To ask of you have curtains in your bedrooms?

When we moved into our new build house 3 years ago we had vertical blinds fitted to all the windows. I had planned to get curtains in all of the bedrooms eventually but DH thinks this is unnecessary and that curtains aren’t ‘modern’.
We have a 5 year old DS who wakes early each morning and I think the light is contributing so am keen to get curtain rails up and curtains bought but DH is insistent that ‘no-one’ has curtains as is driving me up the walls by refusing to accept that the light might be making the early mornings worse!

Yes, curtains and also blackout roman blinds.

Verticals blinds are for offices and would be really old fashioned in a residential setting if you would like to let your DH know...

Bouncebacker · 09/05/2021 19:31

We have some curtains, some blinds - but both in the kids rooms!

SeasonFinale · 09/05/2021 19:31

Perhaps you meant venetian blinds?

GhostCurry · 09/05/2021 19:31

Of course it is affecting your son’s sleep. Your DH is wrong. Just order some.

MeanderingGently · 09/05/2021 19:31

Well, I think curtains aren't very modern these days but I have them....real old-fashioned, double drape ones with gold silk tie-backs. They're for show though, I tend not to close them....

When I had small children I most definitely had blackout curtains, it really does make a difference to their early morning waking (and summer time sleeping).

Astronaut8 · 09/05/2021 19:32

I only have them in DS for the light

andivfmakes3 · 09/05/2021 19:32

I hate vertical blinds - like sleeping in an office

They are cold looking , don't block the light and just aren't cosy at all

Tiktokersmiracle · 09/05/2021 19:32

I have curtains, they are the most over the top, kitsch looking curtains ever but they block all the light out.
I don't think blinds keep the warmth in during winter. Nothing gets through these curtains.

PurpleFlower1983 · 09/05/2021 19:33

YANBU, vertical blinds are awful outside of offices!

Hadalifeonce · 09/05/2021 19:33

Blackout blinds and lined curtains in all bedrooms. Blackout blinds put in as soon as DC were born.

Staffroomdoughnut · 09/05/2021 19:33

Everyone I know has curtains in bedrooms. YANBU

Fauvist · 09/05/2021 19:33

I have curtains and blackout blinds in all the bedrooms. I don't always use the blackout blinds now I don't have tiny babies/toddlers but they are actually quite useful sometimes.

The combination of blinds plus curtains is also really warm in the winter.

Vertical blinds are horrid and not at all modern. They are ideal for a 1970s office.

We actually had a similar discussion when we moved into our house as DH wanted blinds and I wanted curtains too and he said the same. In the end we got curtains as I just felt the windows looked a bit naked without them and DH acknowledged that light coming in around the sides of the blinds wasn’t helping out sleep. I also find that in summer sometimes it’s nicer to sleep with the blinds open so that air can get through an open window but I wouldn’t want to do that without curtains.

xyzandabc · 09/05/2021 19:34

I don't think I know anyone that doesn't have curtains in their bedroom, so E have both blinds and curtains, but they are roller blinds rather than vertical blinds.

To me, vertical blinds belong in an office, perhaps a conservatory? Not a bedroom though, they're just a bit 'clinical' for lack of a better word.

fairgame84 · 09/05/2021 19:34

Yes i have curtains and blinds in living room and bedrooms. I would never sleep with just a blind, I need it to be pitch black.

minniemomo · 09/05/2021 19:35

Curtains in the bedrooms and living room, blinds in the kitchen and study

MadMadMadamMim · 09/05/2021 19:35

I'm assuming DH gets up with DS every single morning, no exceptions - and therefore doesn't mind that the sun is rising earlier and earlier?

We have curtains, btw - but I'd be very pissed off with DH telling me what I could and couldn't have.

TillyTopper · 09/05/2021 19:36

None of our rooms have curtains. In the recess we have blinds then in the bedroom we have roman blinds which block out the light entirely. Personally I wouldn't want only the horizontal blinds as they don't cut out the light entirely.

Ellpellwood · 09/05/2021 19:36

I'd always have curtains first! It's the only bit of decor in a bedroom except the bedding.

We have blinds in the kitchen and a roller blind in the hallway.

RestUp · 09/05/2021 19:36

Black out blinds and curtains or black out curtains.

Aquamarine1029 · 09/05/2021 19:37

Your husband has absolutely no idea what he's talking about, and sorry, but vertical blinds are awful. Get rid of them and just have blackout curtains with grommets on rods. Very simple, easy to manage, and easy to clean.

Notonthestairs · 09/05/2021 19:37

Blackout blinds and lined curtains - warmth in t e winter and helps keeps them from over heating in the summer.

Just order them. Watch a few Youtube putting curtain poles up.

Why anyone would risk their children getting up earlier I'll never know.

Slimmingstar · 09/05/2021 19:38

I have just windows.
I love the light in the morning - doesn’t wake me early, but I wake feeling refreshed. Waking in a dark room always leaves me groggy.

waitingpatientlyforspring · 09/05/2021 19:38

Curtains on double window and black out blond on single window in two rooms. Ds has two double windows his room so two sets of curtains.

I didn't realise they were old fashioned 😂

AnUnoriginalUsername · 09/05/2021 19:39

Curtains everywhere except the kitchen and bathroom. Blinds don't block much light at all, I couldn't sleep in a room without curtains.
