To ask of you have curtains in your bedrooms?

When we moved into our new build house 3 years ago we had vertical blinds fitted to all the windows. I had planned to get curtains in all of the bedrooms eventually but DH thinks this is unnecessary and that curtains aren’t ‘modern’.
We have a 5 year old DS who wakes early each morning and I think the light is contributing so am keen to get curtain rails up and curtains bought but DH is insistent that ‘no-one’ has curtains as is driving me up the walls by refusing to accept that the light might be making the early mornings worse!

Curtains in all bedrooms and blinds too in some (to keep sun out in south facing rooms)

StoneofDestiny · 09/05/2021 23:02

I had no idea that curtains were considered so old fashioned. I'm not getting rid of mine. They keep the house warm in winter

They are not. .

I have vertical blinds in my office at work. There is no way I would have them in my home. My DC had blackout blinds and blackout lined curtains. Just crack on and get them done.

Zancah · 09/05/2021 23:07

Curtains aren't old fashioned, there are loads of contemporary designs! Unless you're talking about pelmets and drapes (which will probably come back "in" at some point, ugly fashions always do!)
I hate to think how much heat flies straight through those blinds, though. Might as well light a £20 on fire in front of his face!

I have curtains. I would be awake at 4 am in the dummer if i didn’t. I have the sun rising and it shines through. Bought these for my DS and for the price I didn’t expect much but i cant see a bloody thing when they are shut.

I have blinds and so do both of my children. The light has never overly affected them.

However there’s absolutely nothing wrong with having curtains if you prefer. Your dh is being very unreasonable. It’s likely it will make a different to your dcs sleep. Is your DH by any chance not the one who has to get up with him?

UhtredRagnarson · 09/05/2021 23:34

Blinds are underwear, curtains are clothes. Your windows are parading about in their undies! Get them dressed!!

lydia2021 · 09/05/2021 23:39

I hated my North facing bedroom. So now in box room. No windows. Warm and cosy. Bedroom is junk room now.

notacooldad · 10/05/2021 06:35

Blimey, there's some strong opinions about blinds V curtains. Who knew they could be controversial!
😂😂

We don’t have curtains as we live in the country, so nobody can see into our windows when it’s dark outside. However, we do have electric shutters (a very Euro thing, I think, but absolutely brilliant) that we close at the end of the day. They definitely block out the light and are quite smart as they are invisible when not in use. Also very effective at keeping the place cool in the height of summer. However, they are quite expensive to install, which may be off-putting.

When our children were little and we were living in an older place, we put up blackout blinds that we bought from Amazon. Very easy to install and effective if you aren’t keen on the look of curtains!

My children have curtains in the bedrooms. My bedroom has shutters.

A bed tent?! I can see it now.
Mum, the sun's in my eyes.
Into your bed tent, son. You'll have to take your homework in there with you. Don't forget your pencils.

CompleteBarstool · 10/05/2021 12:06

Curtains and black-out roller blinds in all our bedrooms.

TheWernethWife · 10/05/2021 12:12

Not read all the replies but don't you have neighbours. You can see if they have curtains up at their windows or not by just going outside.

motherloaded · 10/05/2021 12:25

Every bedroom in my house has blackout blinds and curtains. People can chose how dark they want the bedroom to be.

I haven't seen many bedroom without curtains.

The lack of shutters in this country really annoys me!

Thatisnotwhatisaid · 10/05/2021 12:29

Yes we have black out curtains in all of the bedrooms, blinds downstairs.

tbtf · 10/05/2021 12:51

If you struggle drilling into the wall (crumbly walls like we do!) we watched a few YouTube videos of handymen recommending adding a piece of wood along the lintel, fixing to the wall with adhesive, nails, or plugs and screws and then attaching the curtain pole to that. It worked really well and DH will always use that method going forwards.

Rhythmisadancer · 10/05/2021 12:53

vertical blinds = strong dentist's waiting room vibe

bananaboats · 10/05/2021 12:56

Everyone I know has curtains so not sure where he's getting that from! Only rooms I don't have curtains in are kitchen and bathroom where we just have roller blinds. Personally think bedrooms and living rooms look very unfinished without curtains.

We have curtains, never even thought about if they were modern or not.
Blackout blind and curtains in the kids rooms though.

My house is the same. I agree that windows look cold and undressed without curtains- kitchens and bathrooms excepted.
Peace43 · 11/05/2021 07:27

I have blackout roller blinds but no curtains. I have a strange sloping ceiling and deeply inset windows and curtains / curtain pole would be hard to fit and ruin the lines.. always had bedroom curtains in the part though.
