, then there will be no evidence against them and their lives/jobs will be just fine, no?
MissyB1 · 21/05/2021 10:30

OP can’t screenshot because I’m starting to downy this post ever existed.

MissyB1 · 21/05/2021 10:31

Doubt not downy!!

Charmtaste · 21/05/2021 10:31

@Cadent I have been waiting and hoping that they would respond to my comment and that he would disown his wife’s views publicly.

paralysedbyinertia · 21/05/2021 10:32

@Propagandalf, being Jewish is both a religion and an ethnicity. People who are ethnically Jewish cannot just opt out.

@Propagandalf my husband cannot stop being ethnically Jewish. It is not physically possible. It is his ethnicity. It is not a choice.

grantoderek you're coming across as a massive racist.

Charmtaste · 21/05/2021 10:40

@MissyB1 good for you. I will not be goaded into posting a screenshot that could end someone’s career without serious consideration. I asked about if I should go to a reunion not if I should post the screenshot.

OP posts:
ItWasLikeThatWhenIGotHere · 21/05/2021 10:43

If this did go further grantoderek it wouldn’t be on the basis of an anonymous MN comment, because no name has been given. It could only go further if a screenshot of the relevant Facebook page was produced circulated. And yes that’s a lot of consequences from a statement, but if people make and/or passively approve appalling statements then they should be prepared to take those consequences.

grantoderek · 21/05/2021 10:47

How is objecting to ridiculous behavior racist. The least racist thing to do is report it to Facebook and the police not try to cause a drama on the internet for attention.

Charmtaste · 21/05/2021 10:48

@ItWasLikeThatWhenIGotHere

100% agree. Well put.

OP posts:
FOJN · 21/05/2021 10:51

grantoderek you're coming across as a massive racist.

And there we have, the shut down.

I agree with grandtoderek, this is not a "horns of a dilemma" situation, I cannot understand the OP's angst and am sceptical about whether it's real or is exactly as described by the OP.

I would have no hesitation in taking a screen shot of the post, reporting it to the Labour Party and then being very direct with this couple about what I had done and why. The post is indisputably anti-semitic, if you are so appalled by it why is it so difficult to decide on the most appropriate course action to take. It's a no brainer for me so I'm left questioning the veracity of the OP's claim and her motives for posting here. That social media post isn't getting less anti-semitic the longer it remains.

Charmtaste · 21/05/2021 10:51

@grantoderek your responses are bizarre. You obviously don’t agree with people discussing things on an anonymous forum, so maybe stop reading?

OP posts:
Charmtaste · 21/05/2021 10:52

@FOJN my “angst” is about attending a reunion or not. Please read the OP.
