To ask of you have curtains in your bedrooms?

When we moved into our new build house 3 years ago we had vertical blinds fitted to all the windows. I had planned to get curtains in all of the bedrooms eventually but DH thinks this is unnecessary and that curtains aren’t ‘modern’.
We have a 5 year old DS who wakes early each morning and I think the light is contributing so am keen to get curtain rails up and curtains bought but DH is insistent that ‘no-one’ has curtains as is driving me up the walls by refusing to accept that the light might be making the early mornings worse!

None of us do. Just blinds.

Glitterblue · 09/05/2021 19:58

Everyone I know has curtains

pearpickingporky84 · 09/05/2021 19:58

DH has fucked up drilling holes in the wall
multiple times in the past so I can see why he’s avoiding that part, it’s the rest that is completely irrational! I’m pretty sure I did at least some of the curtain rails in the last house so could have a go myself I suppose.

I’ve attached a pic of the offending blinds, apologies if it’s not clear thanks to the amount of fecking light getting through..../

I have blinds in all the bedrooms. They are blackout blinds and so keep 99% of the light out (it chinks in around the edges).

upincloud9 · 09/05/2021 19:59

Yeah curtains in all rooms herw

pearpickingporky84 · 09/05/2021 19:59

Oh and it was DH who choose/insisted on the blinds....

We have curtains and blackout blinds in the bedrooms. We seem to be a family of budgies- need a cloth over our cage as we can only sleep in complete darkness.

Vertical blinds are fucking horrible- had some in a previous rental and they did sod all to block out light and were ugly and seemed to break very easily.

BowserJr · 09/05/2021 20:01

We had similar OP, new build house and just blinds. We now have curtains in every room except the kitchen and bathroom. The house just looked so bare and soulless without them (probably slight exaggeration). Didn't help our entire downstairs is painted white. Now our living room looks like a living room rather than somewhere an 80's serial killer lives.

I will warn you thought, our walls are a bit crap and putting the rails up was a nightmare.

Twickerhun · 09/05/2021 20:01

Well I know I haven’t got out much this last year and a bit but I’m gonna say that’s not an up to date interior design look. And curtains might be slightly more timeless or on trend.

Anoisagusaris · 09/05/2021 20:01

He actually chose vertical blinds? Vertical blinds are awful, they look cold and dated even in offices.

I do like wooden Venetian blinds though.

RainyDay2020 · 09/05/2021 20:03

We’ve got Linda, the type with horizontal slats and I bloody hate them. They’re rubbish at letting too much light in. I want to put up rails and blackout curtains but my ‘D’H is very resistant to it for same reasons as yours I think.
I’m the one that gets woken at stupid-o-clock but the kids or cat in the summer months when it’s light though!

Scrumptiousbears · 09/05/2021 20:03

We work night and have Venetian blinds and blackout curtains. Blinds look good from the outside but aren't as dark as I'd like during the day.

RainyDay2020 · 09/05/2021 20:04

We’ve got BLINDS - not Linda for fucks sake autocorrect!!

AnneLovesGilbert · 09/05/2021 20:06

We’ve got perfect fit black out blinds with blackout curtains on top.

pearpickingporky84 · 09/05/2021 20:07

@RainyDay2020 let’s rebel together abs get some curtains up! And tell Linda to go home...

Oh gosh. They're even worse than I thought. Literally dental surgery / office boring functional blinds.

But I can sympathise with his fear of putting up curtain rails. I have done it bit it can be a right pain getting the holes drilled sometimes.

SunshineSuxx · 09/05/2021 20:08

We sell quite a few vertical blinds at work, but they're weighted ones that don't have the bottom chain, and come in gorgeous fabrics. So not all verticals are the office type.

Having said that, we've got blackout Luxaflex Duette blinds at every single window in the house but still have curtains too apart from the spare room. It's too stark a look for me without any wedding dressing - a fair pairs are just dress curtains.

MiddlesexGirl · 09/05/2021 20:08

*but

MintyMabel · 09/05/2021 20:09

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have curtains. Looking at all the houses around me, they have curtains.

When light is streaming in at 4am and the 5 year old is awake, let him deal with the subsequent bedtime melt downs.

ShinyMe · 09/05/2021 20:10

It would never occur to me to have blinds instead of curtains in my bedroom. Blinds look like an office imo, and curtains keep out draughts and help a room feel more cosy in winter.

My bedroom curtains are ancient, they were my granny's living room curtains from the 50s, and appear in loads of old family photos from the last few decades. I've had them up maybe 10 years now and I love them, they're thick and heavy and have a sort of woodland leafy pattern with rabbits and birds.

MiniTheMinx · 09/05/2021 20:11

Plain cream roller blinds and curtains. Huge interlined extra long heavy curtains, with poncy tie backs. Mostly vintage, some faded, but I love the feeling of warmth and opulence that is easily achieved with soft furnishings.

I think vertical blinds look a bit naff and assumed people have them when they lack creativity or imagination. Its all too 70s semi. I always imagine the people to be boringGrin Tell your DH he can do all the early mornings.

negomi90 · 09/05/2021 20:12

I'm currently in the process of changing my blinds (came with the flat) for curtains. The blinds let in too much light around the side and its affecting my sleep, so I'm going for blackout curtains.

LateToTheParty · 09/05/2021 20:13

YANBU - we have a new build and we installed a voile, a blackout roller blind and curtains in every bedroom window! Might seem like overkill but works for us (DH shift worker who needs to be able to sleep during daylight and DCs with additional needs who need darkness to remain in their rooms/ get to sleep). I couldn't tell you, or care less, what our neighbours have at their windows, and would happily sacrifice "fashion" over everyone getting enough rest any day of the week.

JackieTheFart · 09/05/2021 20:13

I dislike vertical blinds but they’re very popular in student accommodation!

We have curtains - long ones from Ikea. They’re flipping great.

I really hate having to draw curtains on those grommet curtains.

notalwaysalondoner · 09/05/2021 20:14

Vertical blinds are horrible, cheap looking and ineffective! As are Venetian blinds. Fitted shutters are nice but I’d still have curtains too.

We have thick curtains in some rooms and Roman blinds in others (live in cottage with small windows so curtains not practical for all). Even on top of the Roman blinds we have thin curtains where feasible as they look nice. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have curtains. The thicker and longer the more expensive they make the room look - my parents have short ones that stop just below the windowsill rather than at the floor and I don’t like those, definitely prefer ones going down to the floor.
