When we moved into our new build house 3 years ago we had vertical blinds fitted to all the windows. I had planned to get curtains in all of the bedrooms eventually but DH thinks this is unnecessary and that curtains aren’t ‘modern’.
We have a 5 year old DS who wakes early each morning and I think the light is contributing so am keen to get curtain rails up and curtains bought but DH is insistent that ‘no-one’ has curtains as is driving me up the walls by refusing to accept that the light might be making the early mornings worse!

YABU for having vertical blinds. If they must be used only in commercial properties. First thing I removed from my flat that had them

crapbuttrue · 09/05/2021 20:54

BUT I do have pleated blinds. Just can't stand vertical.

flashylamp · 09/05/2021 20:54

We have curtains but no blinds

Aquagirl19 · 09/05/2021 21:00

We have curtains to 'frame' the window but we never close them and just pull down the blind.

DappledThings · 09/05/2021 21:01

I only have blinds in the study. I couldn't not have curtains in the lounge or any bedrooms, far too clinical to have blinds in any room that is designed for relaxing.

FastFood · 09/05/2021 21:04

No curtains, just venetian blinds which let as much light in as possible, I hate sleeping in the dark.

PollyRoe16 · 09/05/2021 21:04

No curtains but we have double blinds. Perfect fit black out blinds which are fitted to the actual window and then wooden slated blinds. Definitely helps keep our little ones room dark

Neonprint · 09/05/2021 21:10

Sorry op vertical blinds are awful. It's like being in a 70s office, very clinical. So your husband is a bit rich complaining curtains are old fashioned!

Also I'm assuming people with no curtains or who don't close them don't live in the city? I'd be flashing me neighbours if I didn't have curtains. I live in a 140 year old house too. So unfortunately the windows are draughty.

winniesanderson · 09/05/2021 21:12

Curtains and light wooden Venetian blinds on most windows here. We don't always draw them, especially downstairs. We used to have similar blinds to yours and no curtains but I just feel they soften the room a bit. Tend to go for plain fabrics rather than patterned and I don't think they're too old fashioned.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 09/05/2021 21:14

Perhaps he is correct,
DH thinks this is unnecessary and that curtains aren’t ‘modern’.

We have three big switches, by the window, one to turn the moon off, another to switch the lamp post off across the road and a dimmer switch to adjust the morning dawn (it also works in reverse if we want an early in the summer months Wink)

notacooldad · 09/05/2021 21:17

I don't have curtains anywhere in the house.
Clearly there's no love for vertical blinds here but I like a clinical minimal look. The light doesn't bother me. Id be happy with no blinds but still have a need for privacy!!
I did think of changing the blinds but I'm leaving it for now.
All the houses on my estate have either verticals or wide slat venetians.

QueenOfPain · 09/05/2021 21:21

In contrast to your DP’s assertion, I’d say that vertical blinds really aren’t modern and they remind me of old people with conservatories who go on cruises.

user1471538283 · 09/05/2021 21:21

I sleep much better when it's completely dark. Currently as we rent we just have blinds but I cant wait to buy so i can have blackout blinds and curtains again.

I think small children sleep better with curtains so it's dark.

daisypond · 09/05/2021 21:27

I have never seen vertical blinds in a house ever. Even in an office they would be old fashioned.

Daisy829 · 09/05/2021 21:29

We just had blinds until a week ago when we got curtains too. The difference is amazing! Definitely helps keep the light out. The only problem is it’s harder to get up in the morning.

FastFood · 09/05/2021 21:30

I quite like vertical blinds in a modern minimalist flat or house. Obviously not in a period property.

Buby51 · 09/05/2021 21:30

Yes we do and we also have blinds. The curtains often just stay open as we use the blinds but if it's particularly sunny in the evenings shut the curtains so dc can get off to sleep and not wake up too early if the sun is shining in (blinds aren't blackout). Imo they are certainly not old fashioned. You can get some lovely sets! Dunelm is my fave for curtains.

RosesAndHellebores · 09/05/2021 21:37

Thank goodness my DH is fully aware that soft furnishings have nothing to do with him.

Shutters can work well.

OohThatCat · 09/05/2021 21:40

Was have blackout blinds only everywhere in the house. No curtains.

RainingZen · 09/05/2021 21:41

Blackout blind in DD's room, blackout curtains in DS room, gorgeous blinds in our room (not blackout but almost as good).

I don't think it matters but I wouldn't want vertical blinds anywhere in my home. They are useless when the windows are open and look like an office.

BigDaddio · 09/05/2021 21:42

The previous owners left vertical "dentists blinds" in most rooms - I hate them and would prefer nets by dw doesn't mind them - and we have also got normal curtains in all rooms. Still get some light shining through in the morning.

murbblurb · 09/05/2021 21:43

When I bought this house there were silly flimsy curtains in the bedrooms and downstairs had curtain poles. Bedrooms now have blackout blinds with lined thick curtains - keeps light out and heat in. It will be light before 5:30am tomorrow. Sleep needs darkness.

Haven't been able to replace the curtain poles as they appear to be cemented in, but have added curtain liners to alleviate some of the heat loss in winter.

AnonGlitterBomb · 09/05/2021 21:44

Your husband hasn’t got a bloody clue 😂

PlanDeRaccordement · 09/05/2021 21:44

Yes I have curtains but sleep with them open. I find I am less tired if the morning light wakes me up instead of an alarm in an artificially darkened room.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 09/05/2021 21:45

Blinds look cold, let all the light in and let all the heat escape.

We have vertical blinds in some of our windows but there are curtains on all of them. They're plain thermal blackout ones that are lightweight and thin but let hardly any light or heat through.
