When we moved into our new build house 3 years ago we had vertical blinds fitted to all the windows. I had planned to get curtains in all of the bedrooms eventually but DH thinks this is unnecessary and that curtains aren’t ‘modern’.
We have a 5 year old DS who wakes early each morning and I think the light is contributing so am keen to get curtain rails up and curtains bought but DH is insistent that ‘no-one’ has curtains as is driving me up the walls by refusing to accept that the light might be making the early mornings worse!

Curtains and a blackout blind in every bedroom.

Rina66 · 11/05/2021 07:38

Black out blinds, Roman blinds and curtains here, all on 3 on bedroom windows! Only actually close the black out blinds at night though, the rest is just to dress the windows. Our DD's love coming to stay as they sleep really well with the black out blinds, they have very modern houses with no curtains and wake as soon as it gets light.

Blackout blinds and curtains. Less would be hell on earth and I would be completely deranged from lack of sleep.

Blinds and curtains in grandchild’s bedroom.

We have those vertical chained blinds in our office at work. I hate them as they don't keep out the light if I need the room dark and the chain bits at the bottom break. Opening windows with them is also hard, but that.s largely our old stiff large windows.
I love curtains but our bedroom just has blackout roller blinds as it's a narrow picture window that would be difficult to fit a curtain rail on and I hate curtains that hide half the window when open. The light comes in the side of the blinds a bit though and the room isn't as warm as it would be with curtains.
Putting a curtain rail up properly can be a difficult job though and you need to choose the correct sort of curtain rail for the window, ceiling and walls so it doesn't fall down or stop the windows opening.

I have wooden Venetian blinds in all the rooms because I really don’t like curtains. My children have left home though and we had curtains when they were little. Blinds don’t block all the light. Do you mean those horrible vertical ones like you get at the dentist?

longwayoff · 11/05/2021 07:44

Although I'd rather have no window covering than have vertical blinds. They are not good OP, awful things. Change them.

So you don't like them. Other people do.
🤷‍♀️

I have curtains, and roller blinds (from the previous owners that I haven’t bothered to take down) in the bedrooms and roman blinds that I adore in the kitchen, bathroom and hallway. Voile in the sitting room.

btchymcbtchfce · 11/05/2021 07:51

No, neither. I don't mind if the sheep want to look in the windows.

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 11/05/2021 07:51

If curtains are old fashioned why do so many people buy them? Sounds like the sort of thing my brother in law says.Hmm
In our previous house we had blackout blinds in all the bedrooms as well as curtains. It was impossible to fit the blinds without light 'leaking' at the sides.
In this house we only have curtains and I think we will resort to blinds in the end.

anxietyanonymous · 11/05/2021 08:02

I prefer Roman blinds but thats really personal taste.

Verticals do remind me of offices.

Curtains-there is huge choice! Including modern options. So no his blanket statement is odd.

Why does he need to approve it? Just buy
Some and put them up. If you can't manage the pole get a local handyman to come put it up. Or go with a company whom will make and install.

Minezatea · 11/05/2021 08:08

We have a blackout roman blind. I would not want vertical blinds as I think they are a bit officey but I guess your place is perhaps ultra modern? They also just filter light rather than keep it out.

Woodlandbelle · 11/05/2021 08:10

We have blackout blinds and blackout curtains in dcs room.
You dh is being ridiculous. Quality sleep is essential for young children.
Ours do not sleep properly without both blinds and curtains (blackout)

RaspberryCoulis · 11/05/2021 08:21

I'd say if anything wasn't modern it was vertical blinds!

We are in a loft room and have blackout blinds on Velux windows. In the kids' rooms, two have roller blinds, one has a roller blind and curtains too.

AlwaysLatte · 11/05/2021 08:25

We have curtains, no blinds at all in our house. Blackout linings so that it's lovely and dark early on light summer mornings. Most of our curtains are tab top ones, heavy and quite plain though, no chintzy stuff. I don't think they look old fashioned.

AlwaysLatte · 11/05/2021 08:27

Nb my mum has white wooden blinds everywhere and I do think they have an 'office-y' feel to them.

greenlynx · 11/05/2021 08:29

We have blackout curtains in both bedrooms. Most houses around have curtains. Ours are really good, you can basically have nighttime in the middle of a sunny day.

UpTheJunktion · 11/05/2021 09:02

Hmmmm.

I don’t think curtains in poles keep enough light out as they stuck out from the wall and light comes through the edges.

I have black out roller blinds from IKEA and curtains.

999Alex · 11/05/2021 10:35

I have blackout curtains and blackout blinds. In all bedrooms. Even then there still seems to be a little light come in from gaps.
